Progress and Setting Goals
This is something that Fred once went over with me. Shortly after I was reinstated in this club, in late July of 2015, I talked the talk a lot. But, I achieved my goals and was just near 1300 then. I didn't have much goals except to just make it there. easy19 said that progress was everything and didn't even want me posting anything until I reached it. When I did, the master mater said to keep working on it. Well, I didn't take him seriously because the teaching style just didn't blend in with my style of learning. So, I didn't listen once I achieved 1300 because, at that point, I accomplished all that I wanted to. And, even not being taken seriously by other players, which he noted, I was still coaching and mentoring students. So, I didn't really listen him, even when he even when he went on leave for the Pacific Trail. As I was just happy with what I accomplished and didn't think I needed anything else, at the time. But, he said that the main thing was setting goals and trying to improve which is where, even though I didn't went by it, he also talked about ELO rating. Everything changed, as of today, so I have come to an agreement about what he posted in terms of making progress back in the Runners and Mentors Annotations. And, that's due to a chess quote by GM Susan Polgar who I follow on her blogspot and social media. One of her more recent quotes is, "Never be satisfied with what you have accomplished. That is the past. Keep making new goals and aim higher. Otherwise, others will pass you by." This aligns with what Fred posted. And, now that Jack's tournaments have ended, I'm back to focusing on trying to get a 1400 rated, which might take a year or two, but I go back to aiming to get there.

Also, when I went through my thought process, there's more to it which also, until recently, not listen to Fred about setting new goals or going for progress, and that's even when I said just where I wanted to be and where I went until a few days ago. I like training, so just that one thing wasn't true for me, but everything else was. That included, sometimes, bad headaches which occurred when I wanted 1300 alone, and those headaches sometimes lasted the next day. But, I kept this other chess quote in mind from Susan as well which I really like and also changed my attitude. As her quote reads, "Why choose to be average when you can be great? Most chess players normally hate every minute of training. But the pain you are suffering today can bring you a lifetime of rewards. Nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough!"

Well, I acheived a goal which just wasn't good. Part of it was having the rating on the back burner. Now, I have a new rating goal of 1400, as what Fred wanted. But, I'll do it in steps, and, unlike before, if I lose on the way or have my rating, temporarely lowered, I won't get upset. It's just part of the mental workout for trying to become a better. And, along the way I might even learn something like not going overboard since too much can also be counterproductive. But, we have that goal, and if or when I reach that, then I'd go for increasing it by 50 points each. As my aim is to have this be a gradual process but still improve.

I did go too far there. I should've just allowed a draw by rep, as opposed to, interpose with the Q. And, then we get into this final position. As his last move was 44.Qc5 If I didn't think in terms of more work to improve, I would've seen the threat and answered with 44...Qa8, as opposed to 44...Qb2?? which allowed the mate. Anyway, here is the game. gm=gameknot.com This is where slow but steady with thinking will win the race.
