OK, but I reckon damalfi had the right of it: 33.Rh6ch at once was decisive after 33...Kg8 (forced) 34.Rf1! This rook manoeuvre protects the back rank and threatens a quick mate: 34...Re8 35.Rg1ch Kf8 36.Rh8ch Ke7 37.Rh7 bxa2 (say) 38.Rxf7ch Kxf7 39.Qg6ch Ke7 40.Qe6ch Kd8 41.Qxd6ch Kc8 42.Qc6ch ... I think you can see where this is going...

...and 37... Rxa2, despite pinning the white's dsb, doesn't help, either. Or, after 39... Ke7, 40. Qg7+, Kd8 (forced), 41. QxRa7. Now, if Re2+, Kh1!, and if b3, Ba5+ and mate the next one.

...with the wrong rook? Maybe 36... Rg8+ is more interesting. But the truth is white has to play carefully, here, since the king march toward the e column is not a strategy, is the only way to avoid dangers. For instance, after the Rg8+, 37. Kf1 is the only reasonable move, since 37. Kh2, Bg3+, and if 38. RxB, RxB+, and if 38. Kh1, Ra1+, 39. Kg2, Bxf4+ (discovered), and in both variants white just loses a rook! And after 37. Kf1, Ra1+, 38. Ke2, Rg2+, 39. Kf3, Rg3+, and white king must go to e4, otherwise black will repeat checks.

Or as I would say: towards the middle.

There's a bit more to it than a spite check: it does bring this rook into action. But it's true Black has a steep mountain to climb, and it's getting steeper.

What does the 133 after BCF mean? BCF obviously stands for British Chess Federation. Thanks. Is that quite high? and what is your rating?

Many thanks anyone who read it and/or made comments. It seems I was a bit lucky and frequently played second-best moves! 133 was her rating, in Britain we have our own rating system! I estimate that my BFC rating this season will be 157. They are published once a year.
