Inactive teams
I hope this is not a sign of things to come but there are 5 inactive teams on the ladder.
There are actually 61.
How can you know if a team is inactive, short of trying to challenge?

Go to Teams > Team table, at the bottom of the list you will find inactive teams
Oh, thanks very much!
“The White Knight” is 5th on the ladder, though is on the inactive list! How come? Sure looks an active team. Means cannot challenge.
Looks like the captain is no longer a premium member
Quite possibly. The Captain hasn’t been on line for 9 days and that was when match making stopped.
Co-captain is not a premium member either. 4th on ladder now.

Inactive teams
I was just counting the teams on the ladder most on the table are long gone. I do not think a co captain can make challenges without a captain. No captain no team which puts the team members in limbo. Geoff.

Inactive teams
On the ladder marked inactive are. The white knight captain and co not renewed membership. Colle's camp captain not renewed membership. Petits pousseurs captain and co not renewed membership. Aganang chess masters captain not renewed membership now the only team member. Invitus captain not renewed membership. Geoff. It's been a slow day.

I do not know how big the Team Ladder was at it largest, but...
...I know from a Team Forum post that at the end of January 2011 there were 336 teams on the Team Ladder.

team activity comes and goes on an annual basis in Gameknot --- One reason for America seems to be the phenomena that the kiddies are back in school. So don't worry (too much) --- It will all return to it's usual wild self some day, God willing.

Inactive Teams
Not all inactive teams are on the ladder. I had never heard of zzzz, Orc's Army, or some of the others. I wonder if Russia Time inactivity is the result of Putler's war.

Inactive Teams
Many of those have only one member--likely a captain who failed to pay dues. One has thirty five members, while a few others my team has played in times past. I tried to sort the list by members but my device did not do that. Would run more analysis but I guess I need to get ready for work.

Although I wasn't here that far back, I remember when Gameknot had way more teams on the ladder and always heard of it exceeding 300 before my time here. I missed out. What's more, that number continues to drop more and more it seems. Excluding any that may have already been deleted, only four new teams have been made this year. I think a big problem is, many captains use hand held devices for Gameknot. To me, it is much more complicated than being on a PC when it comes to starting matches and managing your team. To add to that, I think Gameknot could implement something where both your available players and the other team's available players show up on the same page side by side. That would really help, but whether Gameknot would ever try to update that system in any way is certainly up to question. Seems unlikely, but you never know.

"...players show up on the same page side by side..."
Joe, I accomplish this with a spreadsheet. I created it initially by copying from my team page, and update it daily by copying & pasting from the team page. So I have that next to the opposing team's team page on my PC screen.

Not
on a handheld, though.

It helps if you have 2 devices, like a phone & a tablet. But I would hate to set matches thru handhelds!
That’s a great way to do it saguaro, for me I open multiple tabs on my PC to help make it easier and quicker, usually a minimum of 4. I can’t start matches well from my tablet, though I still can if needed. I don’t use the mobile version of Gameknot, I have no idea if that version makes it any easier from a handheld device. Speaking of which, I’ve never tried to use Gameknot on a smartphone…mainly because I don’t have one My co-captain was starting matches from their smartphone, but I can see it was difficult for them to follow things. I should check it out more myself to get a good idea of how it works.

"I should check it out more myself"
Joe, you really don't want to do that to yourself!

I consider a team as "active" if they have 3 times the active matches as players on the team. When I started Kings of the Castle there was 325 teams on Gameknot and by far the largest majority were active. Now there are only 159 teams with a lot inactive. Why? I think it is because of the pairing system.
How large were the 325 teams (on average)?
Were the teams smaller on average when there were 325 of them? I am wondering whether part of the explanation for the decline in the number of teams is that they have become "consolidated."
Very small number of merged teams. Many team players are no longer on a team. Verify this by the "advanced player search" feature.
I don't remember and I wasn't paying close attention
I know that there used to be a lot more teams than there are now, but I do not remember what it was like.
It was easier to find matches when there were many teams, especially for the highest rated players and the very hard to pair (high 90 day rating).
