Introduction
Hi sorry for the late introduction.

My name is Richard from South Africa.

I came to the knowledge of Chess as a kid from a stranger, which was closely watched by my Mother. the result of my lessons then was a passion for a game that grew my logic and common sense for the years to come. January 2013 I started to take chess learning very seriously while still enjoying it with a respectful and happy spirit. I hit a brutal skill deadlock at 1250+/- and was going no where fast and started studying a book called "Amateur's Mind" by Jeremy Silman, which I am currently busy with Chapter 3 and I ramped to 1320+/- and that feeling of succeeding has driven me since. stronger players are not beating me so badly anymore. I want more growth, more skill, more depth and that brings me here by referral of Checkcharlie my team Captain on GK. it is a pleasure and honor to join others on the road to improving self. I look forward to the experience I can gain from other and the little I can share.

God bless

Welcome Earnie!
I look forward to your discussions and input in the club.Hope I can help your game play out in time!Sometimes you will find that I intentionally go against the standard method of conventional learning wisdom that is programmed into so many players, but I like to mix it up and you pick and choose what you want to read!Good luck in the club!

well, i was. started out too late for serious play and never really followed the game due to work. peak was 2200 in europe. too little time for otb play, and now i've little time for that also. so, i play at gk and that seems to be enough. nice thing about corr play is: i can pace myself and only play when i'm at my sharpest, or want to play. no long hours at the chessboard, adjourned games, with another game another on top, deep into the evening. wears you out.

Introduction
Greetings everyone!

Allow me to tell you a bit about myself. I am a 28-year old chess enthusiast currently residing in Keizer, OR. I learned chess (as did everyone else in our family) from my grandpa, who in the 1970's and 1980's was a strong FIDE Candidate Master, rated between 2150 and 2200. I lived in Moscow until 1997, when I was 12. It was then that I relocated to Los Gatos, California with my family and around the year 2000 I started to attend the Kolty Chess Club in Campbell. A couple of years later, I was introduced to GM (back then, still IM) Vinay Bhat and started attending the Mechanics Institute Chess Club (the oldest chess club in the country!) in San Francisco. I started teaching chess for a living from 2002 and worked as a chess instructor for Academic Chess Institute until late 2005. From around 2006 until 2011, i took an extended break from chess. About two years ago I returned to it, with a revitalized focus on studying and improving. I am currently being coached by FIDE Master Charles Schulien twice a week, as well as a daily regiment of tactics and endgame puzzles. Although I have not played a USCF rated game since 2005, I suspect my skill level to be in the 2100 range at the moment. Cheers everyone!

A Hearty Welcome, Alexey!
If your chess teaching and instruction is as well developed as your punctuation and grammar of the English language since the age of twelve, then you truly are the master! I mean that as the best compliment! joe

Hi!
Good to be here; looking forward to seeing some of the finer points of this fun exercise we call chess.

About me: Like darknite13, my name is Ken; I started playing as a youth; but never started trying to play in otb tournaments until recently, even though I've played chess for probably close to 40 years now. I have no rating, but that should change before long. I usually just play chess for fun - but don't be fooled by that comment. It's fun to win!

I like 1. e4 as white mostly because it seemed to be Fischer's favorite; and I like the Caro-Kann as black, because it's so simple to learn, and I've found it can nearly always be played no matter what white does... almost, anyways! Currently researching the positions that arise from the white king-side pawn storm, because that is the only real critical aspect of that opening for black or so it seems to me. So I've lost to good opponents here in Blitz games rated below 1600 and defeated more than one player rated above 2300 when I haven't been in blunder mode.

I do understand a lot of nuances of the game, but am sorely lacking in knowing the opening moves more than just four or five moves into a game - which is right now most likely my biggest Achilles heel. So I'll be working on increasing my repertoire of opening moves; I do know most of the strategies therein even if I don't know all the variations, so although I expect to learn a lot more than I can contribute from being here, every now and then I'll probably have something to say!   And thanks to Tactical Abyss for inviting me; I think this is going to be a lot of fun.

Hi Ken!
Yes,we have met in the blitz room a few times and from some of your strong moves,I can easily see that you are a formidable player on the board, especially midgame.Like I always said, you can never tell about those 1200 rated who haven't played enough corresp games on GK!I've been killed a few times on the board by a 1200,now and then...well,at least in the blitz rooms.Even though its only a 5 minute game, you can tell much about a player very often in those simple 5 minutes.Well, again, welcome to the club and I hope that I can be of chess service to you in time.I already have quite a number of posts you may want to read into a bit when you have the time to do so.Much more to come!Questions about openings and more, databases,I can supply.

Yes,Fischer coined the phrase....."e4,best by test",but i'm not so sure that is true anymore today! So many GM's and masters are winning with the closed 1.d4 games that its kind of head on head, statistically, especially if you take the Sicilian response to 1.e4 out of the equation!

And by the way,i'm from the Fischer era as well!Played Fischer in NYC when I was very young and just learning...my dad took me to see him!

Again,have fun in the club!

Thank you for accepting me. Tactical-abyss has opened my eyes when pointing out the use of data bases, MCO's and who knows how many other resources by opponents playing 6 to 10 games in 72 hours , enough time for a lot of research for the best move.

Welcome Emilio!
I hope I can help your game play out in time, that is,if you want. But again, the club is about any subject, not just chess,so I welcome any future posts by you or others.I was born in Florida, just to mention. Its amazing that you are probably one of the first members to come to GK from 2002.GK probably just came online around that time!I was here before 2008,even though my profile states that year...(I was someone else years before 2008 with a different handle name),but certainly not as far back as you!Glad to see that you have supported GK for so long.
Are you a life member by chance? The price of a life membership was very cheap years ago.
