World View
This is the place for discussion of world issues. Me, personally, when I turn on the news, I don't give a fig for local or even national news unless it touches on Federal Government policies. It is SBS World News which tickles my fancy as, when it comes to a World News, only the most important stories make the cut, stories concerning plucky dogs, hard-done-by pensioners, even missing teenagers go by the wayside as these are irrelevant, isolated occurences of no great consequence. Might as well write a story every time a pawn is sacrificed or exchanged! I am a man who keeps his eye on the big picture and this is the place that I shall do my painting! Join in, all and sundry!

Just A Little Bit of History Repeating
Well I shall leave aside the notions of dictators and authoritarian rule and focus only on NATO, the West and the US' obsession with arming rebels. In Rhodesia the rebels were armed and assisted by Western powers, including the British blockading the Mozambique channel and what do we have now? JAFAC (Just Another Fragged African Country), Mugabe's Zimbabwe is a Hell compared to Rhodesia under white rule. The US armed rebels in Afghanistan and what was the result? The Taliban! Two toppled towers later and you think they would have cottoned-on. But no! NATO armed and assisted with air-power the Al-Queda supported rebels in Libya and now we have another Iran-in-Waiting. The violence in Syria is deplorable but it is not one-sided. Indeed it was the Al-Queda sponsored rebels that fired the first shots in that war. Here the Western powers fight Islamic extremists in Afghanistan and Iraq, yet push, the US especially, for arming the same terrorists in Syria! Arm rebels, end up with a rabble in government I say! The violence against the US embassy in Libya, the detainment of an Australian member of the International Criminal Court by the terrorist regime now in government in Libya is only the beginning. Arab Spring? Arab Autumn more like, Winter is Coming! And once again the Western powers will be made to pay for their persistent stupidity in supporting savages that should have been turned into smouldering corpses long ago!

HOLD ON THERE!!!
You said ''supporting savages that should have been turned into smouldering corpses long ago!''.

I assume you don't mean the fast majority of people in the region, like the Women and children? I really hope this club doesn't become a right-wing Foxnews Talking -point forum.

"Soylent Green"
One thing which irks me is the waste of food by Western society, particularly supermarket chains. Legislation protects us, mostly, from food we, as members of civilised society, should not be eating. But what happens to this food once it pasts expiry or fails QC? The rubbish tip! WASTE! Surely it could not be too hard to gather up all of this and reprocess it into some mass-produced, but safe to eat, bulk food? As a Biologist and Chemist I can say such a plan is in fact rather easy! Ideally you would separate your greens from the rest, in the hope of conserving vitamins and fibre but, in reality, a bulk processing facility operating in a fashion to ensure a hygienic product would destroy the fibre, vitamins and minerals contained in the foodstuffs. But this is fine, the energy and the protein remain. Fibre, vitamins and minerals can be added at the last, from cheap sources of fibre, and from vitamin and mineral supplements which have expired, but even if they have to be generated anew, then added, the amounts of these required is negligible compared to the great amount of energy and protein recycled by such a facility. These bulk food stuffs, though not necessarily tasty, and somewhat "Soylent Green" in nature, are a hell of a lot better than nothing and infinitely better than all that food going to waste. Once produced the foods can primarily go back to society as cheap sustenance and to various charities, thereafter distributed to "less fortunate" (read, less organised) countries to relieve starvation.
A sensible plan, no?

smouldering corpses
No I mean combatants. Those that would take up arms against their government then seek to hide amongst civilians rather than don a uniform and fight in a fashion as befitting the Geneva convention. Interesting: militia are not covered by the Geneva Convention. Rights for terrorists then? They have none! Heads on a pike, bodies clad in pig-skins and left to rot. That'd be preferable to handing the cowards and extremists weapons and told to go forth and topple governments that have been in stable rule for 40, 50 years. Of course, for example, Gadaffi himself sponsored terrorist activities so it's a tricky situation when dealing with uprisings against dictators themselves who are no great allies of the West, nor paragons of human rights. All I'm saying is the enemy of your enemy is NOT necessarily your friend and sometimes the best thing to do is to put on a friendly face, lure your enemies out into the open under the guise of assistance, then scorch the earth. How many Al Queda operatives could NATO have extinguished by supporting the rebels in say Librya for a while and then blowing them all to hell when their numbers were sufficiently concentrated? Just a thought.

Ahh, Tipsy! A mighty good argument you make for the end justifying the means. Well done!!
