Just a side note on the link above. Not much has changed since that last report of mine.
I will still recommend any club member to invest in a really good opening book....like Hiarcs.Once you pay the fee(its a yearly fee that you can decline into your second year if you want)...then they send you a link in your email. You click on the link, load it into your file and then into your chessbase GUI like Shredder or Fritz. There are downloads for iphones and ipads as well.

Whats great about that opening database is that it is "updated"every 3 months. So in essence, you have a great Master/GM tool at your disposal with those variations and subvariant tree lines.Well worth the investment.I have my own custom book, but that is a different story.

So,you are just going to use the GK book and that's it?That is fine, but if your going to ask me how to improve...my answer is to invest and buy the best!!!!The GK book is no where near the best and has its limitations as Clint Eastwood is quoted in that movie"Dirty Harry"...saying...."A man must know his limitations".So then you are going to limit yourself with less than the best opening book and you ask my help in improving?Hmmmmm...I think there is something not quite right about your question!!!!!See?

Hidden fact...
Here is a hidden fact about opening chess databases.

From time to time in the other forums on GK I hear about all this cheating stuff and program analysis cheating going on after the database is out of book.Well as most of you know, using an opening database is legal and ok.And using a computer program to analyze your moves after your out of book is illegal and not ok.

But do you know that the book you are using many times contains an actual COMPUTER PROGRAM analysis that was studied and then LATER played by some master or GM who then used that Houdini program response(example)in their games weeks or months later?

In other words, with all this talk about cheating and not being able to analyze your games while the game is live, your still using an opening database that many times IS a computer analysis of your moves you are plugging into your opponent! So while a GM may have TAKEN CREDIT for that subvariant line,it may have NOT been his line but Houdini or one of those other top notch PROGRAMS!See now?????

Confused you?Well,i'll let you stew on that one for a while.

Good,free books....
This is a link for FREE book downloads of not the best or best up to date cutting edge Hiarcs, but it will be definitely great for your usage or others south of 2000 in rating, perhaps a bit higher.More sharp up to date(even by the month) cutting edge stuff is required for those lofty 2400-2700 players that need just that tiny edge in statistics to win, rather than draw all the time. One of my many "chess Bibles" is Hiarcs. My "customized books"are top secret!I could send you a link, but then i'd have to kill you!Ha ha!So remember, when you use any Hiarcs, even an old one,you are using what the top players on this site are using, including me.You must have some kind of GUI or Chessbase or Fritz/Shredder or Arena program to place the book into....so its not"stand alone"as they say in the business.I believe Arena can also be downloaded for free if you do not have any of the others.I have Arena on my windows screen, but its not quite my cup of tea,so I just keep it in stasis if something crashes with my other GUI.I guarantee, anything in the link below will supersede anything GK spits out.

Hey,for free, what more could you ask for?You can download a book or two, even on your phone and keep it for future use.

More on opening books/tree's:
Just a note to my members.Sometime this week or upcoming weekend over the Thanksgiving holiday,I will start in this thread or a new thread a more involved(but still basic)knowledge of some opening book "trees" and the meaning behind them and how to utilize their functions to help your game studies out.Opening books/tree's and even creating your own books is a subject that can get quite complex and could take me tons of club pages to complete. So,I won't go that far for now!I will just start off with the basics and show you "why"it is important to use some of these "tools" as you progress up the rating ladder. The post coming up soon in a few days is not necessarily recommended for players rated below class D,but nonetheless, have some value for all, even if just to take a curious peek.Any club members that own a good opening book like Hiarcs,Rybka,Houdini or many of the others and have a Fritz/Chessbase GUI,ect...just get it ready if you want.I will go through some of the basics and move on to more complicated book issues later on.

In any case, have a Happy Thanksgiving!Besides the Turkey,i'm having English Plum Pudding Cake as well! And of course,Cranberry wine, well chilled!
