Annotation Alley
Joe has the privilege of his own annotation thread given his prolific posting, but for those of us who only annotate occasionally this is the thread for your best, or possibly, someone else's best if you come across an amazing annotation! I'm kicking it off with Ruben's masterclass about how (unfortunately) to beat the Tipsy! gameknot.com

Thanks. I think this is good idea because due to my work schedule the jkarp campaign with the OTB annotations must hold off. If it weren't for having to work at the same time as chess club, you better believe that I would be there. Therefore, I'm planning to start an annotation thread.

My First Annotation
You know I was wondering why no-one had commented on my first annotation. Then I see it's because I've yet to post a link to it! Thought I did! Must have been a drunken dream! At least the annotation is real! Here we go again for the first time! gameknot.com Kindly check it out if you've got a moment everyone! Though I noticed how hard it was to annotate a game that was done and dusted a while back, am now annotating my games in situ, which helps (I hope) with my chess as well. All this thanks to Joe. Have one on me!

The game was interesting
But after all, you were playing against the "who me worry"? kid. lol No, but seriously, you played a fine game with good annotation, Thanks

Thanks stealth! Yes, I felt like saying in the chat, "You SHOULD be worried" lol
No problem, and I'm glad that I could help you with this, John.
In fact, I read this annotation. And, this was, unbelievably, good for your first time, John.
In addition
Forgot to add this, but you're right, John. The reason I haven't been on the computer that much and have been far less active then usual this past week is that I've been extremely busy. And, by that, I mean much more then usual. I'm always a busy man, but things have really exploded (have been beyond hectic) which made it so that I didn't have that much. Now, things are starting to settle down, and it's going back to the normal back business that you normally expect.

New annotation
Most appropriate, given Joe got me into annotations, to annotate a game against Joe! Oh remember one and all, Annotation Alley is open to everyone!
Yes, I commented in there like crazy letting you know why I did things, and in a way, comparing it to how GM's do this, and where it's easy to go wrong. And, then there's more which you'll find in the annotation.

Great comments Joe and I've left a handful in reply. It'd be great to get others' perspective as well. Actually you've hit upon a couple of things that I wish to discuss with all of Tipsy's Place so I'll further the discussions in a separate thread maybe some time this weekend. I'm really going to let fly on the entire concept of so called "good and bad bishops", when I encountered that nonsense in Euwe's Middle Game text I felt like drop-punting the book across the room. Not Euwe's fault, he didn't invent the terms but whoever did is going to get a hiding even if I need to design a TARDIS to do it!
Now, that you mention it, I decided to show that annotation to my friend, archduke_piccolo, so you should be getting more comments, soon.
BTW, if you check in the jkarp, yes I've annotated another game. But, I'll say it here though, as there are normally two games. I must say that, as usual, we played a second game, afterwards, which is, believe it or the point. The idea is that you want to have two games, very similar to a match, but one right after so that you're one color, and on the next game, you play the opposite color. I had a win, but made a mistake in the endgame which resulted in a draw. But, the thing is that like Friday, as with most two games, only one will usually get annotated because in the other, it's not set on the right colors. In other words, it's reversed so that black starts on the first and second rank, whereat, white starts on the seventh and eighth rank. It's the opposite of what we're used to, yet, still playable. But, it doesn't work for an annotation as too many things get mixed up. In order to be annotated and keep, it has to start the way we're used to. That's how it's generally done.

speaking of 2 games
You up for another Sicilian, Tipsy as Black?
Not right now, but when I finish one more game, I will be.
Now that I think of it, after I finish a game, I am planning to become avaliable for team matches. And, after that gets finished, then I would be more then happy to play another game with you. The idea being is that I am not going to play any more then 6 simultaneous games. One of the many reasons I went wrong against, as well as, a final mistake against Julio is because, although it was 8 and not more, I was still playing a little too many simultaneous games to keep my concentration. Well, I am a very serious chess player, and don't want anything knawing away at my focus.

sound strategy
very good, I've only the 4 in progress atm though 3 of them are pearlers, very heavy on tactics and strategy. The exception is the Alekhine, well, can't wait for that game to be over, rubbish opening. Even if rmannstaedt loves it.
Ok, I'm down low enough that although I have automatic decline so that we don't get a game, I am planning to change it, just let me know, as I will be more then happy to accept your challenge, if you want a game.

Talk about annotations and games, I'm not sure if this will happen. But, sometimes, when I go away and have to fly, the plane I'm on doesn't just offer television or radio. They also have a computer with several games as an option. Chess is one of them. Often, I will pick the hardest level because that makes it almost, as difficult as, the most difficult level of Wizzard Chess. Now, if I do go away, have to fly, and chess is an option, I will bring a notebook notate the game. Then, I will annotate just like with what happens with Jack. It's not definite, but a potential does exist. I won't know until I'm on vacation and a plan that does offer it, since there's only one airline that I know does this. And, if it should happen, it wouldn't be, until February.

funny you should mention that...
No such thing on Australian domestic flights and anyway driving round this wide brown land, though costly, I find more pleasurable than airlines unless time is of the essence or the journey is over say 1000 km (roughly 500 miles). But, yes I did notice on United/Lufthansa international flights a chess program. One could slide the difficulty to approximate Elo ratings; I took 1400 as I figured the effects of flight, booze, in-flight meals (bleh) and effectively playing OTB would drop my ability. I'm happy to say undefeated...once I learned how to use the "take-back" button to compensate for turbulence-induced finger slips! But the nature of the games were most interesting, the computer definitely underestimated the value of a pawn chain as both black and white allowing some impressive rolling pawn victories. Normally here on GK an opponent will do their best to stymie one from getting their pawn on, indeed one could argue most opening theory is dedicated (especially as Black) to that end. Would have made a couple of good annotations but with my notepad and pen way up in the overhead department, I only considered the value of recording the games too late! Play your opponent at lower levels, Joe, I do think you obsess too much about what masters are doing. Settle on the basics first. If you can't beat the chess program at 1400 then no point playing it at 2000!!!

Interestingly enough, the idea of playing against the computer dates back to before I learned about chess websites, where you play against people. This is the first site I learned about, and only recently, were other sites. But, before that, my friend, who I'd be more then happy to coach or mentor, introduced me to Wizzard Chess which is a computer game. The whole idea started with the first Harry Potter book where Ron trains the other two how to play chess. And, in this computer excercise, you learn a lot. The problem was that many levels got too easy, until, I, finally, picked the hardest level. Having lost many and not playing too well, even though I lost here, it was best game for the hardest level of this program. gameknot.com In fact, it's so special that I posted in the WTW annotation thread because, it was, as though, I was up against a runner, due to the level of difficulty. And, it's important to note that this game happened when was considered to have left this website, temporarly. So, before knowing about websites, even though I'm here more often, this is when the computer game was played.
Talk about this thread and annotation alley, there is a WTW game that started on this website, so with the time restrictions, when it's finished, I will skip a week annotating my games against Mr. Stockel. Instead, it will be that WTW game. But, I will still record the PGN format and post it in the WTW games completed thread so that, at some point, it does get annotated. Again, we're not near it, yet, but we will cross that bridge when we get there. And, I'll let you know when I arrive at that juncture.

The Man Who Broke the Bat!
Batman really plays a game that turns into Pac-man! Enjoy! (And remember, this annotation was made in situ; I annotated as I was playing the game live!) gameknot.com

When time allows, I will comment on that annotation. Meanwhile, I was able to finish the annotation I told you about, earlier then anticipated. gameknot.com And, as you might guess it was presented at WTWLTR club, as well, since I was up against a runner.
@tipsyjourneyman:
Ok, I have commented on your annotation. Usually, I don't ask for this, but I was wondering, if you would be able to comment on my latest annotation against the runner, Jack Stockel. That is because, as noted in the end of the game, Tom said that I shouldn't notate the game by advising me not to, "write things down" and Jack agreed by nodding his head. The reason why is that you are one of the main people who encouraged me to start annotating OTB games, and I'm glad that you did as not only is it good for learning and improvement, but, in doing so, this is also beneficial for the WTWLTR since the idea is annotating these kinds of games so that people learn.

no problems
Happy to Joe! I've been on vac for a while, decided to celebrate my bday over 5 days, so had fallen behind chesswise but all caught up, I'll definitely have a gander at your latest game against Jack which will lead to comments aplenty no doubt and hopefully even catch up on the jkarp campaign as well! No promises on the latter but definitely promise the former!

as promised
left some comments on your latest against Jack. I can see why you asked for me to look at the game specifically and I'm glad you did. And thanks for your comments on mine. Between reading through that annotations and the comments left, an annotation of our game again and your game and leaving comments, add to that some Guiness and scotch....and that's my evening. And an evening well spent! Good night!
Thanks John. Yes, I enjoyed annotating that game, and you did a good job annotating the game that you showed. Yes, we do, to a big extent, think alike in terms of the games and annotations.
Talk about annotations, remember how I was able to annotate my game against Jack Stockel, earlier then I originally thought? Well the reason I wanted to do this, ASAP was so that I could do a second annotation, this week. The idea being that reversion has asked me to annotate a game from a top 100 GK player where black plays a dubious but is able to win, due to his positional. Now, reversion did show me a different game, but this would've taken too long, although I am planning to do it when the place that holds chess is closed for holidays, so on Veterans Day or Thanksgiving. But, I remember TA's Q sacs. Now, he is often white, but this time, he was black, so I decided to make one of those annotations be based on that game. gameknot.com
