The United States of America Celebrates Black History Month In February Born a slave, Lemuel Hayes, was abandoned by his parents at five months of age. Latered hired as an indentured servant. Unprecedented for Black people in the early 1770's America, he was allowed to attend school where he learned to read. He later took to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was such a powerful Church preacher, he had Whites and Blacks in his services. Other preachers asked Lemuel Hayes to proof read their sermons. Widely respected among his mostly White community, he was given an honorary degree from a nearby college. This made him the first Black American to earn a college degree.
