Calming....

Indeed
Beethoven is a long time favourite of mine. I have a number of sets with his sonatas - Kempff, Barenboim, Kovacevich. Personally I prefer Kempff - amazing precision! - but for sheer emotional content Barenboim takes the prize

Speaking of calming... do you know Galuppi? I discovered him when on vacation in Venice (his hometown) couple of years back: www.youtube.com

I love Barenboim's set of Beethoven's piano sonatas also.

I haven't heard of Galuppi?

Galuppi
Nor had I, before the friendly man in the shop in Venice told me I absolutely had to buy him!

Venetian composer, born on the Island of Burano (close to the main city) 1706, so a generation after Vivaldi and half a century before Mozart. Turns out he was actually quite well known at the time, and I read somewhere that a couple of festivals featuring him has meant a growing popularity in recent years too.

His style - especially in his piano music - is sparse, extremely lyrical, and - I would say - almost romantic; a kind of mix between Mozart and Beethoven, but with fewer notes   - and definitely almost a century ahead of his time in its style. One grows to appreciate and love him... It's kinda difficult to find something for piano, except his 5th sonata, on Youtube, but here is one: www.youtube.com

Also, at the same time, acquired a couple of CDs with Tartini, who is also very interesting! If you only know Italian classical music from Vivaldi, you're definite in for an eye-opener! Let me see if I cannot find a link... yes: www.youtube.com

Re: I love that piece, Janet (Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence String Sextet).

There is also an orchestral version of this marvelous work, but I prefer the original sextet version.

Hence my name: "ChamberNut". It is my favourite form of classical music (chamber music).

Something beautiful: a contribution
To follow up B-V's suggestion: Here is an example of Björling's timbre. From Tchaikowsky's Eugene Onegin, the well-known and popular Lensky's aria (here sung in Swedish)
