Inborn or being hip?
I hope no one minds this post, but it is a curiosity I have about a trend I see with tween and teen girls I work with in the community.

Many girls are identifying themselves as bisexual, lesbian, or pansexual that have not yet engaged in a sexual relationship; so my question to them would be, how do you know then? I can't ask this since just because they haven't had a sexual relationship doesn't mean they aren't attracted or drawn to the same sex, but the trend to me seems to be that it is hip or cool to be identified as something other than heterosexual.

I have no children yet, but do any of you who do have kids see this same trend?

Good question. I imagine that if the girls' peer group views bisexual, lesbian and pansexual identity as "cool", there would be pressure to identify with that orientation to "fit in." I imagine some of the factors in the mix are the girls' age, length of time of being aware of the attraction, intensity of the attraction, engagement and level of satisfaction/dissatisfaction and how comfortably it fits with their own sense of self.

Good question. I'm also interested in hearing from others who are seeing this.
