Subbing for the SpEd teacher today. Hectic 15-30 minute assignments all day, but no classroom management or logistics.

Very different than managing a class.

And
Working with the most interesting kids in the school šŸ˜‰

Indeed, I was one of those kids šŸ˜…. Dyslexia and ADHD, also from a broken home and a very abusive Father. Which actually was a blessing in disguise as my mother and I were removed from the Abuse when he committed Adultery when I five.

Those children just learn differently and aren't pressed into the cookie cutter assembly line. šŸ˜‰

Teachers who showed me love or what is known as tough but fair love. Had the greatest impact on me.

I try. As a sub, our time is limited. But never too short to show genuine love and caring

Oof
Little Ireland - 1st grade w Down’s Syndrome.
Alex - Kindergartner with a Mohawk and a wandering streak… I carry walky-talky in case ā€˜Student A is out of the classroom!’
2nd grade Billie who won’t get out from under the table.

And snotty hugs full of contagion 🤣🤣

So much fun

Sounds like you have your hands full today. Nothing worth doing is easy.

It’s relatively easy compared to managing a classroom. Keeping focus on what’s important - ie the students’ well-being. I talk to them with respect and humor and understand that my role is simply to make this moment more enjoyable and meaningful.

Quite different than subbing as a classroom teacher.

And that is utterly different than actually teaching a class on a daily basis

Lol
Sitting in a dark gym for 20 minutes while Alex runs in circles

Putting my education and experience to work.

Special Ed teachers are a different breed… the ones who worked with our son saved his ( and our) lives……

In his last year at SE school he was presented with a ā€œmost improvedā€ Award. Every year since then we have funded a similar award for a child from the graduating class. I presented it last week to a wonderful young person who, among other things, is non verbal with significant behavioural issues but who , in spite of all her challenges, will lead her best life with the support of a loving family and friends

I second that. They need to have the patience of a saint, the work ethic of a ceo and the compassion of another saint.

Chris, the guy I covered for today is amazing.

You and your wife have done amazing work with your son. You should be proud
