Passage from Isaiah
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."

(Isaiah 55:8-11)

Great verses from the Old Testament
"And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?"

(1 Kings 19:9-13)

Prophecy of Jesus Christ's Arrival on Earth
The prophet Isaiah wrote this prophecy approximately 700 years before Jesus Christ arrived on earth.

"Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

First Verses From The Gospel of John
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."

"It came to pass"

I love that line.

@pawny
What's that from?

I know the shortest verse in the Holy Bible is "Jesus wept," but don't remember the Gospel it was from (was said at a gathering where Lazarus had been entombed after death.)

But don't know the verse you cited.

Looks like it appears quite often in the Holy Bible.

Here's an interesting article on the verse, what it means and how it's relevant today:

A lot of meaning in those four words, and a truth easily forgotten (trials don't last.)

A lot of mine come from Isaiah and Psalms, but I haven't read much from the OT in quite a while. Jeremiah's got some great ones too.

It's all about Ecclesiastes for me. Solomon was truly wise.

28-Sep-16, 18:47

The conclusion in Ecclesiastes really goes against the grain of what many people think today, but makes perfect sense if you view things from an eternal perspective. There are some great verses in Ecclesiastes too - the one about there being a time for everything is quoted often at funerals and a lot of people know the one about there being nothing new under the sun

Honestly all of the books attributed to Solomon have always been my favorite.

Proverbs: Don't pull a dog's ear and you won't get bit.

Saved me from at least one bad situation when I thought to myself: This guy isn't the sort of fellow one should get involved with.

But according to Solomon, all of this is vanity too, isn't it? Everyone one of us on here talking our opinions....it's all vanity.

It totally is vanity
You'd think the outcome of the election hinged on what was said in the GK forums the way some people on here get so emotional in their arguments. Truth is, we're pretty much screwed no matter who wins, but at least Trump will be entertaining.

This country's slid a lot since the time I first voted (mid '80s.) The national debt, lousy economy and foreign entanglements that could have and should have been avoided are only three reasons. But I don't view it as only one party's fault - I think GW Bush was the worst president of my lifetime and think Reagan was the best, with Bill Clinton a close second. But I don't think HRC will govern anything like Bill.

I'm on here for the entertainment (chess and forums.)

@pawntificator
I take comfort in knowing the Lord's in control...

That's why I won't view it as the "end of the world" (figuratively speaking) if HRC wins. And who knows? Maybe she will be a good president, though I'd be very surprised if that turned out to be the case. Then again, I'd probably be surprised if Trump turned out to be a good president, but for different reasons (temperament and opposition from the media and political establishment.)

It is...
Went through some turbulent times in the last few years and knowing not only that the Lord was in control but that better times were ahead made those times much easier. Made the right decisions (in hindsight) about a lot of different things during those times because I sought and prayed for His guidance.

I won't presume to think I know your situation...

Sometimes, in my experience, a "non-answer" can be more a question of timing, like the guy at a blinking red light who wants to know whether to turn right or left while traffic is still going by. Some of the best decisions I've made are ones I waited a while to make.

But again, I'm just offering thoughts based on my own experience which could be totally irrelevant to your situation or what you're talking about.

On the broader issue of salvation, I believe once you have it, you never lose it. I think there are more than enough verses in the Holy Bible to back that up. Some Christians think salvation is conditional, but I don't think that view can be credibly supported from a Biblical standpoint.
saintinsanity

I've ne'er been that drunk. I'm actually a good driver. I wait at red lights until it's my turn.

I've never appreciated the whole "sometimes the answer to a prayer is no answer"

I mean, I appreciate it on an intellectual level, but I don't think it's a good answer for the fellow just suffering for help.
andrew983
28-Sep-16, 20:33

@pawntificator
Not so much "no answer" as "wait."

There are a lot of verses in the Holy Bible that speak to the importance of waiting. Psalm 25, which is probably my favorite Psalm, starts out by including this concept:

"Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.

Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause."

Sometimes, I think we're in a difficult situation for character-building purposes:

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."

(Romans 5:1-5)

Because what is God's ultimate plan for our lives? Isn't it to make us more "Christ like?"
