Another tip....

Playing less games, not more is generally a better thing to do.You heard the statement before....quality over quantity, right? Its better to spend more analytic time on say 3 or 4 games on GK than 50 to 100 games!Too many players have this mindset:Well,I paid for this expensive GK gold/silver/platinum membership that allows me to play 50 to 100 games simultaneously and you better bet i'm going to get my moneys worth! You may get your moneys worth, but you won't for the most part get your full chess potential abilities, best game play and better rating rushing through 50 or more games that have say, a 3 day time limit, especially with all the other things you have going on in your private life.Spending more time, rechecking more variations of your moves before you move, perhaps doing a bit of reading/research on a specific line that your opponent just gave you and you never seen it before...all takes time.Don't lie to yourself!Your NOT going to have much time in the week to qualitatively check through 50 or more games on every move...your going to be rushed and you will more than likely have a much higher increased probability of blundering or making a weak move that you just may have been able to avoid,if you gave yourself much more time to come back to the game a few times during those 3 or 4 days!

I have seen hundreds of corresp players rating graphs over the years. And I have discovered that for the most part, players that take on way too many games at one time generally "flatline" in rating or go down a bit.In other words, they win, then they lose, win and lose...so they are getting nowhere fast!I tested a number of players by convincing them to play 10 games instead of 100 games.I can remember a few guys at around a 1500 rating that I tested for the "experiment"& out of all of those tested except one...after one year, their rating jumped to nearly a hundred points more! Most of them were beginning to defeat a much higher class of opponent!

See,some players on GK are simply here for the thrill of playing chess and thats fine. But many of those same players also have NO INTENTION of actually trying to improve their chess playing strength. They may say they do or "wish"it,but it will usually never happen. Why?Because you must take chess more seriously and must actually take the time to buckle down, read the books, spend some $$ on more updated books,DVD's,chess computers and more.
And play LESS games!!

I know,I know...its way too boring to only play 5 games instead of 60 games...right?Whats the "thrill"in that?Hey,you might get lucky and win all 60 games and get as high as TA in rating...right?No.....stop dreaming!Your deluding yourself!Sure you can win 60 games in a row,if you play 60 players that are 500 or more rating points below you!But have you improved your game play? No,you have not.Now try that with 60 opponents at your rating or a 100 points higher. How many of those players could you have beaten that you lost to or drawn if you had taken a bit more time to analyze the games?Hmmmmm.Notice my rating. And how many games do I play at one time? One right now only! And generally no more than 4 or 5 games at one time!!Yes,I take my games seriously and look over each and every move like a DNA analysis under and electron microscope before I click on that move submit button!

So its all how serious you take your games.Playing less games may be boring, but it is very possible that you may find yourself winning a bit more with less of a game load than more...and then it won't be so boring once you see your rating number increase!

Do,what I do when I have played out my one or two game moves for a 3 day period and have no more corresp chess to play....play some blitz! That takes up much of that "chess fix" while you wait for your slow responding opponent to respond to your move! You can practice some wild tactics in 5 or 10 min blitz on GK for a day or two and then get back into your more serious corresp games. You can learn from blitz as well, you know.

Less is better you know!Remember that.

Can't do that?Must play your 50 to 100 games at all times or else you will not have enough chess drug in your veins?Fine, but then don't ask TA for advice in how to improve your game play!I just gave you some advice and you refused it!I might as well talk to a wall...atleast I will get an intelligent echo back!Ha ha!

TA do you recommend the suggest a move be on or off?
Suggest a move being when you click on a piece, it shows you the options of what you can do.

Fred, will you elaborate further?Do you mean in a non rated tactics type of game on GK or puzzles? For as far as I know, suggesting a move in regular corresp games is not allowed with any engine type of suggestion alternative moves, nor should it be.But in any case,I think for learning purposes,I would say its best to keep it off and later check back with the alternate moves using your own engine.Or keep it on,but do not actually peer at the alternate moves until you have gone through your own tactical sequence first to compare later. For I have always been a believer that looking at the answer(s)first and then plugging in the question is not really a good way to learn, even with alternate suggestions!Figuring out those alternates on your own,is key.And then checking later to compare is better.

In summary,my overall suggestion(not to confuse you) would be to not turn on a "suggest move"ever and use a fritz/shredder program aside of your non rated type of game set on about 512MB to analyze different suggestion strings of moves and again, compare the moves to yours, but see why your moves were not as good and go back and analyze your tactical weakness's.....in POST GAME analysis mode only.
