I smoked a small bit in the late 1960's,including cigarettes and cigars. However, back in those days....cigarettes were only 32-35 cents a pack!Cigars were about 10 cents.I remembered putting 35 cents in a cigarette machine back in 1968 or so and the cigarettes were 32 cents, but the machine DID NOT give penny change, but I got my change anyway! How?Three pennies in change were actually placed on the cigarette pack between the clear cellophane and the pack,by hand!

Of course, everything was cheaper back then.A triple dip of ice cream was 30 cents and a candy bar was 5 cents.Kites were 15 cents and the string was 30 cents.Tasty cakes were 12-13 cents and soda was 25 cents for a quart and 6 to 8 cents for that pint size,or whatever that smaller size was.A bread loaf was 23 cents.Comic books were expensive....75 cents! And telephone booths were 5 cents to call until about 1967 when it went up to 10 cents.Postage stamps,I can remember being 5 cents, then 6 cents,8 cents then going higher and higher.Cereal boxes had metal toys in them at times, just like Cracker Jacks.
And my local movie theater has a double flick for 1 dollar! If you were retired, you could get in for 75 cents!

I watched the first Moon landing live,Apollo 11 in 1969 on my black and white TV live.Only had 3 channels back then....3,6 and 10.Some people placed a plastic color screen in front of their black and white TV to make it appear as color. The screen has shades of red, blue and green. And back during the 60's everyone has those aluminum Christmas tree's with a revolving color wheel.

No computers,no cell phones, not even cordless phones till the early 70's.

But those were the best of times for me.I call it the golden age.

And even with "duck and cover"drills at school where the teacher made us duck under our school desks or go downstairs to the bomb shelter....never telling us,this might be for real one day if the Soviet Union sent nuclear missiles to the USA,during that so called cold war back then.

Yes,the 1960's were the best.Simple, uncomplicated(for the kids anyway).Vietnam, had to later sign up for the draft, but never got called. And living in a real haunted house was an experience I try to forget.

I smoked for 13 years 2+ packs a day, I quit 33 years ago. It can be tough at first but hang in there it does get better. Definitely worth it even if your chess game suffers a little.

smoking
I used to smoke . I know how hard it can be to get through that difficult addiction. Because I have heart trouble as well, it was imperative that I quit. I am glad you are making the effort. Once you get through it, you will, I believe sense the reward of the effort you made. I grew up at a time when movie stars were wittingly or unwittingly glamorizing smoking as an adult rite of passage. You don't even necessarily realize how that plays on you. I can remember walking past the teachers lounge in Jr. High or in High School , having the door open and watching billows of smoke come out. Didn't think much about it at the time. Good for you . I encourage
you to keep it up.

Funny how some teachers are addicted.Back in 7th grade,my History teacher gave out passing grades to many students that handed him a pack of Marlboro Cigarettes, even though they would have failed the test and did not study one bit. Many would not believe that story, but it is true. And I was one of the students that had no time to study that week and would have failed a specific history test that week. So,at lunch time and before the test,I went to the corner store and bought a pack of smokes.Back in those days all you had to say is that your father wanted the smokes, not me and the store owner gave it too me.I remembered the History teacher telling me that I would not receive more than a "C"because it was a soft pack and he wanted a hard pack!He added ...."make sure you appear to have answered the questions,do not leave any blanks"!

Absolutely true!

The same teacher told the students that he allowed cheating, but do not let him catch you! Then you had two choices.Go to the office with your parents being called in or take that butt beating with the big wooden paddle(two or three smacks!)and he was a big guy with full swings!
