There is also a scene in the novel 'Affliction,' by Russell Banks, in which the main character Wade Whitehouse pulls an abscessed molar with a pair of plyers. Numbed the pain with whiskey and went to dental class. Thursday cannot come fast enough. Those two episodes you mention are forever etched in my brain. Man school.
