Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that d2 seems still the best square for the bishop
Bd2

You are both right to move the bishop
You are both right to move the bishop. I personally agree with Elena that Bf4 looks the natural move, overprotecting the e5 pawn, so freeing up the Nf3, and so threatening Nxd4.
However 22. Bd2 was played, and awarded 3 points by Daniel King. He doesn't mention Bf4. He doesn't ward anything for anything else, merely saying the 22. b3 weakens the c3 square and that 22. Nxd4 would be premature.
Well done Laura (penelope80) in selecting the right move!
22..... Rad8 was played in reply. What now.
In passing, I would like to thank Ion (archduke_piccolo) and Simon (5imon) for posting the positions.

21. h3 Qe6 22. Bd2 Rad8
Take 2

My move is 23.Re1, putting this lazy rook into play
5imon
03-Nov-20, 12:49

23. Re1 looks solid. Black can't take on a2 with the queen at the moment since the h6-pawn is threatened.

How about 23.b4 though, to try and get our bishop into the game? It's a bit stifled currently.

Well done
Yes you are both right, Re1 was played. Daniel King GM gives it 4 points. Also gives 2 points to Nh4.
Black replied 23....Nf5. What now?

Black's position looks very solid and White must find something "special"
A simple move like a4 leads to nowhere
The only Idea I found is the crazy Bg5 !?!?
Threatens Bf6 and Black seems forced to accept the "gift"
archduke_piccolo
05-Nov-20, 12:03

@elenapetrova...
... why you placed 'gift' in quotation marks. The gift is not a gift:

24.Bg5 hxg5
25.Nxg5 Qc8 (seems better than ...Qd7)
26.Rf4 h6
27.g4 ...
Now, if 27...Ne7
28.e6 looks pretty strong.

Black seems to get reasonable counter-play by

27...Ne3!
28.fxe3 dxe3
29.Qb1 e2+
30.Kh2 ...
But I still like White's active game.

Elena and Ion
Elena and Ion, you are right!
24. Bg5!! was played. Daniel King awards this mark 7 points.
Black replied 24.....hxg5 now what?
5imon
05-Nov-20, 13:06

Position after 24...hxg5

It's got to be 25. Nxg5 next.

Knight retakes:
25.Nxg5

In my previous posting, I made an amendment to the heading, and forgot to add the missing words at the beginning of the posting. It looks as though I was criticising Elena's use of quotation marks. Actually that was not my intention; quite the opposite in fact.
elenapetrova
05-Nov-20, 14:53

I did not reveal my tactical analysis (very similar to Ion's line)
and now, of course Nxg5 is the natural move
charleshiggie
06-Nov-20, 23:50

Right again!
25. Nxg5 is of course correct, well done! 1 point. Black replied Qc8. What now?

07-Nov-20, 11:18

I agree with 26. Rf4 where black must play 26...g6 and white can play 27. g4 to keep up the pressure. Then we see where the knight goes.
charleshiggie
08-Nov-20, 06:11

26. Rf4 is right
26. Rf4 is right (4 points) nothing for anything else. Black replied 26....g6

WHAT NOW?
archduke_piccolo
08-Nov-20, 12:07

Hit the Kanidgit...

... 27.g4.

If 27...Ne3, then
28.fxe3 dxe3
29.Qb3

Or 27...Ne7
28.Qb3
(or possibly 28.e6)
5imon
08-Nov-20, 12:43

27.g4 looks good to me too
is it a silly English "Kanidgit"?
archduke_piccolo
08-Nov-20, 23:14

'Silly English'
Of course it was. I was just in to mood for it at the time. Call it whimsy. I like being whimsical occasionally, don't you? Sure, and it can look bat-ordure doolally, but who cares?

27.g4 is right
27.g4 is right, 3 points to Simon and Ion. Nothing for anything else. Black replied Ne7. What now?
5imon
10-Nov-20, 06:45

27.g4 Ne7

I would play 28. Qg3 here with the no-so-subtle plan of shifting the queen on the h-file if allowed.

If black plays 28...f6 to try and kick the knight then we have 29. Rxf6 Rxf6 30. exf6 and the attack continues.

elenapetrova
10-Nov-20, 07:41

Agree.I think Qg3 threatening Qh4 is now winning for White

28.Qg3 is also my guess.
After the line shown by 5imon and Nd5, which seems to be Black's best try, the g6 pawn is left flapping in the wind like a residual autumn leaf.

After, say, Qd3, Black's king cannot defend g6, as White now controls Black's 7th rank on the kingside. That situation suggests Nf4 as a possible defence, but then what does Black do after Qe5?

For example, Re8 leads to mate in 2.

28 Qg3 played
28 Qg3 played, 4 points. For bonus points, can anyone tell me what other move also wins?
Black 28.....Kg7 now what?
5imon
10-Nov-20, 11:08

After 28...Kg7
29. Qh4 must be winning eg 29...Rh8 30.Rxh7+ Kg8 and then 31. Rh7
