'Australia is not a finished product': General David Hurley sworn in as 27th Governor-General
The link between the governor-general and a distant monarch is one not immediately apparent to most Australians.

The role of the governor-general is, for most people, to be a calm and reassuring presence in the background of their lives.

It is an office that has, as Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday morning following the swearing in of the 27th Governor-General, David Hurley, "provided the stability in spite of politics for more than a century".

"The governor-general finds the good in this country and shines a light on it. In a global age of fragmentation and tribalism, we have in our system a constitutional office beyond politics that enables us all to come together."

General Hurley's first words after being sworn in were in the Ngunnawal language, the traditional owners of Canberra.

"There's so much that can be done in this country when we shape the environment to show people the opportunities that are there," he told a morning tea following his swearing in.

He acknowledged but did not name the "difficult issues" faced by Australians and said he was confident they could be met by people with "good hearts".

General Hurley finished with the words of writer David Malouf, the son of a Lebanese father and British-born mother with Portuguese heritage, "Australia is still revealing itself to us. We ought not close off possibilities by declaring too early what we have already become. Australia is not a finished product".
