I'm not a good player, but your d pawn is the best placed free pawn on the board. It will take a lot of effort to black to take it (how will he get his K+R threatening it?). So I'm not sure I'd agree with this assessement. Rc5 (threatening f4, Ke6, Re5+, Kf6, Rc5 again whorts a look, maybe).

Putting the pressure on the d-pawn and committing White to its defence. Sure, Black isn't intending an immediate ...Rxd4...

This I think is a misjudgement. Instead 32...Ke7 33.Ke3 Kd6 with 34...Rc7 in mind, seems to me the way to go.

That's right, Joe: that's the ultimate aim. A majority always has the potential for a passed pawn to be brought about in this way. In this instance, Black's e-pawn, not yet passed, is the 'candidate' to become one.

Good move. The e-pawn is immobile so may be attacked. Pawn exchanges are very desirable for White.

Now the Black f-pawn becomes the candidate - a slightly less promising one, being less advanced than was the e-pawn.

This might need to be looked into further. Could 39.h3 have been a better choice? Maybe not...

It seems weak to me, since now black will have two separated pawns instead of three joined ones.

I don't think that (the exchange and separation of Black's K-side pawns) could have been prevented, except by 39...g4ch. That would have left the 'candidate' pawn backward, and not no easy to mobilize. Black's choice makes sense to me.

Already this looks like a draw.
