Greetings!
Good evening, Thanks for letting me join! I'm Sarah and I'm a 14 year old junior in high school (yes, I skipped several years due to boredom and moving between the US and the UK and back again). I learned to play chess from nurses while I had a long stay in the hospital when I was 8 and I've been playing since sporadically and am looking to get better. LOL, no one plays well at my current school. I know basic openings and can usually spot what someone else is up to and can counter it, but I play a bit too aggressively and am weak at the end game. I'm good at the psychological game in person, but that's useless here online. I'm chatty, friendly, and hyper - so don't mind me if I prattle.

Welcome to the club Sarah. I'm sure you'll find lots of things to help you improve Jeremy

Thanks for the welcome guys! I'm looking forward to improving! Heh... already learned a few things and am currently working on different opening styles. I'm pretty stagnant in my opening at the time and tend to go with my usual until something the other guy does demands I do different.

I can see you becoming a better player. The reason being is that your rating is already over 1200. Now, I didn't even start liking or playing the game, until I was two years older then you. It came after a nasty experience, as a teen, when I played, not knowing anything about the game or the rule. And, then they said, after winning (of course) "There. I was only being nice to you because you don't know the game". Although that seemed nice, I was being teased, so I gave up, for three years. But, to make a long story short, it helped me at High School, in College, and at work. So, I love the game, and over the years, I have become good enough to coach and mentor players, to give them the encouragement that I wish I once had. In fact, I have become well known for doing that and still continue, today. Although I couldn't teach you (due to our ratings being close), one reason I've become, as good as, I am today is because of the founder of this club and what I've learned from tactical-abyss. So, yes, there is a lot to get out of here, and I am sure that it is going to help you.

Inroduction
Hi everyone, thank you Joe for accepting me as a member of this club. For many years I just played against the computer. Then I became interested in some of the chess theory in books and joined a correspondence site. I joined GK last year after a couple of years away from the game and sadly my. rating had dropped from 1200 to an awful low of about 750. Beginning to pick. up points over the last six months though. Chess theory really fascinates me and I hope this club will help me improve my game. At the moment I have just started being mentored by JKarp again.

Believe it or Not
Your story is similar to mine, Sue. But, for me, the computer involved a program called Wizzard Chess which I found helpful. Then, we were at OTB Chess Club, and an assistant of Jack Stockel (who used to be there) said that the was on this website. When I heard that, I joined because I was looking for one where you play against real people. Shortly then after, my rating had dropped down to 851 (which was the lowest). While on there, aside from Jack, I only had one coach. But, the problem is that I did not like the way he coached me as he said that a certain move was wrong because of one thing without really going to into details. So, there was not much optimisim. That was, until I met a mentor, and my goal was becoming good enough so that I could coach and mentor players. In it, this would mean giving them encouragement and optimisim that I wish, I once had. BTW, I am currently training several players on this website, and have been working with one for a while at OTB chess. And, in doing so, there is a trainee who has become good enough to defeat without help which did accomplish my goal because she had improved. It did require a lot of thinking and was difficult for her to defeat me, but she really thought about it and wound up doing so. She and I are proud of her improvement, and that game is going to be annotated later on this week. Meanwhile, you have improved, Sue, and there is a lot to learn from this club. That's why, after I closed my club down, I decided to merge whatever was left over of it, and combine with this club.

Welcome to the club Sue.I'm sure the club members, myself and some of the posts/threads here will be able to help improve your game strength in time.Patience and experimenting with things you may at first feel uncomfortable with may be the key.Endgame study on the lighter side to begin with may help.I also noticed after clicking on a large # of your white games that you seem to always open with 1.e4.You may want to get into that "uncomfortable zone" and experiment with an occasional 1.d4 game once in a while, maybe even unrated.See you in the club. TA Joe

Thanks TA, I have Silmans Complete Endgame Course in my bookcase I haven't looked at it for ages, I will take a look at it soon. You have probably also noticed that my white games whenever possible have been the four knights variation but I intend to start playing The Ruy Lopez. I have heard that a grandmaster said that chess is 99 percent tactics is that correct do you think?

Sue,when you have time, take a look on page 6 of the club and read the thread and links provided under "positional vs tactical study/play."I do not want to start a lengthy conversation on this subject in this intro post.Do not forget to also click on the additional 2 or 3 links in that thread. The thread in gereral may not concentrate on your direct question about %,but offer much more additional info.I have added another post in that thread to more closely answer your question regarding the 99% issue.

Oh Sue,that "page 6"may change on the post,so just search it out as it changes position in the club list.It can be found at the top of the list now, since I made a comment, but then,of course,it moves to different club pages.I have to search out my own posts quite often!

Eesther
Hi, I'm Eesther, have been played on many different Correspondence Chess sites (and a lot of blitz), without an engine, though. My highest priority is continu learning and so I'm growing better constantly, even if my results and play doesn't resemble that instantly. Since almost two years I've been studying each and every CEWN-newsletter which is so much above my level that it's still very educational to me - After all, my OTB rating is After only 30 games played still around 1800, while my playing strength in many areas of the game is 1900-2000 or even above as I have learned from so many books and other sources that I can outperform them pretty easily; something which is steen as just impossible. But after all, they are only 2100, hey, or only 2200-2300 which means they make a lot of mistakes, which is very couraging! My trainers at CEWN are 2700, so using that they should be scared of little me! Anyway, I have been playing a lot of openings, preferably all, both regular and irregular. Just because the profit is highest as I learn the very most from not narrowing my chess too much. I played the Caro-Cann with fine results (without even one loss); 1 d4 with Avrukh and Schandorff, 1 c4 with Marin. Now I'm playing 1 e4 and very much enjoying it! Of course I don't play that solely; I like Kramnik's 1 Nf3 repertoire and have won many fine Correspondence games with it - my reasonable strong opponents didn't know anything much about centercontrol and other such important things. 1 Nf3 is much more than blitzing out the same first moves every game! Okay, I still don't understand too much details of the best players of the world - but be it so, for the moment: I gradually increase my level of play and am sure that, if I continue to play chess, I will stand out above many others playing Chess for their whole life. Honestly, I already do, playing Chess for only five years by now (except 4 years until my 11th year). Chess.com is one Great Chess environment and gameknot is surprisingly great. I hope not only to learn a lot within this special club of learningloving players, but to share a lot of experience with many different books, openings and other resources. This for now. Time to learn and play! Eesther

Welcome eesther to the club.Hopefully, the club can assist you a bit in improving your game play.Although,if your trainers are 2700,I doubt that I can assist you much better in any way.My OTB and corresp rating hovers around 2500,although I opened a new account,so I am stating over at only 2300+,and it will take a year or two till I get back to 2500+again.My blitz rating has reached 2600-2700 however and once was 2800....established,not provisional. Right now with the holidays and other things going on,I may not be in the club much over the next few months, but usually on weekends I stop by a bit longer. But there are others that may be able to assist you if needed,in the meantime. New Member Intro
Greetings from the Sonora Desert! I've been a GameKnot member since January, '14 and a current refugee from the late, lamented Knights of Honor. I'm a retired postal worker (New Jersey) now living in Arizona. I'm an eternal 'intermediate' level player, around 1300 GK average rating. 1400's don't scare me but there are 1100's that wipe me out without breaking a sweat. Looking forward to an enjoyable club experience.

Good luck in the club! Joe(TA) Founder/moderator of this club.
