gxh5 would've lost the game though. 28...gxh5 29. gxh5 Bxh3 30. Rxh3 Qd1+ 31. Qc1 Rad8! 32. Qxd1 Rxd1+ And black has complete control of the position (though another line after 29...Bxh3 30. Rg1+ Kf8 leads to a similar outcome).

I just played counting on his fear of some trick. Something I can't do OTB... and which I don't recommend!  

Oh, "falling into his game"? Never. He would have "solved" the e4 pawn's weakness, open useful lines for his R... My objective here is h7, or Rg1+, and go that way. My tempoes are very precious, I must use them for the best, not for a simple exchange of unimportant pawns...

I'm sure, Joe, that more skilled players will find "enormous holes" in the whole way I (white) conducted the game, ASIDE of the ones I can recognize and I have pointed out in the annotation. Here, I was not at all sure about gxR would have given me a victory, so I seized the opportunity to withdraw from that dangerous offer. He sould have accepted it. Now it's too late (he he he...) the R is safe again.

NO! I don't want to defend, I have to attack! Chess is a game where you go after your opponent. I have committed my whole game to the attack on the h colum, and I won't allow black to distract me from that purpose much longer (or he will, as you'll see!) -- teardrop: 30. g5, QxR, 31. BxB+, RxB, 32. RxQ, and white is well!   as if fxg5, 31. Qxc4, Ra-e8, 32. Rxe4... Am I missing something?

You might wanna have another look at g5. Will leave that as an exercise for you   EDIT: You pretty much got it. Now just to apply it practically  

This was the reason I saved the game: to remember I didn't, and it sure looks not natural. In fact, white was just trying to find the tempo do to it from long ago.

Yet another misinterpretation. Qxg5 wouldn't have been a blunder. In fact, it would leave Black in a winning position: 31...Qxg5 32. Bxe4 Bd5! 33. Bxd5 Qxd5 and again, Black has equalized the position.

Cam'on, Joe, 32. RxQ and the bargain is for white. -- teardrop, thank you for pointing out the black's B move I didn't see. In fact, after your line, 34. Qxf6, Rb7 and all white has is equal material (if Rxf2, Rxh7...)

teardrop, you're right, and here's the homework: 34. Bxg6, Rd1+, 35. RxR. If now hxB, 36. Rd8+, Rf8 (forced), 37. f7+ followed by Qh8#. If 35. QxRh5, the same applies: Rd8+, Rf8, 36. f7+, Bxf7 (forced), 37. BxB+, KxB (forced), 38. Qf3+ wins the Rf8 and black has no mate threat anymore. Still, after 34. Bxg6, black seems better advised to reply Bf5+, forcing 35. BxB, QxB+, 36. Ka1 and black seems to hold a while more.

After 36. Bxg6, Rd1+, 37. RxRd1, Qxd1+, 38. Ka2, hxB white is -3, and there is no clear way out from Qb3+.

Bxg6! You again have the opportunity but refuse to capitalize! In the line for 35. Bxg6 Rd1+ 36. Ka2! (better than Rxd1) Rxh1 37. Bxf7+ Kxf7 38. Rxh1 the position is better for white.

Ah, Black missed a major opportunity to equalize the position again, beginning with Rd2!? or Rd3

36 Rxh7 forces RxR or mate. 38. RxR is not check, but if KxR, 39. Qh3+, Kg8, 40. Qh6, c3+, 41. BxB+ and black's lost. If black doesn't take the Rh7, say 38... BxBe4, 39. Rg7+, (Kh7, 40. f7 and black must lose against Rg8++ and mate), and if Kc8, Qb4+ and Qe7#...) Thank you for the homework!
