North America team
A thread for the North American team to discuss their moves.

ipsissimus will post the board position whenever a move is made and you will all have 3 days to discuss options and vote for your move. Once decided he will let me know your move (by moving in our unrated game) and I will do the same on the Rest of World Team thread.

No peeking at the other thread. I'm sure no-one would anyway!

Good luck and thank you to all of you for taking part.

I am ready, willing, and eager to start.
So I will vote for 1.d4

This opening is good enough to start any game, since it is a bid
for central control, and opens the opportunity for many variations.

I vote 1.d4 since it avoids a lot of theoretical drawing lines.

d4
For much the same reasons as elyhim. I am a d4 player. I rarely play e4.

At this time, we have two more members
Than on the list, thanks to all for joining.

Since we just started, may I suggest we give other club members time
to decide if they want to join our team.

Let's try to make it a fun game, and win.

In case anyone missed it, 5imon said there will be three day limit for
each move, and ipsissimus will be posting the moves we decide on,
at the main thread.

I am prone to commit errors from time to time, so please help me
if there is any problem with my participation in any discussion.

I suggest c4
The queen's gambit often played at master level.
but am open to other plans by other team members.
elyhim

or we can go into the french with e4

c4 is a good suggestion But e4 to go into the french is my suggestion.
the-sigularity
19-Nov-17, 17:47

the french sounds interesting
That was my first intuition, however, I shy away from it because they
will probably play d5, when we will expose our king, but if the rest
of the team goes with e4, I will go along with it.

C4
Elyhim didn't want a theoretical drawing lines so i like c4 too

I was actually think of the french tarracsh varation. 1. d4 e6 2. e4 d5 3. Ne2!? c5 4. Ngf3 Nc6 5. exd5 exd5 6. Bb5

The French
is not a theoretical drawing line. The French Tarracsh variation would be good or we could see if we could lure them into the Albin-Alekhine-Chatard attack. This is a gambit but in most cases white recovers his pawn quickly. Regardless of whether black accepts that gambit or declines it white will get an attack. This leads to sharp tactical lines where white wins the majority of the time and black wins less than 30% of the time. You can see this at chesstempo.com. The game would proceed this way 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.h4.

If I am not mistaken, similar to Sicilian defense, French defense is usually played by Black against White's king pawn opening 1. e4 but it can also play and transpose into French against White''s 1. d4. For the beginners if you don't want or don't have much time to study many openings, French is a good opening choice as a Black to respond against White's either 1. d4 or 1.e4. The problem for Black is that you have to tackle with White's dominating d4 and e5 central pawns in some variation. Correct me if I am wrong.

Would this be a good time to sum up the votes, to see what

Transposition of French from White's 1.d4 or e4

The above French position can be reached from either White's 1.d4 or e4 ( transposition ) by the following moves.
1. e4 - e6
2. d4- e5
or
1. d4 - e6
2. e4 - d5

The problem is that if White moves 3. e5, White will occupy a commanding central d4, e5 pawn chain and Black should know how to break up this pawn chain. Otherwise, White can castle Queen side and will attack with Blitzkreig pawn storm attack on Black which has castled on king side. That was my experience as a beginner before but I know now how to defend it as a Black player.
