I'm so sorry, Joe. I will be praying for your father's recovery.

Thank You Everyone!
Thank you everyone, I really appreciate that

So in short, what happened was, my dad was tarring/patching our rook after a leak from the last storm. He just finished and was checking everything, but when he went to check our patio roof, the part that connected to the main house collapsed with him on it. Thankfully I was home and was able to help him immediately. I thought he was broken up bad, as he did fall a full story onto the brick ground, and as I said, although he got up, he was shaking badly at some points.

Thankfully after my mom came home a few minutes later, she took him to the hospital and all tests came back negative. Nothing broken, no concussion or further back injury, however, he did break his tailbone a few months ago, and that injury was reaggravated so he is in some pain, but really, after a fall like that, I'd say the result could have been far worse, and thankfully it was not

I'll let you know any further updates. I should be on again some, but not 100% yet, as I'm still helping him out and stuff, and honestly, I don't know how to feel after seeing him on the ground like that, I've never really dealt with something so serious before. I'll be back at full strength soon for sure though

Good news. Your dad was very lucky but will be in pain for some time. Good thing you were there
when he fell.

I am so happy to learn that, Joe. I hope he will be pain free soon and back to normal. He is, indeed, very fortunate.

Full Update
Thanks again everyone. Here's a full update on what happened:

My dad was patching our old roof after it leaked during the last storm. Sadly, the leak was over my old 1896 Showinger piano (yes, 1896, no typo). I can't practice right now and it may be ruined

Anyways, he just finished and noticed a crack between the house and the patio. He went to check it out, and when he stepped on the patio, it collapsed with him on it. I was in my room, and it sounded like, I don't know, something huge falling for sure. I figured something other than my dad fell off the roof, but I had quite the surprise when I rushed out of my room a few seconds later. He was hurt and bruised, and his body was in shock as he was shaking, but after a trip to the emergency room, the doctors found no major injuries thankfully. He broke his tailbone a few months ago though, and that injury was reaggravated. He is walking around again though, so the recovery is going well

This could have gone far worse in multiple ways. It's a miracle my dad didn't even break anything from I think a straight down 12 foot drop. Also, he had a pair of scissors on the roof. These aren't paper scissors, these things are all metal, heavy and over a foot long! I later found out they fell with him, maybe two feet from where his head was when I got to him. The thought of that, well, let's not think about it

On top of that, I had just finished something and I was planning on checking on him within only a couple minutes. If I had been out there when it collapsed, well, it would be realistic to say that I might not be here now. Thankfully the scenario that happened was no where near the worst case

It seems the patio did collapse from some wood rot, however, the patio, which I think weighs over a quarter ton, was connected and held by only 16 six-inch nails, instead of bolts like it should have been. It's a miracle it didn't fall much sooner, as my dad has walked on it many times before. His ex-wife had it put in in the early 1990s, and it appears it has no permits. A disaster waiting to happen I suppose

Well anyways, my dad is doing good, and so is my mom and myself. I should be going strong and back at 100% on Gameknot by Monday (PST)

I am so glad to learn that your family is intact, Joe. Your Dad was very fortunate. I hope he continues to heal with no further problems.

Things got Worse...
Well, my dad is fine, but...things happened...I'll explain:

My dad just finished patching the roof when he fell. Unfortunately, the rook leaked again during the next storm a couple days later. We need a new roof here as this old one I think is approaching 30 years and has been patched many times.

The reason for the leak though, may be astounding. I heard a bird on the roof a couple days ago. I went to check it out, and it was a crow, peeling the roof and picking away at the hard work my dad had done!!! I couldn't believe it, I knew crows didn't like humans, but this is ridiculous!

Well, IT GETS WORSE:

One week later (yesterday), at almost the exact same time my dad fell the week before, due to the leak, the ceiling caved in, creating a big mess of insulation and wet drywall, landing on the piano as well of course. I type this message now at 1 A.M. with a headache after working all day to clean that up

IT GETS WORSE (possibly):

The house I live in was built in the 60s, and some of the insulation that came down was the original. Apparently asbestos wasn't considered a problem back then. Well, I may not be living as long as I want, as I breathed in a lot right after the collapse happened. I want to hope not, but if I get lung cancer, I'll know why

Can it get worse? Well, if you hear about an earthquake in Southern California, then yes, yes it can...

Well, things are crazy for me, but at least no one got hurt any more. My dad is still recovering, and the house, although a mess, is still standing. I can't set my vacation flag again for a few days, so I'll be on more again, but not at 100% like before obviously. I'll get there soon enough   I want another vacation though

That sounds awful, Joe. I am so sorry. We bought a house in 1978, sold it before we moved to Washington State in 2003, and then when a pipe froze and broke in the garage when the new owner was living there, they found asbestos in that house also. The house had to cleared of all asbestos, but it was repaired and is lived in again. They also found radon in that house. I had a radon detector in the basement, but radon never registered on it when we lived there.

I doubt that you will develop lung cancer from that one exposure. I think it takes years for asbestos to do that. For instance, someone who works with asbestos from day to day, but another far more scholarly and knowledgeable than myself would know. My husband worked with fiber glass for years and years at TWA, and we were always concerned about that. But TWA didn't seem to be.

FYI Joe... there's a Gameknot loophole that will allow you to take consecutive vacations if you ever need them. Say you take a 5 day vacation and then at the end of the 5 days something comes up and you're unable to play. If your emergency postponement hasn't kicked in within the last three months, you can allow one of your games to timeout, trigger the emergency postponement, and then extend it for the additional time you require.

This will obviously only work once every three months, but it has been necessary for myself once and occasionally my teammates who send me the "I might timeout" messages with a similar conundrum.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about that brief exposure to asbestos. While you optimally want zero exposure to it, most of the people who had serious ramifications due to their exposure were exposed to A LOT of it. I'm talking about either installing it for a living, or demolition back in the 80's when the dangers were first coming to light.

That is good information, JJ.

06-Feb-19, 16:06

king_0_nothing, that's interesting, I didn't think emergency postponement would kick in right after using a vacation flag. I looked it up and it doesn't say otherwise. Wow I had no idea, thanks JJ, I'll definitely keep this in mind

It does say it will only kick in a minimum of once every 4 months for premium subscribers though. I thought is was 3 as well, but I've only needed it twice since joining Gameknot over 5 years ago, and it's been well over 4 months since the last time. I'm glad to know that's always available if I need it.

And thank you both, I wasn't sure, as my chest felt heavy the day it happened, and I forgot to wear a mask at first, as things were kind of in a panic at first. Now though, I think it was more because of the fact that I have moderate problems with asthma, so perhaps that's why I was feeling ill. I was fine the next day. And I know I haven't worked around asbestos much, if any at all, so what you both said it good to know, thank you

I know this may be kind of off subject here in this forum, but it involves using the vacation flag I think, so hopefully it's okay to discuss it here:

Can anyone explain why after you use your vacation flag, extra time will get added for no obvious reason a few days later? This isn't the emergency postponement. I couldn't make my moves yesterday, so I knew today that by tonight I had to make my moves or time would run out in some of them. Well, I come on today, and 24 extra hours have been provided to all my games. Why? Is there something I don't know about?

I understand an extra day is added on Sundays

09-Feb-19, 19:34

Wait really? That's interesting, though at the moment of this post, it's still Saturday for me and Gameknot HQ. I have noticed this happen before, now I'm gonna be looking every week lol
mickod
09-Feb-19, 19:46

OK so it is done on Saturdays

Q4: It seems extra time was added to a game and my opponent hasn't moved yet. Why?

A: 24 hours are automatically added to all non-postponed games (but not to exceed the original time control) every Saturday between 5-6pm local GK time (PST) to prevent timeouts over the weekend for people who play from work/school and don't have computers at home. It is designed to ensure that if you make your move on Friday, you should have until the same time on Monday to make your next move.

Also, extra time will be added to all games in case of an unplanned website/network outage lasting more than an hour or due to any other extraordinary events (such as natural disasters, etc.) affecting the majority of players on GameKnot. A special announcement will be sent out to everyone in such cases.

Please don't rely on the extra time being added for you and always postpone your games manually using the link located directly below your active games list, if you need more time to make your next moves.

They do it because I remember when, sometime ago, I either looked at rules, but I think it was games. It's more recent as it happened, I believe it was, about 2 years ago. They do this because weekends are primetime. So, it's social time, or it's busier at work. But, I think from there, it's the social life, like me on one of them. Therefore, people aren't on as much, so they try to accommodate people by giving them an extra 24 hours to move so that there's a little leeway for the social life. That way, you won't lose on time or be forced to use an emergency vacation flag.

BTW
I have just postponed my games, but it's a good thing with a big vacation coming up. As, I'll be AFK tomorrow due to working and then packing. Then, I'm going away the next day for a week. I'll let you know how it went when I come back.

Next time someone sets their vacation flag, check what the minimum is you can set. It seems that it has been updated, and now you can set your vacation flag for a minimum of 3 days, which is up from 2. If this is so, I wonder why Gameknot decided to do this?

I'll be away through the weekend. I'll still have access to internet, but I won't be on all too often, so it may not be the best time to send a team match to my team, but I'll try to check where I can. I should be back to the usual by Monday.

And I just sent a challenge to TRITON. Oh well, I may cancel it later today, Joe, and send it Monday.

Good question on the Gameknot change on postponements.

06-Jun-19, 21:23

Sorry about that Mike, that may be best. I didn't realize the hotel internet would have the worst internet connection I ever saw. I can hardly hold a connection. Oh well, I guess that's how they want you to go premium, no thanks lol.

Monday probably would be best. And yeah, it's still 3 days minimum you can set. I'm assuming Gameknot did that so no one could set a short vacation flag every 2 days. I'm only assuming.

Well I'm back, but I was at the beach. Now I'm back in the valley, and it seems summer is making itself known, and I have no air conditioning at home

Well, I'll get through it, I shouldn't be on vacation again for a while.

The Saturday night miracle
My wife (queenforaknight) always looks forward to the Saturday night miracle. It gets her through the weekend. I think it is done for the benefit of students or workers who only have internet access through work or school.

I was on the beach , what a perfect way to spend your time 🍹

As I sit here in the UK , in the wind in the rain and cold 🌧🌬

I have forgotten what a beach is .......

But I have heating ! 😁

The problem with some GK's unfit for purpose laws is, vacation flags can be abused , especially if someone is in a mini tournament , but why they would do it I will never know ...
If someone has a problem fair enough ,

We just had one of our unusual heat waves here in the Northwest United States. I was soooo hot yesterday, and, like Joe (joveyboy) and his family, I do not have air conditioning. Fortunately, this is not too frequent in my part of the country and it usually breaks in 3 days, which it did during the night. I actually had to close my window this morning. Joe, you have my understanding and my sympathy.
