![]() Thank you for accepting me into the club. I want to expressed concern about the timeout rule. There are people on gameknot who have accepted there will always be circumstances where they Timeout but still want to play for the fun of the game. But for most people the fun of the game is in winning. This may often result in excluding people with chronic illness and also excludes people with chronic illness who have intermittent periods of wellness where they may not Timeout, but their time out history results in automatic refusal of application to join a team for a short period, Really appreciate being able to join your club. |

![]() I wonder if the timeout rule is really even necessary. I realize it would be hard to arrange a category of players for whom there would be timeout forgiveness. But, what is the point of the timeout rule? I guess my basic question is whether it creates more inequities than it solves problems. How many people would intentionally abuse the time limits on their games for non-legitimate purposes, and what advantage would it give them if they do? Other than health issues, the reason for timeouts are typically family affairs like death, sickness, weddings, and reunions, computer breakdowns, or work or school-related matters, like an out-of-town work assignment or finals. Why should people be penalized for forgetting to raise a vacation flag? Premium members do get several five-day forgiven timeouts per year, but those are only for five days, could run out, and do not apply to non-premium members. Anyway, an issue to discuss. ![]() To your point, is the timeout rule necessary? I would say it is, because otherwise Why have the vacation flag? Who wants to be tied to a game that goes on indefinitely due to no timeout rule. OTB chess play has a timer, why not correspondence? I think the bigger issue here is how timeouts are implemented. For instance, why not have a statistic similar to ratings? As in the 90-day, 1 year, and all-time categories? Why couldn't the timeout category have these options so captains, as well as players themselves, can see this? Then, everyone can make their own choices based on this information. I am in favor of "give the information, and let people decided how to implement it." ~Tim |

![]() It is called a vacation flag for a reason, because vacations are foreseeable. I do not think people should lose games if more important concerns intervene in their play. Perhaps an automatic postponement flag if the time-per-move is exceeded is the answer. gameknot send warnings about time running short, at least to premium members, so people who access their computers regularly should have no excuse. It is those who for some reason cannot access a computer that I am concerned about. This automatic postponement might at least be provided to premium members, and would be a further perk for memberships. One consequence of the timeout rule is people setting their time-per-move limit to five or seven days. That is annoying, because it creates problems in match making. If the timeouts did not have such extreme consequences, everyone could set their time to three days per move, but with forgiveness for exceeding that limit occasionally. Most people with five or seven days per move still move more often than once every three days. They set the longer limit to cover emergencies. I do agree with you about the categories of timeouts based on 90 day, a year, and all time. As alic02 worries, can timeouts haunt you forever? |

![]() I just had a good player with no timeout history on my team suddenly disappear and timeout on all their games. Hopefully they are okay and will return soon, but those timeouts will remain seen on their profile until their profile no longer exists… |
