Hello Rich. Also welcome to the club.I am the founder of the club.As Joe mentioned there is much to learn from this club.I hope your knowledge of chess becomes enlightening.Being empathic,I can sense that we have much to learn from you, however.Keep in mind that any subjects are ok in this club, except politics and religion. Positional vs tactical
Positional vs tactical which paradigm is better?
|
|
There both important. But, I think positional is a little bit more. The idea being is that tactics come a little later, but you have to see the entire story that the board is telling you which means the overall picture. That requires basing things on the position because you're talking the context of the game. In fact, while tactics do play a role, I also think that theory also involves more of the position as that's what I use to come up with a lot of variations and make things complicated and complex since chess is a difficult game.

gameknot.com One is not better than the other.Depends upon the game, style, time and more.Tactical is more short term, positional has longer and deeper thought involved in its framework, but both need each other to survive. If one needs to comment more on this subject, please add it in to the link post above, rather than discuss it in the introduction thread.

I'm back and hope to gain knowledge of Chess Theory
First, I want thank TA for accepting me in the club. Secondly It feels good to be back! This is without doubt the best club on GameKnot, I'm always looking for ways to improve. Look forward to re-discovering the topics here. I will be active and share my thoughts as new topics become posted. Ron Redfoxrising

I am glad that you're back, Ron. There was one or two lessons recently. Well, one was on, I forgot what it was, but I believe it was the Baseman Defense. In the second one, we saw the full strength, and he won in 11 moves. But, there is a lot that goes into it. I enjoyed them and will, eventually, annotate those games.

Nice to see you again Ron.Let us look to the horizon to gain the insight of chess theory which all of us need to improve our games.I am always learning, but will guide many of you guys best I can over the years. This particular year I may not be able to input much into the club, but will try and return to the club as much as possible. If you notice any lengthy absences from me,I have not forgotten about the club or its members, its just that I may not even be near a computer or internet server in some areas of the world I may be travelling in.I may also simply not have the time this year. But no matter,I will return. In any absences of mine, just make yourself at home. Making myself at home
There is a wealth of information here in this club. It's like life, If you want something. You have to find a way to get it. Club size is rising and hope to see others come aboard. I'm looking for specific opening books where I can learn more and better understand my move choices in the opening I choose to use. I have used King Pawn and now using Queen Pawn. I will start a new topic on each and hope to get some feedback from the team.

I understand your need however, as iTS everything but easy to somehow cover such wilde subjects and where to seek and find? Eesther

Hi everyone I requested to join this club because I like to discuss chess theory and I have coached a few players over the years. I also try to find time to comment on annotated games. I usually avoid main lines these days because there are good but less well known alternatives.

Welcome dmaestro! Yes,I agree already with you...alternative moves to the main lines.Even some better books will illustrate those in "blue colors",like in Hiarcs.Other moves,no. Good luck in the club! TA

Hi, I'm a new member of this club.
Thanks for accepting me. I am rated about FIDE 1900 OTB and am aspiring for greater heights! I have occasional questions I would like to ask (about chess), and hopefully I can answer a few myself. This gameknot site is a pretty good one I think, though sometimes it feels like I'm playing cyborgs instead of real people.

It might be a good idea to contribute to or revive some of the other threads on this club. There are some good resources and discussions on openings, book recommendations, etc. We should take advantage of the opportunities we have in this club, and by that I mean interacting with all of you.

Hi Bud, As far as I know,99% of all of my past threads have been reestablished again from my old club to this new club.I have deleted a few comments from time to time, but the major bulk that is here now,is about equal to my past club. So,you are correct, more comments need to be involved with any of the older threads.I can only do so much.I will put the info out there for you guys, but then its up to others to initiate any questions or renewed interest so that I or others can initiate a conversation on any older threads....otherwise they just remain stale and in limbo.

I would be interested in seeing the book recommendations. Where are they?
|
|
iamwell, If you scroll the other threads, you'll find a discussion devoted to book recommendations. This topic has come up from time to time in this club, so tactical-abyss has posted a link to previous threads as well. I took the liberty of posting to the thread so it should come up as an "active" discussion. Feel free to peruse and add to it.

Hello all!
Greetings from Miami. I was a tournament CC player in the USCF (highest rating: 2066) before ulnar nerve entrapment kicked in. I am in the middle of migrating from 1. d4 to 1. e4. I specialize in the Black Lion defense, 1....d6, the Ponziani, and the c3 Sicilian.

Welcome keylimeinmiami! I was in a similar situation to you.I started out with the d4 openings, colle and more.Later in the years branched off to the e4 openings.I did this mainly to confuse and reign in superior to all of those other players in my HS chess club who played mainly the trendy e4 openings with the popular 1972 Fischer/Spassky match. That kept me in the first place position two years in a row with two big trophies.I did mostly the opposite of what Fischer played and others disliked it....good! In any case, welcome to the club!I am the founder. As I told others,I will be adding much more to the club next year. This year is a bad year for me and I will not be contributing nearly as much as I did in the past.In the meantime, just research many of the helpful posts/threads,or add your own. See you around in the club! TA

Miami
Hi keylime, I am a Miami native myself (though I live in Chicago these days). Bienvenidos! Do you have any chess clubs, contacts or resources specific to South Florida?
|

This is off the subject of the intro thread, but I just had to say that my favorite pie at the local grocer has always been a key lime pie!I just wish someone would send me a high quality pie on dry ice from the keys!I heard they were the best! Not that Wegmans up my way does not have decent ones, but they are certainly no match for the better ones from Florida!
|
|
Now this is chess discussion I can take part in! Growing up in South Florida, I wasn't much of a pie guy, or a dessert guy in general, but now that I live in the Midwest (Chicago), where I've come to appreciate apple and sweet potato pies (among other things), I find key lime pie just doesn't get its due in much of the rest of the country. I think the best I've had in Miami has been from the iconic Joe's Stone Crab, and since they ship seasonal stone crabs, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a key lime pie on dry ice option. They have a Chicago location, oddly enough, though I can't vouch for it personally. But to our club founder Joe (appropriately enough), I'd have to think you could find a good key lime pie in New York City, probably not too far from the Marshall chess club!
