40.Qg3(??) was a complete blunder in a game that was beginning to turn south against White. Instead, 40.g5! would have decoyed the bishop (again) from the long diagonal, and at least kept White in the battle. Now, 41...Bxb2 was probably the stronger continuation, but White is busted, regardless.

White landed himself one of those positions which is ostensibly 'winning' and yet demanding of a suitable plan to realise the win. The idea of a direct K-side attack fell short, and gave Black the chance to develop an active plan of his own. Thrown onto the defensive, White lost his way, drifted into a difficult game, and finally blundered into a forced mate.
