Self Confidence
One thing to remember is that one should always believe in him or herself. Remember: Life is full of obstacles. And, knowing how to overcome those obstacles is a way to achieve your goals. No matter how bad the situation, don't get nervous or anxious, instead, as Jack puts it, "Try to find a way out of trouble" It's key because getting nervous can exacerbate the situation. Sometimes, being confident is what will help you pull a swindle in a lost position, as I have experienced.

Is self confidence really something you can create?
I know my game improves or declines with my level of confidence but it isn't something I can't do anything about. At the moment I am on a bit of a roll but at some point soon I know I will lose my current confidence (for whatever reason - and I probably wont know why) and my game will go south.

I'm not sure if it's always confidence. But, from my past games and how it compared to now, self confidence has played a major role. The idea is that when in the worst situation, that is in chess, don't get nervous. It doesn't mean that confidence will win, but getting nervous will often make the situation worse. Instead, it's better to think, I am in trouble, but is there something I can do to get out of trouble. If so, how, and thinking that way will work, more often then not. Sometimes, you can't get out of trouble, but in general, there's usually a way out so maintaining confidence is a good way to do that.
