The thing with this game was that White played solid, conservative positional chess - strangulating chess. The pawn break f4 had to come, and when it did it exposed all kinds of dissonances - disharmonies - in Black's game. Those disharmoonies were induced by White's snuffing out all reasonable counterplay. This was the style of one-time World Champion Tigran Petrosian - the master of behind-the-lines manoeuvring and sucking the life out of his opponent's game.

Now that is a sight you don't often see: overlooking an immediate (re)capture, giving up a pawn, and permitting a fork into the bargain! One suspects this might have been a 'change-of-reality' moment: hallucinating, seeing ghosts. It's a bummer when that happens.

well a blunder is just called some kind of difference in evaluation. When you miss a quicker mate it's already quickly a blunder. That's just a technical term. The programmers didn't learn the computer to make a difference here. A blunder is a certain difference in evaluation points, no matter whether another # will arrive soon. There is nothing wrong with the computer here, only with the interpretation of the labels the programmers gave to certain differences in evaluations. It's just not important enough9for programmers) to focus on this issue .... since mate will follow soon !

In fact 30. Qxf6 leads to 30...Bh3 31. Rf1 Rfe8 32. Rf4 Rxe4 33. Rxe4 a6 34. Rh4 Bc8 35. Qh8#. Black cannot prolong it any longer. So the computer analysis is clearly wrong.

Qxf6; he finds mate in 5 with Nf5 Bxf5 ; exf5 Rfxe8; Bxe8 c4 (or another move not being Rxc8); Re4 .... whatever for black ; Rg4# (one possibility there are more) the played move had taken one move extra with the right counterplay: Qxf6 Re8 ; Rf1 Re7; Rf4 Rxe4; Rxe4 Bf5; Nxf5 whatever move for black ; Qg7# (also here alot more possibilities) The difference is just this one move. The played defense was not the best to postpone # as long as possible: Ba7 just was a helpful hand to "defeat" the computer sequence :lol @jkarp .... a nice challenge to defeat the engines and show this was the quickest mate even when black played better !

Very impressive play! If you had played the opening like that against even 1800 players, I think you would have caused a major upset!

yes, i agree you played well (maybe my comments don't always show this .... but you don't learn much from sweeties !), although you made it yourself quite difficult to get into a position where you could not escape from ! Certainly a game to learn a lot from. How chess is a game about space and mobility and how these factors determine the result ! That you should avoid wasting time (easily said .... but that's a lesson i wanna take from here !) and that you should always know what advantage you'll get from a move. This game was indeed interesting, but I see it as an impressive example of controlled play by White. He always had the initiative, undertook no decisive manoeuvres until the time was ripe, but established early on a bind on Black's game that become progressively more difficult to break. The f3-f4 break was enough to induce the first crack in the dyke, whereat the floodgates opened. The final collapse was the more dramatic for the slow but steady earlier build-up of pressure upon Black's game.
