Just a few small musical notes...
can sometimes can bring on a deeper depth of emotion and meaning beyond that of a famous symphony. It depends upon the images one remembers, life experiences and inner feeling of all of us on an individual basis.

Believe it or not, I am a musician. I used to play the trombone and was in a symphony orchestra. In fact, I performed in a Carnegie, a few months ago. After graduating from college, however, I stopped playing my trombone because I knew that I would not be any more concerts or an orchestra, that required private lessons.

I was a musician since 1964.On and off that is.Nothing major, just club/lounge type of bands.Played drums professionally(part time)for years.Drums from grade school, high school, college, even the mummers in Philadelphia! One of the best percussionists in the state.

Sold my drums about 2 years ago.Inactive right now with music/drums.Probably won't be playing again, unless I decide to play again when I officially retire.

Music
This is a fun subject that brings back a lot of memories. I have played piano since early grade school and graduated in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from CSU Fullerton. Oh the people you meet and the events you can get involved in. But it is a tricky field to make a living in unless you are really good, no fabulous and lucky.
this is in contrast to the TV shows where people dare to put their musicality on the line for everyone to see. Back then you had to prove it to a professor first.

Hey ed,
I was actually on the Ted Mack amateur hour show on TV in the 60's!Those are the days.
I also played at the Valley Forge,Pa hospital for the Vietnam vets, sat in for 2 songs at Buddy Rich's place in NYC when he had a club and a few other places. In NYC and in the Poconos in Pa,we use to just drive around with our instruments in the cars at times we had no "bookings"and simply walk in to a club and ask if they needed some music for the night!Sometimes they said yes and we had money for the night.I played floor shows(strippers, comedian acts, magicians) as well, but those are sort of out of style now.

Music
Yes, in grade school I was started on that. For several years our school choir sang a couple of Christmas evenings at Buffum's in Orange. The mall is now called Main Place, but the wall, tile floor and entrance we use is still there. In high school my duo partner and I were invited to play at the annual convention at Palo Alto, and of course in college the other musical instruments need a keyboard for solos, trios, quartets and for their quarterly and final exams (concerts). And there were a couple of school productions where I was able to help out. Have you tried to find your Ted Mack video?

Ed,
I actually have a copy of my music and drum solo that was transferred on to 8mm film from the Mack show.Of course you need the projector to view it,which is in a box down in the basement. That was about a year or so before the mainstream "psychedelic age" came about.About 2 years after that I was in a band called the "Subgeneration"....or the "Subs" for short.A psychedelic band with strobe and fog lights playing songs like Strawberry fields forever,White rabbit,Lucy in the sky with diamonds,Surrealistic pillow,In a gadda da vida,Strawberry Alarm clock hits like "Incense and peppermints" and much more.Yes,I was a hippy back then, but never had the long hair!

Funny,I even had a set of drum sticks that I used once in a while that actually had a miniature strobe flash built into the top portion of the stick inside a plexiglass type of housing. So just breathing in the air in clubs like the "Zodiac",combined with a pitcher of my favorite brew sitting on top of my floor tom was simply "cool man".Peace!

That 8mm would be something to see. Do you have those drumsticks on 8mm somewhere?

No,the sticks came later with the band and the band was never taped that I am aware of.

Later on,around 1970-71,I was in another band called "The Tijuana Brats".So we copied the Tijuana Brass music from Herb Alpert quite well that we got alot of bookings in private clubs.I remembered that a year later we won what was called "The battle of the bands" with about 15 other bands(5 pieces or less in manpower)competing for $$ and a trophy at the local college.

I'm not active anymore with those things, but the memories are still there.

Favorite music
Does anyone listen to music while playing?
I prefer classical music, without headphones/earplugs.

Strangely enough,I can't listen to music when i'm concentrating on a chess move or moves.
The reason is that being a past professional musician,my attention would be drawn to the music, rather than the game and it could easily throw my game off.I'd be subconsciously transposing the music to a different key or placing a better percussion move into the music, ect ect.Non musicians may not understand this, but it is true.
