Hi Jeremy,
If you are persistent and keep trying you will get that 2100 or 2200 player to accept. If not,it will take just a bit longer.Adjust to 1900 and i'm sure the 2100 will roll in.As to playing against me,fine, but not until you are a bit higher.I'm trying to get where I was only a few months ago:

game

Yes,that is me before I quit GK and i'm returning again. So am fighting the rating war right now and a draw against you will be a -.But in the future,i'm sure we can get something together.

I was at the Las Vegas International Chess Festival in June. Were you there?

No the US Open is the main big one I pay to go to. Other than that I stick to mostly midwestern events. I travel for work frequently but try to stay up to date on those events, and my boss is lenient for those

There's always next year
I didn't know there was the International Chess Festival in Las Vegas. I will have to google that to check it out. I think club members might want to also google the USCF. I would point out "PAY to go to and you can win money.

Hello from bud_powell
Greetings to all.
Hi, everyone. I'm Julian.
I've been on Gameknot for awhile now but only just now got around to clicking on the Clubs feature. I'm generally not a group-joining kind of guy, but like a lot of features on GK, I like that there are options to delve into some deeper chess insights here and there. In every discipline, it can only help to learn from people who are more knowledgeable.
I was something of a casual chess player for a long time. I played since I was a kid, but never seriously or competitively. Really I just enjoyed the game and admired the aesthetic for a lot of reasons. I am a craft-oriented person, though, and generally am of the opinion that whatever is worth doing is worth doing well and in recent years I've tried to develop and improve my game in skill, seriousness, and understanding.
I'm emotional, impulsive and somewhat impatient as a person but I have some inclination (developed through education and some self-training) to thinking analytically. This describes my game style. I always used to play reactively rather than thinking with foresight and I still suffer from making fast careless moves.
I like how the game at a high level, although often reduced to computerized patterns, can represent the characteristics and personalities of the individual player. I have recently been focusing on queen's pawn openings (queen's gambit in particular, and slav defense) as opening studies. I've acquired a few books but haven't been focused enough to work out all the studies thoroughly. Instead I just play on GK a lot and see how it goes. I try tactics and I try to learn by doing. Eventually though I'm going to have to do the work. That's maybe where this club can help.
I hope to learn more and find some angles into developing the discipline to improve my game. My activity and rating on GK tend to fluctuate (I'm rarely higher than 1600, never lower than 1400) but perhaps in time I'll be able to offer my own insights as well. For now, I'd like to read the boards, hopefully I'll be able to ask some good questions in the future, and I'd like to see where the conversations go.
Otherwise, about myself, I'm a curious and creative-minded guy currently living in Chicago. I'm a musician and composer, and I also enjoy literature, art, philosophy, boxing, and a few other things.
Looking forward to continuing the journey...

Welcome Julian!
Please take the time to look at some of the posts and/or feel free to start your own post.In time,if you have any questions, just ask me or some of the other club members.During the summer months and part of the fall I may be a bit slow in responding,so be patient. The club is growing slowly, but I suspect that by the end of the year,we will have a big bunch of members.
I am not here to "instruct"on a personal basis, except to advise on occasion about some move you have a question on,an opening, strategies and a few other things. So my "instruction"is kind of "in the posts and threads" which represent self help in theory and other chess knowledge you may not have considered.I have helped many players over the years, and hopefully this club will be able to make you a stronger player in time.Good luck!

Welcome new club member bud_powell
Hi Julian,
We are very fortunate to have this club. As TA says He is here to provide us with information and not personal training. The club members like myself can become friends and possibly play training games together unrated. In this way there is no concerns in our rating's. I also will accept rated club games and play for blood. Choice is yours. I read your post earlier and wanted the Club founder to first welcome you to the club. Hope to play you someday.
Ron yea Ron is my real name, It's short for ??.

Oh Ron,
Not right now,but eventually I will start a club game with all you guys against me(unrated).Last time it was a Basman defense(I played the black). But I had closed the club(unfortunately at that time)and the game was never finished. But we will do it again sometime,to make up for last time.I will help with some of the annotation after the game is finished(but not before)although you guys can chat all you want during the game. So,it may be another Basman,Sodium Attack or other irregular, not sure yet.I prefer an irregular, since in "theory"you guys will have an edge on me if I either open or defend with something weaker than normal. So keep an eye out for that in a few months.

Thanks for the welcome
Just from a quick perusing, there are some excellent resources in the discussion archive. In time, I may try to reactivate some of those topics. A small group is ok- I appreciate your expertise as resources as well. No worries, I am not looking for personal training per se. As in all things I do, I usually do best by learning my own way. Still, there's a wealth of information here. Much to delve into.

Hi Julian
Even though I do not consider myself a personal instructor,I am kind of a help "guide".Indirectly and directly from my general input and researched posts, including some of my games posted and a few questioned answered from time to time,it does appear to improve many players strength of play over the years. So,I gather what I know, enhance it with my own thoughts,GM's input researched and copied, charts, graphs and mix it all up with some of my gallows humor and it comes out a pretty good cake!See you and others in the club!

@bud_powell
For example, it has helped me over the years. For a long while, I had a GK rating of below 1000. Now, there are many reasons that I improved, but one of the main reasons is because of what I learned from tactical-abyss. I remember things like the Q sac and other situations where you're lost, yet, managing to get that swindle. There were other things, and I have gotten a better insight on theory and the role they play. And, there are some games where I was able to use that theory and apply to my games, or use them for annotations that I've copied and pasted, and some of my own.

Edmund...
Welcome Edmund.Glad to see your back and glad to be back.In time,I will be adding new threads in the theory dept and other things. But please feel free to add anything yourself if you like. This is your club too,so indulge yourself.Again, many of the threads on theory can get complicated and i'll do my best to answer your question.Consider many of the higher salients points in some of my posts like an advanced book on Algebra or a Psychology book. Now,considering that you did not study these things in the past very much(just hypothetically speaking),its still good to go through many or all of the threads over the months and years because it can leave an "imprint"in your mind that suddenly one day,may all come together like a lightning bolt! But at your rating,Edmund, you are already doing pretty good, above average to many, trust me,so many of the deeper facts in the posts will begin to unravel for you,i'm sure.

Most of my more involved threads or responses to you guys will be on the weekends when I have more time. So,if i'm not getting back to you right away,be patient.Sometimes I see a question or would like to interject a comment but due to travel and other things going on in my life, there may be a delay till Sat,Sun or possibly up to a week.

Good luck in the club!

TA

Hi Guys,
Right now,i'm in the heavy concentration mode(while toggling travel through S. Florida) destroying a few of my ongoing GK 2200-2300+players along the way on my laptop in the hotel room.I have a few wins coming up,its just that my opponents do not know it yet!Its zapping me a bit relative to having enough free time to post more detailed threads and other help. Its what I must go through to reach my rating goal again. So bear with me for a while, especially during the warmer weather.Perhaps the weekends will bring more input from me.In the meantime, please feel free to do as you please in the club.

Now where did I put that mojito?

Later,
TA

I understand where you're coming from, Joe. Right now, I have a similar situation because I'm going away, starting on Friday for the weekend. But, with my schedule and packing, I will also be AFK tomorrow. So, after tonight, I do not log back on, until Sunday and maybe even on Monday.

Introduction
Hello,

My name is Dan. I have been playing chess sense I was 5 or 6. So for a total of 17 years off and on. I have always loved the game and had an immense respect for its seemingly infinite possibilities. The game transcends math, mans greatest discover(Subjective). The main reason I joined was the title of the team and its stated mission. Although I have played on and off my whole life I have never studied the game. This has resulted in my playing style being quite intelligent but rather uneducated. Now that I have ambitions of competing I have started diving into the immensity that is chess theory. However books and You-Tube can only get you so far. I figured that this club could help shed light on moves/ games of mine that do not fallow main lines or rapidly divert from book. It would be outstanding if the club could help point me in the right direction on must know openings and defenses books/videos that go along with those. I do apologize for the long winded introduction.

Thank You All

Dan

Dan,
Hello Dan and welcome!

This club already has a good # of book suggestions and various posts to get you started.Shamash is the best book guy in my club and I can help direct you in time, after I check out some of your games(eventually).First check out(on page 5 of the club forums)..."How to get better at chess,a guide for all levels".And see where you stand when you check your rating level against that list. You may also want to check out(on page 4)..."The book reading suggestion thread".Both Shamash and myself have a large number of choices. They may not be custom tailored for your needs, but then,no one knows your needs yet!

See you in the club!I'm a bit busy(as the founder)right now and I travel much in the warmer weather, but in a few weeks I will be returning home and have more time to check things out for you.In the meantime, please check a good number of the posts out and I will be glad to answer your questions in time.Good luck!

thank u for accepting me as a member of your club. My name is Morgan and i live in Canberra the capital of Australia. I am 85 years old and have been playing chess sine i was about 12 years old at various levels of intensity and ability. i taught myself to play andunderstand chess notation in my early teens, then spent the next couple of years studying books and articles {mein system by nimzo, the ideas behind the openings by Reuben Fine mainly],still to me the two most meaningful books i have ever read. i returned to playing a few months ago after many years absence, with mixed success but much enjoyment. I have skimmed many of your posts and will be studying some in more detail, cheers, Morgan [nambam]
