A Controversial Anniversary
April 29 marks the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook's "discovery" of Australia. Setting aside the obvious fact that Australia had been inhabited by Aboriginal peoples for tens of thousands of years, Cook was by no means the first European to set foot on the fabled terra australis incognita (“unknown southern land”).

Dutch navigator Dirck Hartog landed on the west coast of Australia more than 150 years prior to Cook's arrival.

An inauspicious start
Before Cook's boat could even land at Botany Bay, he shot one of the local Aboriginal people.
