Will be gone an extended period for surgery. I been working with a torn rotator cuff for the past 8 weeks, and now the pain has gotten substantially worse. Surgery is planned but not yet scheduled. Just letting you guys know in advance that my activity is going to drop off significantly once surgery is scheduled.

About 15 years ago,I had major rotor cup repair.I say major, because, unlike some rotor cup tears, mine was ALL 4 connecting tissues, not 1,2 or 3 tissue repairs.I fell flat on my side and shoulder on a wet floor at a manufacturing facility I worked at.My surgeon said..."it was the worse case he ever had to deal with".Shards of ripped tissue everywhere.Back then, the technology was not as good as today.I have a big scar on the top of my shoulder where whey went in.Many times today, they are able to make a small incision through your back shoulder area and use more microsurgery.

And my old fashioned surgeon kept me in a sling for over a month.Big mistake.I ended up with a "frozen shoulder" and had to have months of therapy just to break it loose from a sling position, without the sling!Today,I still can't quite raise my left arm completely straight up over my head.

Nowdays, they usually have you moving the shoulder in physical therapy the very next day(or same day),not weeks or months later like years ago.

I had abdominal surgery just a few weeks ago- came down with sharp pains very suddenly, they did some tests and found my gallbladder needed to come out. It was a routine operation, I should be back to 100% eventually, and I have no dietary or other restrictions. Still, it hit me hard psychologically because I'd never been sick or hurt, never broke a bone, never been in the hospital before. I am probably overly reliant on my physicality and have a hard time facing vulnerability, so to literally overnight go from planning to hit the gym to being unable to move was jarring. Nevertheless, I'm finding that medical issues can and do happen to everyone, and hard as it can sometimes be, you have to put your health first and be patient. Best of luck with the recovery. Fortunately, neither a rotator cuff nor a cholecystectomy need restrict your chess play (unlike, say, boxing. I won't get back to the gloves for another month, alas)

Hello Mike,
Welcome Mike and hope the club helps you out in the coming months.Set some kind of goal, like having a 1000 rating or more, check out some of the posts like..."how to get better at chess,a guide for all levels"and see what you may or may not have studied or touched on relative to your rating.I'm sure this club can raise those numbers of yours in time!

See you in the club,
Joe

blitz blunders
According to Shredder my rating is over 1000.

Whenever I do blitz games on here I get timeouts. I don't know why...otherwise I'd be able to increase my game ratio.

Mike,I won't discuss in any detail about blitz and other things in this intro thread, but glad to in another post/thread...maybe one labeled for blitz. There is one or two in this club. But I will say that if your timing out in blitz, then play longer time control levels with as much incremental time as possible.10 min with 60 sec increment, should be plenty to not time-out.However,I would actually suggest that you simply stay a bit clear of the blitz rooms and concentrate on building your corresp game strength up first.Blitz can erode your actual corresp game play in many ways, and it is most often suggested that players under 1300 rated concentrate on other avenues initially.Take a look at the post..."blitz plus's and minus's",page 3 of the club posts.I play blitz all the time, but my case is vastly different than yours.I notice already that your average move time is minutes, not hours or days.Does that correlate to your blitz play?Maybe yes, maybe no,but I would still suggest concentrating on other avenues and play blitz only very minutely for now.

Again,see ya in the club!

My advice is for you to believe in yourself. Don't play too fast or too many games at one time. When some of my games clear out, I'd be more then happy to coach or mentor you, as I have experience with this, pagmatic68. I know what it takes, and I see untapped potential in you, just as I do with others.

That's some good advice. I'm so used to playing on the clock at the chess club. That's all we do there. Implementing that concept here has cost me a lot of games. Thanks for pointing that out

Me to. Believe it or not, I have recommended this club to several members of this website. I am glad that some have joined. Everything you can get for this club is good for learning. I remember how much there was that nowadays. In fact it was so much, that I have annotated four games from tactical-abyss.

Hello all. I have already studied a couple of the threads and I'm impressed by the amount of care and work that's gone into them. For that, many thanks!

I'm an intermediate player. I learned quite a lot from playing computer chess (Chess Master 9 or some such - can't remember the exact title), but I've found it's much more interesting to play human opponents, even ones I have never met. I have a late mid-game problem. Quite often I do well - and the computer analysis later shows nice fat green stripes next to my moves, so I'm not just imagining it - and then I somehow throw the game away without being sure how I achieved it. That's the most immediate reason why I'm here.

Look forward to learning from all of you!

Hey All!
Hey there all! Remember me? I've been a bit too quiet lately due to being so busy, but I want to change that. I'm glad that I have been accepted into this great club!

Despite being a busy captain, my chess has improved within the past few months, but I know I can get even better, thus I will try to learn even more about chess to improve what I already know!

It's nice to see you all. I plan to enjoy the experience!

Welcome ragnarhairybreek,joveyboy1,penguin_ and others.Did I miss anyone?I look forward in helping you guys out with your game improvements in the coming months or years.Right now,I cannot do so very much if at all,due to a death in the family and many other things going on in a personal level.Time consuming and my brain is like jello right now. So,I probably won't be very active in the club till sometime in 2016.In the meantime feel free to check out all of the great posts/threads and there are others in the club to help you guys out.Hope you enjoy the club. Many of the threads can get a bit complex in theory and much is covered, but do the best you can for now.Hopefully, sometime in 2016(if not earlier) I can begin to either simplify or add to the threads to clarify any questions you may have about any of the posts.

Again,I welcome you all to what I think is the best club on GK when it comes to theory and improving your games in ways the other clubs do not touch on much.
