newest members
I also want to give a warm welcome to the list of new members.
Now with the pledge class of members I hope they tell us why they
joined this fine club. I've been here quite a while, would have to check
the club stats to see just how long. jkarp suggested I join way back then.
If any one is interested in a friendly unrated game just send me a message.
clashofpawns I will accept a rated game against you! If you want to play.
Can I be white? LOL
I have not played clash yet and believe you have very few losses if any...
I always say a draw against a higher rater player will suit me just fine..
This goes out to everyone who is 2000+
(I'm just talking the talk! and looking to have my rating increased here with some team games)
ANY-TAKERS???

What's interesting is that clashofpawns is coaching or mentoring the founder of this club. I know this since there is an ongoing unrated game. Also, the Joann just mentioned joined right after Fiat Lux closed down. And, yes, a number of years ago, I suggested this club to Ron. As I remember him liking the, original, Walking the Walk club which as noted here, the master mater started. I knew that Ron was going to like this club, and it turned out to be even more successful then one could bargain, as not only did we have separate mentoring groups and coaches from the previous; but we also had archduke_piccolo. As posted in the Chess Problems Lovers club, I remember the simulated consultation game that ION played against his students.

Re: Clashofpawns
Hi Ron,

Many thanks for your feedback on this.

I will be delighted to give you an unrated game and have now sent you an unrated challenge. If you have too many games on I will understand.

At the moment Clashofpawns is trying to keep his games workload down (I have just seen his profile page) but may be able to give you a challenge later.

I have to say that I did manage an unrated game against Clashofpawns which I lost. I have not annotated it but I will put it here with the GA analysis so that you will at least see how this loss occurred.

game

At least the other team members old and new will now have some idea of what they are up against when they play Clashofpawns!

Kind regards,

Joanne

I accepted!
Unrated it is... I did not even notice that... It goes to show you read over any challenges Some people play really fast and want to play a 2 day game, Yours is better 7 days.

Clash and I will eventually play, looking forward to our game...

I can understand where clashofpawns is coming from. It might be due to The Voice and American Idol. For example, on a regular basis, I don't play more then 6 simultaneous games. But, with these shows, the max I'll play is only half that number. So, I've got 3 games right now, but I will not play anymore games until the series is over which will be next week. Then, I'll slowly go back. The first person I'd start with is one of my students. But, I will play less when I've got the busy shows which might be the case with Sasha since she put this is when she put it on her profile.

Sasha also has 18 simultaneous games, and I know where that's more then one could chew off. As I once played 20 games at once, and it was too much, even when, I had free time.

true 18 games
is alot some ppl play over 180 now that is really hard to figure.

BTW, I annotated Joann's game against clashofpawns, as I, at a later point, used a tactic just like it against Tom Walsh to win the game. gameknot.com

It won't be annotated yet because of how long the game lasted. And, after looking at it, I realized that I could've played even better and won quicker since there were missed opportunities to win a R right away. But, I was fixated on the passed pawn. Towards, the very end, I sacked my R to promote. He resigned as I was going to skewer, sac my Q for his R, and then promote with the other pawn. And, it would've been in a very similar situation. It's worth noting that this game was only 2 after Joann's resignation, so on May 18th. I was white, and it went: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Bd6 4.O-O Nd4 5.Nxd4 exd4 6.d3 a6 7.Bc4 Nf6 8.Bg5 Be5 9.Nd2 d6 10.Nf3 Bg4 11.h3 Be6 12.Nxe5 dxe5 13.Bxe6 fxe6 14.Bxf6 Qxf6 15.Qh5+ g6 16.Qf3 Qxf3 17.gxf3 Rg8 18.c3 O-O-O 19.c4 Rg7 20.Rac1 c5 21.a3 Rdg8 22.b4 cxb4 23.axb4 g5 24.c5 Rc7 25.Rb1 h5 26.Rfc1 Rf8 27.Kg2 Kd7 28.b5 axb5 29.Rxb5 Ke7 30.Rb6 Rb8
31.c6 bxc6 32.Rcb1 Kf6 33.Rc1 h4 34.Rc5 g4 35.f4 gxh3+ 36.Kxh3 Ke7 37.Rxe5 Kd6 38.Rh5 Ra7 39.Rb4 Ra3 40.Rxd4+ Kc7 41.Re5 Rd8 42.Rxd8 Kxd8 43.Rxe6 Rxd3+ 44.Kxh4 Rf3 45.f5 Rxf2 46.f6 Rh2+ 47.Kg5 Rg2+ 48.Kf5 Rf2+ 49.Ke5 c5 50.Rc6 Rg2 51.Ke6 Rg6 52.Rxc5 Rg8
53.Kf7 Rg4 54.e5 Rg5 55.e6 Rxc5 (the sac because of) 56.e7+ Kc7 57.e8=Q Rc6 58.Qe5+ Kb6 59.Qd4+ Kc7 60.Qf4+ Kd7 61.Qe4 And, Tom resigned here. The reason being is because no matter what Tom Walsh, I was going to check and grab his R, and after Tom takes back I'd continue with Kg6, followed by, f7 where I'd promote. Tom was familiar with this pattern and knew that it was hopelessly. But, what's significant is that despite the mistakes, I remember what Sasha did to get that unstoppable passer.

You're welcome Joann. I considered annotating it, at some point, but having been able to apply what I saw from Sasha made me decide to annotate it right away. And, I annotated the OTB game that I posted with Tom Walsh. I will also be posting it in other places for ION. gameknot.com You might also want to show this annotation to clashofpawns. Of course, I made a blunder which I overlooked, as well as, Tom. So, there were missed opportunities, but what I kept in mind is the way that Sasha won. So, I sacked, but this time, it was just a R without anything else to promote in a very similar way.

Hi redfox!
Thank you for your kind words and thank you jo for accepting me! I have posted in the Introductions thread so I won't repeat myself here (since I dislike spam).

Here is the game in question for those curious:

And here is my most recent victory on GameKnot, I do feel sorry for this player. Poor fellow had no chance at just about any stage:

I would love to work my way up to be recognised as a Master in this club. I've got a ways to go I think but its a goal well worth aiming for.

I have found that I have a talent for teaching people to the point where they are better than me. I used to play StarCraft 2 alot and was at one stage in the top 20% of the world. Took on a few students and now all those guys and gals are leagues ahead of me

"When I left you I was but a learner, now I am the master" is a phrase I actually love to read from my students

Hi Michael (Valifoor)!
Saw that checkmate too! Well played!

Just a word on the opening. Damiano Defense can be an opening where you lose quickly if you make the wrong follow up. If your opponent captures on e5 with his knight, do not take the knight! You will be subject to a withering attack along the Fool's Mate diagonal as black did in that game.

The correct follow up is 3. ...... Qe7 (the MacGregor/Chicorin Defense). This will win back the lost pawn but you will have to take care that your queen does not get pinned on the e column. If black manages to play correctly he will usually castle queenside.

In this game, Bobby Fischer concedes a Very Low Draw to the Kentucky State Champion, Bobby MacGregor who played the Damiano against him in a simultaneous exhibition.

www.bing.com

In this game Chigorin concedes a very low draw against Schiffers after playing Damiano Defense.

www.chessgames.com

I did play an unrated game against dmaestro who annotated it as Damiano's Defanged. I lost that game.

Would you recommend the Damiano's Defense?

You the jury decide.

With kind regards,

Joanne

That particular opening seems to me to be fraught with all sorts of potentially nasty pitfalls if you aren't careful.

Either you struggle against an onslaught on the weakest pawn (imho opinion anyway) in the game but you have to take care as the Queen (as you rightly said) can all too easily be pinned if you're not careful.

This opening I would not recommend to a beginner/low ranked player in any sense of the word. There are too many land mines in it for these players.

Joanne (and gang!) should I annotate that game and put my thoughts as I was thinking them during that game featuring the Damiano's Defense?

Or would it be more beneficial to annotate the second game?
