Kicking the queen to stunt white's attack. But I think black should just have taken the pawn on c2 instead.

Unmasking a battery: attacking Queen and c3-bishop at once. But 13.Qd2 is the obvious defence, though Black might well respond with ...Bg4 and possibly ...Bxf3. The other defence, 13.Qh4 is probably insufficient after 13...Bxc3 14.Bxe7 Qd7 15.Bxf8 Bxa1.

Blunder. Qc2 was essential to protect the knight and pawn.

The Queen needed to retreat one square further.

It does no such thing unfortunately. It just wins a piece.

I think that best was Nxc2, which forks the queen and rook.

Judgement call. 13...Nxc2 won the exchange and a pawn; 13...bxc3 won a minor piece. Roughl;y equivalent. Marginally, I prefer taking the piece as that takes from White one of his more active units; and ensures black keeps his own more active units. Furthermore, it forces White to lose a little time.

This is not so good as White could now have recovered some of his lost material.

Instead, 15.Qc1 seems to be the right move, picking up the knight or the bishop.

A piece and pawn to the good, black has no need to be embarrassed by running away with his spoils.

Had the WQ stood at c1, she could now snap up the c3-bishop. Now Black makes his getaway with his loot: knight and pawn.

What else? This is the correct move. White has no attack here.

Doesn't this allow liquidation?

White is probably hoping for 17...Bxh6 18.Qxh6 ... 19.Ng5 with some sort of attack. Black would be well advised to keep his wits about him, as it is very easy to underestimate this sort of thing.

A bit of to-ing and fro-ing, but at least this puts the knight on a better square. It's to be commended for that.

Nothing wrong with this knight move.

Black needs to stop messing here. Look at the bishop and rook, still at home on a8 and c8. They need to come into the game. Black is a piece up, but that's not good if that piece is sitting at home doing nothing.

This is a sure sign that Black has lost the plot. He's not losing - not even in all that much danger. But it is clear he doesn't quite know - or can't decide - how he wants to proceed. There is a wide range of possibilities. One idea is 18...e6, threatening 19...d4 and a breakout in the centre. The lines are fairly complicated but don't look good for White.

Not a sacrifice. This isn't needed though; just develop pieces! e6 threatens to swap off queens, and prepares d5, trapping the bishop and opening the position up. That's what black needs - get pieces out, swap them off and open the position.

Black probably ought to have waited. 19...e6 was still quite good. Now Black will have to take care...

A monumental blunder! Curious that after all black's faffing about with Nf6->h5->f6->h5, that he misses the saving move - Nf6!

Yep: disaster - a product of indecision and to-ing and fro-ing with this knight. Black could not abide moving it back to f6, where the knight absolutely had to go, now or a move later.

This attack has been on the cards since White's 16th move. Had Black been a bit more familiar with this mating pattern, he would have been able to take counter-measures before the situation got out of hand. But that's how you become familiar with the pattern: be on the receiving end at least once.
