Actually, moves like this are OK (if you don't believe me, run this on a chess engine and turn the book off), and sometimes moving the f-pawn is bad, but usually it is OK.

1...e5 is the violent From Gambit, which is considered more risky than the main line 1...d5.

Not so. White has control over the e5 square and black the e4 square. The f4 pawn here has central influence since it attacks the e5 square. This is a playable position for either side. White is ahead in development 1-0 since pawns don't count as development. Then why do we move pawns? Because if we don't, then our opponent can drive our pieces out of the center with his pawns.

No. You win only a pawn. If 3...dxe4, then 4.h3 saves the piece.

4. h3 instead would have restricted the material loss to just a pawn I think. Though white's king would be rather drafty!

This makes no sense. The rook has no future on h4 blocked in by its own pawns. Maybe Rh5 was intended, at least attacking the b5 pawn. More more logical would have been d3, releasing the bishop. Or maybe white could even get away with castling.

White's not really paying attention.

No...he wasn't paying attention. Not to the whole board. He had tunnel vision, but he still was not paying attention to the rest of the board. cdeburca is right.

As of right now, it's his only piece near the King. The Queen is trapped behind pawns, adn the Rook is passive (until he Castles), so I'd say the Knight is a pretty important asset.
