Is Christ real?
This is a topic that i often wonder about...I'm neither a believer or disbeliever but i did and was seriously debating weather to become a priest...
That obviously didn't happen.

I know that this topic will give me grief..

Most Likely
I think he was a real person. I have devout Catholic friends who reject the doctrine of the trinity. There are probably even priests who do.

While there are no contemporary accounts of Christ outside the gospels, and our earliest manuscripts of those are centuries after his death in a foreign language (not the original Greek, Chaldean, and Hebrew), and while that is plenty enough time for "Paul Bunyan" style stories to develop (Paul Bunyan isn't as old as the first manuscript mentions of Jesus), I still think he was most likely real.

He was probably executed. Three days later it is even likely his followers managed to abscond with his body to another location. The purported tomb of Jesus can be visited even now. I didn't go see it when I was in the Holy City. Instead I snapped photos of the old city from the Mount of Olives, and then went swimming in the Dead Sea.

Christ is alive!
2 Corinthians 5:14,15,
“For the love of Christ drives us, because we have come to conclude this, that one died for all; so, then they all died; and he died for all in order that those who are living no longer keep living for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”

LS I would find it had to believe that devout Catholics and priests may reject the doctrine of the trinity. I believe in the Nicene Creed.
You can not pick and choose, what you believe. It doesn't work that way.
Doctrine of the trinity: Other faiths have other beliefs, I'm catholic and I believe in the trinity.

Picking & Grinning
Actually, it works exactly that way. No two people share identical belief--we are all as unique as special little snowflakes.

Some folks strive for conformity within their splinter grroup, but it is always mutating. Constantly changing. And this remains true throughout a person's life. Do you believe exactly the sme now as you did twenty years ago? Most folks views mature as they age, and adapt to changing circumstances.

How many different Catholic faiths are there? Bob pointed out there is the Holy Roman Church and Eastern Orthodox Church. That schism occurred centuries ago, circa 1054. Armenian, Byzantine, Coptic, Syriac (west and east), and Maonite are further divisions. Among each of these primary branches are many subdivisions.

Now, whether you were born and raised Catholic or converted to appease a spouse, you presently choose to identify as Catholic. So long as you are not also a Democratic politician most US diocese will not excommunicate you. If they try, you just switch to a different diocese and wait for a better pope. Maybe a Brazilian who had been a bar bouncer before taking the holy orders.

And you still choose. I know plenty of Catholics, and have discussed with Catholic priests the question of the divinity of Christ. If you don't believe Jesus was God incarnate, your understanding of the Trinity is very different from mine. I mean, I agree with you this doctrine is pretty fundamental. Yet here we are. The spectrum of religious belief encompasses the entire rainbow, through every shade of colored lens, and infrared goggles too. You choose to remain, or you choose not to voice disagreement. You choose to believe whatever tale you are told, or you choose to neither accept, nor reject. No one is forcing you to have an opinion on everything.

Prophet or profiteer? From all over the Russia and beyond they came to a remote Siberian mountain to hear a message of brotherly love and spiritual unity. Many sold up their homes and adopted a vegan and pastoral life, following would-be messiah who calls himself "Vissarion". Some say he leads his followers along a path of righteousness, or does he really lead them astray? RT meets members of the Church of the Last Testament as well as the charismatically reclusive man himself. He's revered by many as a teacher but at least one former member thinks differently. She once embraced what she thought was an eco-village and left when she began to see Vissarion as a cult leader, and was devastated when her daughter and grandchild stayed behind.

Reincarnate Jesus's story does not end with the first youtube video. Please check the second youtube video BBC. He was accused of fraud and arrested by Putin similar to what he did to dissident Nalvany. The persecution of current Jesus is similar to what was done to real Jesus in New Testament of the bible. Jesus was arrested by Roman soldiers for insurrection. Jesus claimed that he was a king. Romans could not accept this because Roman emperor was the only king that they know of.

Lord Shiva

There are writings by Romans that do indeed mention him.

Does this count as evidence?
Tacitus’s last major work, titled Annals, written c. 116–117 C.E.,

www.biblicalarchaeology.org

So both Tacitus and Josephus had written about him

Fred, I too was in that agnostic position, at about age 40, and completed a semester in a liberal (= open-minded) seminary with weekend classes. The level of biblical and historical scholarship was impressive. However, it didn't change my worldview. Since then, I have found myself far more comfortable with total disbelief in anything supernatural.

It appears that Jesus lived & that others have have embellished the story.

Responding to other comments: I have known many Roman Catholics, including priests, and have found a wide range of adherence to canonical beliefs.

Jesus Died
about 30 CE.

So these writings were nearly a century after the fact. But yes, that is better evidence than the gospels, actually.

I'm glad someone else had the same thought saguaro.at age 40
I was 18 when i was thinking about it. I remember the Pastor coming over a few times too convince me.
That may have been a mistake on his part.

Thinking
I study physics, with an emphasis on cosmology. I’m working on a book on quantum mechanics, as it ties in with ultimate origins.

I have no issue accepting the idea our universe is the handiwork of God. The Genesis account maps to modern cosmology in a startlingly accurate way, for being penned by ancient goat herders. I love how they noted the snake evolved from a terrestrial tetrapod. Very clever of them. Their classification of bats as birds was a côck up. Pretty trivial mistake.

The genealogy offered in Numbers is likely a lot of wishful thinking. If you research modern databases the records are pretty spotty. Belief Mediterranean records were better kept is ignis fatuus. And the story of Noah (Gilgamesh) doesn’t even work as a local flood myth. A flood we have swept his raft or boat into trees or rocks and capsized it. That is just how floods work. Noah didn’t have a rubber raft, he built a battering ram.

I hate to gore anyone’s ox, but taking any of this literally is a recipe for self deception. Knowing the manuscripts were written during human dark ages we witness the propensity for inhumanity, as well as a historical record of ancient technology. Chariots. Swords. It would have been nice if the Bible focused more on customs and practices, such as details on how the pyramids were constructed (not that there is any real mystery), sewage systems, water works, artistry and craftsmanship, and less on the treatment of slaves or the punishments for fornication (who among us hasn’t hooked up with members of the opposite sex outside marriage bonds?) or growing hybrid crops, or the proper way to sacrifice goats and lambs.

I enjoy history, and have the works of Plato and other Greek and Roman authors. I have a number of books written prior to the invention of the light bulb. Human perspectives are altered extensively by our environment. If you were raised in a Hindu household your religious beliefs are dramatically different from those of white evangelicals. The influence of parents and neighbors is persuasive. And the number of people who change their faith to appease a spouse is remarkable. Dr. Laura became Jewish after marriage to a Jew, and abandoned that faith on her divorce. I have no doubt as to her sincerity and commitment at each stage of her life. Had she ever dropped acid she might easily have suffered another religious epiphany, just like Old Testament prophets experiencing ergot.

“These mushrooms are safe to eat. Those mushrooms killed Thag right fast. And this other kind had Darg talking to God for a week.”

So was Jesus real? While probably so, does it make any difference? It is like arguing if Santa is real. Santa is an idea. A useful concept for promoting goodness and joy. We can use Jesus to the same effect. Though somehow white evangelicals seem to have confused the message of Jesus to justify greed, oppression, and all the wickedness of the Pharisees Jesus so frequently condemned. It is a marvel to me how Jesus got hijacked into a Messiah of prosperity gospel, instead of the savior of the poor and wretched he had always been.
