Bordertown........................................................................ Splendid series; great crime thriller/police procedural that has all the ingredients of a memorable show. The series takes place in Lappeenranta, a small city to the northeast of Helsinki that lies near the boarder with Russia. It's a slow burn but the viewer is totally engaged. Each season is structured like an anthology where 2 or 3 episodes tell the main story but with the personal stories of the major characters woven throughout the series. Thus, the viewer is able to watch the crime story as well as what's happening to the families of Kari, Lena, and Robert. The viewer totally enjoys watching Kari Sorjonen (played by Villa Virtanen), an eccentric rather socially awkward but brilliant detective, who puts the pieces together quickly using an unusual technique he calls the memory palace to solve the crime to the utter astonishment of the SECRI team. He has Asperger's and savant syndrome which make him ideal for investigative work. Lena Jaakkola (played by Anu Sinisalo) is equally fascinating. Here's a former Russian agent recruited by the local police (at the behest of Kari) who means business. She's feisty and brave but she has a soft side as a mother. She and Kari make up a good tandem. The supporting cast is great. No doubt, this series will not be as memorable and as enjoyable without Matleena Kuusniemi, Ilka Villi, Kristiina Halttu, Janne Virtanen, Sampo Sarkola, Olivia Ainali, Lenita Susi, and Max Bremer. Make time to watch this engrossing film. An added bonus is the delightful scenery in winter with the place knee-deep in snow and tall, slender trees dotting the landscape. www.google.com |

SoftaireLappeenranta is a wonderful small city in south-east Finland, not far from Savonlinna which we visit every summer for the opera festival there. Both cities are in the beautiful Finnish lake district and both are next to the huge lake called Saimaa, which is really a complicated conglomerate of several interconnected lakes. |
