amacivn, I have to assume this is why Gameknot rose the minimum to set your vacation flag from 2 days to 3 days, to hinder players from abusing the vacation flag as much. That's the only assumption I could figure out.

shirlmygirl, sorry to hear that, yeah high heat like that isn't all too common in that part of the U.S. I'm glad it's cooling down there. It's cooling down here as well, supposed to be in the low 80s, which is just fine for California. With the work coming to my house, hopefully air conditioning will be available soon, especially before the inevitable 100+ weather

Shaky Ground
I suddenly don't like earthquake country...

I'm a good distance away from the California earthquakes that took place, about 120 miles I think from where the 6.4 and 7.1 quakes took place. I still felt it pretty good, I've never been in a big earthquake, especially one that lasted so long, a minute at least I think. No vacation flag yet, but it has been messing me up. I apologize if I got a tad slow and sloppy these past couple days, hopefully the worst has passed and I don't need my vacation flag up for an even bigger quake.

Shaky Ground
I'm sure it is very scary, Joe (joveyboy1). California is well known for earthquakes, and they are expected there. You and your family will probably be OK, but others there certainly are not. Wow! You felt it over 100 miles away. I live in earthquake country too. A big one out in the ocean is expected from the Cascadia range under the surface of the sea. In our town, the tsunami is expected to arrive one hour after the quake. We are supposed to be prepared but probably are not.

Thank you mistee and shirlmygirl, from what I heard, there is plenty of damage around the epicenter, but the quake was centered away from the main San Andreas Fault, more in South-East California, close to Death Valley I think, thus away from the main cities, so damage was minimal in the heavily populated areas, and as far as I know, no severe injuries or deaths anywhere, so at least it wasn't any worse it seems.

I hope you don't experience the worse Shirley, and hopefully you and everyone else will be ready. I doubt everyone can be fully prepared, especially as people who have never experienced an earthquake move in. Southern California hasn't had a major destructive earthquake since 1994, so hopefully this woke up a lot of people who weren't prepared.

I will be on a camping trip, starting later today, going through Sunday, and if all goes well, I'll be back to my usual self by next Monday. Things are different than in times past for me here on Gameknot. For once, I don't have to discourage everyone from sending matches to my team, because this time, I know there is capable help

I'll have little to no internet, but I imagine all will go well on the trip, so with that, see you all next week

Thank you Shirley, all went well. There was a black bear in the campsite one night. I'm glad I was in the camper. I'm glad to be back, though I wouldn't have minded in the trip lasted another two weeks lol

Also I've returned to 473 notifications, oh boy

Bears
We were tenting in Sequoia & had a 2AM visit by a bear who was visiting all the trashcans. The bear banged our pots & pans around, but all he took was a teflon mixing bowl, which we found down the hill later with huge tooth holes.

Wow, scary. I think the bear near me came at about 11 P.M. (Quite early for a bear) and then again at about 3 A.M., digging through the trash cans. I'm glad to be safe in my R.V., the old Dodge-Chrysler from 1973 still works good, even though it only barely has 40,000 miles. And here we have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe with over 240,000 miles, and a 2004 Toyota Prius with over 260,000 miles. Yep that makes sense

My daughter let her dogs behind the fence this morning. She doesn't live with me and she sometimes takes her dogs with her and let's them out to pee, etc. I have woods behind me, which I love. She came back and told me there were large droppings behind the fence, and she thought it might be a bear. I hope not. That is scary. We are hoping it is deer droppings. Are deer droppings big? I have never seen them, but deer go through my property every day. It is their natural route, which we have occupied. I have to spray deer repellent on the plants in my yard that they like to eat. I hope it is deer droppings and not a bear. She said there are berries in the droppings. It could be a cougar, I suppose. I surely do not want to meet up with either animal.

Cougars probably don't eat berries, but I don't know.

Shirl
Bear droppings are quite unique and should be easy to identify
www.google.com

Deer droppings are sets of small spherical "particles", very different from bear

Scat identification
Perhaps this pdf file with pictures will help you identify the droppings.

Thank you stalhandske and bevo for the information. I have never been back there in the woods. I will ask my daughter to take a good look. If it does appear to be bear scat, I will call the wildlife people. I think my area is too populated for bears, but since there are woods behind my house, perhaps there is or are bears back there. The area is very steep, down to a stream, and my husband went down there a couple of times, but he said it was too steep for me. I can look through the fence. I keep it fairly clean back there (I don't clean it, my daughter and grandson do) but I don't want it to get overgrown. The reason I am not sure what deer droppings look like is that I don't think they have ever dropped any in my yard. Since I spray with deer repellant, they go through there very fast, or avoid the area, depending on how mature the deer are. In fact, the deer are a bloody nuisance, as we say in England (but I don't live in England any longer).

After looking at the pictures, I think I have seen deer droppings, but only a few, and I thought at the time it might be a smaller animal.

Three people told me today that they don't think the droppings are from a bear. They think it may even be a racoon, so I am relieved. I thank Stal and Ro for their links, which I took a very good look at. I also saw a photo of the droppings, taken from a cell phone.

I hope you never encounter a bear, but if you do, follow all the safety rules. I think you have to make yourself look as big as possible to try to scare them off, but I'd look it up before trusting what I say, I don't know anything more than half the time lol

TRITON's Captain on Vacation
I always reignite this thread it seems lol

I'll be away until Sunday PST. I don't think it would be a good idea to challenge my team until I return, but just in case, I will have someone available for accepting matches. We'll see what happens, but I should be ready to go with matches again when I come back in a few days. See you all again soon

Slight change, there will be someone readily available to reply to matches, so I don't discourage matches to TRITON while I'm away, send away if you like!

I am back, I came back a day late, sorry. Good thing I had my vacation flag set an extra day just in case. I had a good time, now I'll get back into the swing of things

And thank you Shirley, honestly I generally don't like going out the house, but camping with family and friends is nice

And I hope you have a good vacation too stonedhenge!
