Advanced out of book analysis techniques/secrets
First,a bit about "in book" studies:

This thread can be discussed between any rating levels, however,it is not designed or recommended for those who actually need to learn and analyze "in book"moves in their initial plateau studies. And even "in book studies"come later on...perhaps above 1500 in rating. Some of the best in book lines that have already been established in many book sources also need to be looked at very VERY slowly, crosschecked, played with in live games and experimented with(live or against your chess program) to see which variations give you the best winning or even drawing results. The problem with many players both OTB and Corresp(like GK)is the lack of patience and willpower to actually sit down, study, rip apart books(either DVD's or paperback),do online research with other games played using some of the "in book"moves, trial and errors, closed vs open styles of play to get into your best comfort zone and a host of other avenues of thought.

This all takes time, energy and massive effort!Too many players want fast results to improve and want it now! No,unless you are the next Fischer or Carlsen, that will not happen. So studying and honing your in book studies can take years,so be patient and take the time to investigate, research, experiment and play.Perhaps your job and family gives you little time to do this.Understandable.But moving up the rating ladder does require extra time and energy/willpower.Find the time somewhere.Maybe a few hours on a Sunday afternoon?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now,on to "out of book"analysis techniques/secrets of the advanced players:

Again, from this point on,unless you are approx above 1800 in rating or higher,I would not suggest you use some of these techniques I mention, but I suppose curiosity is ok on any levels.

Advanced players already understand that having the best up to date opening books is a critical key to analysis techniques with "in book studies".But moving "OUT OF BOOK" doubles the necessity for deeper analysis COMBINED with a superior chess program as your study buddy.Without your study buddy(the program)it would be the equivalent of going to a 5 star restaurant, ordering spaghetti and meatballs with extra sauce and then attempting to eat the spaghetti with no fork, spoon or any other utensil, just your bare hands and dog like head dipping down into the plate! The management will throw you out of the restaurant just like your opponents will throw you out of the game with probable wins against you!Kapish?

Ok.I will add to this thread in time, but lets move on to some specific techniques and secrets of the masters and beyond.

First, understand that some books are better than others and have a higher ELO rating. There is a general confusion with "books".Any book can be an outlet for opening research, whether it be a specific book on a Berlin Defense or Trompowsky, but for advanced players, many of these paperback or DVD books are UNNECESSARY.Why?Because a truly good opening reference book(like Hiarcs,Houdini and a number of others)already contain everything you need all wrapped up in one nice Christmas package with the analysis ALREADY DONE FOR YOU with stats, subvariant lines and more! Then, when you COMBINE a good program(like Stockfish,Komodo,Rybka,Fritz15 and other programs),the program itself can identify the opening by name and then list the variation being played to that point in the game by the proper label. The program will, for example, state that move 4 is a Ruy Lopez opening(before any transposition),and later on by move 6,state that it is now in the Arkangel variation. Then in the Arkangel tree, deeper subvariant eddies and currents of study can be extrapolated and studied for plus and minus midgame to endgame advantages, unclear result factorials and more.

This requires a good program to study the pawn value factors vs the move input.
Note this,specifically.

Now advanced players, senior masters and GM's are always seeking some some kind of key move that is different somewhere in the game that may surprise their opponent who has memorized the opening moves in some of the best opening books(like Hiarcs).Even if the "different move"has a small bit of disadvantage,as long as that disadvantage is very small,it will usually NOT cause the user to lose the game IF they have already studied the key response branched moves that would occur from opponent responses. The "different out of book"move can in turn, throw the other book using player(your opponent)into a state of confusion, since it was unexpected and not in the mainline of their past book studies relative to the best statistical opening moves listed in Hiarcs or Houdini. Many games have been WON using these out of book techniques as opposed to staying "in book" to move 30-40 which many times yield a higher draw stat result because both book users are only using the top tourney premium opening book moves within that book.Kapish so far?

So,by using your study buddy(Fritz 15 for example)alongside a good opening Reference book(like Hiarcs,Shredder, ect)this will TELL YOU the pawn value assessment of a FORCED MOVE you manually placed into the chessboard and give the value of that immediate position! It will immediately tell you if that move IS OUT OF BOOK and if that specific move has a 0.00= analysis,a -0.07 value a +0.14 assessment configuration or other value. The analyzer(you) can then initiate a series of moves manually placed into the program that can polish up that -0.40 positional move to a -0.05 or possibly a 0.00 pawn value assessment for basic equality. The equality can immediately turn into a large +.90 value or higher IF you surprise your opponent when he makes an unstudied move in the game that you have already analyzed ahead of time in your database pregame study as a negative % outcome in that branched tree response.

So,as you can already surmise, just using some paperback book on a Ruy Lopez opening Defense like a Berlin,is not nearly enough of a sharpened tool to compete against the best of the best in the rating arena!

Lets use one or two examples here. Not necessarily the best examples, but I took the following opening book moves from real games I played OTB at the Marshall last year.

I'm not going to show the entire game with PGN(because pasting the entire game violates and breaches my personal success using the out of book moves that I may use in the future games against GK corresp players),but I will give you an idea of how these things work from a few EARLY MOVES.And by the way,I won this game against a 2600 rated player at the Marshall in NYC.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Trompowsky out of book analysis:

The Tromp, usually moves out of book early enough to begin with. But some books do run deep, like Hiarcs, and in the case of a Tromp.,it can subvariate to move 25 or so.A Ruy Lopez can run as deep as 45-50 moves!

So,I love the Tromp due to this opening having an abundance of out of book deeper tree possibility experimental moves that can still yield = or + value results against unwary opponents!

So lets combine my up to date Hiarcs with Komodo..... what I used 3 months PRIOR to my game against this 2600 rated player in an OTB game. The same can be applied to a correspondence game on GK!Keep that in mind!

Using Hiarcs on the top stat narrow parameter level with a Tromp style game in mind the following moves start the game off:

I'm playing the white side:

1.d4,Nf6
2.Bg5,d5
3.e3,h6
4.Bf4,e6

Now,at this game position,Hiarcs recommends only two possible continuations for "best"in book stat response:

Either 5.Bd3 or 5.Nf3!

Both of these moves have had the highest stat win results over time as already compiled in the Hiarcs opening book study.

5.Bd3 has a analysis study of 3 games with ave opponent and performance levels of 2975 and 3033.

5.Nf3 has an analysis study of 177 games played with ave opponent and performance levels of 2858 and 2821 respectively.

Note that the rating levels are not necessarily human game play, but may involve computer vs computer games as well.

Both are the best of the best next moves to make, this is unquestionable.

But now comes MY MONKEY WRENCH!!!!

Instead of either 5.Bd3 or 5.Nf3 I moved:

5.a3

Position:

This move sends the game immediately OUT OF BOOK according to Hiarcs! Now,statistically in deeper avenues,it is not wise to move out of book too early. However, due to the fact that a Trompowsky moves out of book sooner than other openings anyway, then it is a bit safer to move out of book earlier than other much deeper analyzed games, like a Ruy or QGD.

Now,when you combine the Komodo using infinite analysis.... my move 5.a3 illustrates after one hour of deep ply depth study to over depth 32,only an =(-0.06)difference out of book change in pawn value assessment. If I followed the book lines to completion(like to move 22),the values flux between approx the same value or a bit higher or lower depending upon the subvariational lines inputted after the game moves out of book from that later point.

But,moving 5.a3 has both theoretical and psychological value against any number of opponents that have studied a Tromp or any other opening for that matter. They may not be prepared to understand the next best series of moves they themselves have not studied as alternative out of book moves over the months or years.Beginning to see the light now?

Again... 5.a3 was not the best statistical move, since it was not used in any higher avenues of tournament play in a good opening database, but this early surprise move has other secret values that many senior masters seek out to use against other known book users OTB AS WELL AS CORRESPONDENCE PLAY on GK or other chess sites.GM's will be much more careful to play surprise moves like this (5.a3),opting to move out of book later, perhaps move 21 or so,but that is because they are involved in ultra serious world watching board play and will take much less risks that a corresp master or senior master in both OTB and corresp play.

So in order to do the proper research and use the proper tools, you MUST have the best up to date opening books(like Hiarcs,Houdini and others)and combine that research analysis study with the best computer programs on the market. An inferior opening book(like GK's)combined with some old dusty Shredder program will not give accurate out of book positional pawn % value assessments necessary for that tree study out of book surprise game move against your opponents!

More on this in time!

Again, these advanced analysis ideas are not for players even under 2000 in rating(most of the time),but then,I cannot simply filter out my posts to align with all player level ratings in this club.As you improve over the years, however, this post may come in handy.
