My reasons...
... for taking with the knight first are merely intuitive, but are these.

1. If 4.Nxe4 Nxe4 5.dxe5, the f-pawn is free to support the e-pawn should we desire to do so.
2. The bishop moving to g2 will directly attack the Black d-pawn. The knights gone, both sides will have to start developing once more from scratch.
3. The e5-pawn puts a crimp in Black's development that be the more more felt owing to the absence of pieces already developed.

None of these are compelling, but they do go towards a 'gut feeling' that 4.Nxe4 is preferable, however marginally.

Nxe4
I like to force my opponents to prove that their sacrifices are indeed sound. 😁 But that's just my style. Taking with the pawn seems like a miscalculation and a mistake in the centre can be very costly later on. Thus I support Nxe4.

4. Nxe5
For me too.

A pawn is a pawn. And when ahead in material it's often better to reduce the material on the board, so trading knights makes sense.

If I may add...
I much liked archdukes three explanations, which - I think - all three are compelling albeit perhaps each on a small scale. Together they make real sense! I had originally just emphasised number 3, namely the value of having such an advanced pawn in the heart of the opponent's defenses! And not being "afraid" of doubling pawns - which is not always that bad!

What could I say more? You all said everything was necessary.
Nxe5 for me too of course.

4.Nxe5 is, in my opinion, the strongest move in this position.

4.Nxe5
My initial thinking was 4.PxP with the idea that retaining the knight and the pawn can help in launching a Kingside attack. But with the above detailed explanations, I can see that it will be difficult for white to retain the extra pawn with the knight on f3. So 4.Nxe5.

4.Nxe5
I'm happy to know that someone else thought like me that dxe5 was a good move...
After all your explanations I aqlso vote Nxe5

I think that 4.Nxe5 is good and is my vote, for the reason that stalhandske just mentioned. I am now asking myself what we can do with the advanced pawn. That question, however, would not apply if we took with the d4 pawn.

Sorry to comunicate that tennesseehiker by mistake moved in the game on his own accord, without consulting his club members,so he resigned the game and we start another one.
He apologized for the waste of time.
I hope you all will participate in this new game.

Will we start again with Nf3?

Same moves
Let's start the game before ...e5

03-May-17, 01:21

Well
Well I normally start d4, but let's go for e4 - it is what most play.
archduke_piccolo

I believe...
cyrano is suggesting we start with Black's 3rd move from the game just abandoned.

03-May-17, 01:45

Sounds good to me, assuming that they make the same intiial moves too. Let's start with 1.Nf3 again anyway.
charleshiggie
03-May-17, 01:47

But
But we are not under any obligation to follow the previous game - if we start with 1. Nf6 again, they may not follow the moves of the previous game - in fact if tennesseehiker was moving by himself and not consulting, then I would think it unlikely that they would follow the previous game again.

This is a bit of a farse!

If we are to do this again at all, I see no reason why we (as white) would not start the same way as before, viz. with 1. Nf3. That start was already discussed among our group originally so why even consider changing it?
elenapetrova
03-May-17, 04:17

I agree with stalhandske.
The first move has already been discussed, and the majority has gone to Nf3.
So our move is Nf3,without loosing more time

I think that posting the fen is a good idea, so we're here.
I will add that when picking and choosing which side to be on since, as usual, it's difficult, what helped me to decide which side to go on (one factor) is the fact that archduke_piccolo is also voting. And, he's only a member of this club and not KOH. Therefore, I felt that there was more for me to learn by voting here, as opposed to, the other club because archduke_piccolo doesn't just vote or explain what's good or bad about a move. That's the general pattern I see with voters. But, with ION, however, he goes into insight and gives me things to think about. His post on May 2nd at 03:04 is an example. Just like with his annotations and comments in my annotations, I find it very helpful and is one reason that his teaching style blends right in with my style of learning.

1.Nf3 is as good as always.

1.Nf3
and I also second premoving the moves we agreed on previously, given Black does not change anything.

team participants
Not sure about the etiquette of consultation games, but would it be possible to exchange a list of the participants from each club ?
baddeeds
03-May-17, 08:09

I don't think so, theoretician because that would involve voting in one club and then the other. Which means looking at what they're doing which is against both club rules. Therefore, we can't exchange.
5imon
03-May-17, 08:13

There's no reason why we can't send a list of who is playing on our team and receive a list of who is playing on theirs. It can be done via the captains without anyone needing to look at a different thread.
baddeeds
03-May-17, 08:15

That's true. I suppose that we could have both club founders count who's voting here, and then, who's voting there.
cyrano
03-May-17, 08:49

But
tennesseehiker made the LAST move without consulting the club members or ALL moves?
theoretician
03-May-17, 09:05

I meant for this new game, it would be good to exchange the team list. Just to make sure that we are really having a team vs. team game rather than a team vs. a single player.
elenapetrova
03-May-17, 12:58

I think that Tennessee has done all moves without consulting the club.

I will ask tennesseehiker a list of their players, and send him our list, that is:
