![]() This first entry, which can be summarized as Peter’s denial of Jesus, requires a little context: Earlier, Peter, a disciple of Jesus’, said he was willing to follow Jesus no matter what - even to death. Jesus replied that Peter would deny knowing Him three times before the rooster crowed that day. Here is that short passage to provide context for the longer passage in which Peter denies even knowing Jesus. “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.” (Luke 22:31-34) Now, the longer passage in which Jesus’ statement to Peter comes true. “Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the rooster crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the rooster crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:52-62) I had to substitute the word “rooster” for the word used in the Biblical account because the latter has since acquired a double meaning and was flagged by GK the last time I quoted this passage (roughly five years ago.) |

![]() And while many saw the Resurrected Christ in bodily form, Saul apparently only saw Him as a light from Heaven. But much like Jesus’ disciples, Saul’s behavior changed dramatically after the encounter. Jesus’ disciples, after they saw the Resurrected Christ, went from hiding out in fear of the Pharisees to boldly preaching Jesus and refusing to stop even after they were beaten and imprisoned. Saul, later renamed Paul, became a missionary and wrote some of the greatest books of the New Testament, including (my favorites) Romans and Galatians. “And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:1-13) I like this passage because God, in my experience, often communicates this way - in a “still small voice” and not the cliched fire and brimstone so often associated with Him. I also like this passage because it relates to these verse in Psalm 91 (great psalm.) “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:11-12) There is a lot to this passage in 1 Kings 19. I read a commentary on it once that really illuminated (for me) the anguish that Elijah is going through and how, after his great work in demonstrating who the true God is, he is looking to hang it up. (I would have posted the 1 Kings 18:17-40 passage before this one but it’s too long, as is the commentary I read on this passage from 1 Kings 19.) |

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:3-9) |

![]() To set the scene, David is fighting with soldiers in a battle against the Philistines when he becomes very thirsty. “And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the Lord. And he said, Be it far from me, O Lord, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.” (2 Samuel 23:14-17) Here’s a commentary that speaks to what David did: “In our culture, pouring a liquid on the ground seems a waste. It’s one thing if it came from the supermarket, but war-water! If I had risked my neck and had fought my way through a camp of Philistines to collect a little well water, I would have been upset with King David. ‘What do you mean, you’re not going to drink it? Are you kidding me?’ David’s drink offering presents us with a problem when our values do not align with his. So, consider the relative value of three things in the story: the water, the lives of the mighty men, and the drink offering to God. Modern societies often take water for granted. We are known for being wasteful. Even so, tipping a tumbler of it on the ground is generally understood as a needless waste. Ancient Mediterranean people probably valued water more than we do. We place a high price on life. David seemed to recognize the value of life too. He equated the water with the blood that his three warriors had risked spilling. ‘All the more reason not to throw it away,’ responds the average person today—until we get to the third item that needs valuing. The value of a drink offering to God can only be understood in terms of who God is and what an offering represents. If we doubt God’s existence then giving anything to Him would be very silly. If God is distant, uncaring, or impotent then He would not be worthy of much of an offering. But if we know how great, loving, and powerful our heavenly Father is, then we will gladly pour our very lives out for Him. The act of offering something to God is an act of worship. David understood that the liquid in his hand was more precious than mere water; he valued it in terms of the best blood in his army. There is no record of any objections from the mighty trio when they saw what David did. They understood the honor of having their hard won water poured on the ground as a drink offering to God. What greater honor could there be for them or for God? He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.” (John 21:15-17) It’s interesting that Jesus asks Peter three times if Peter loves Him (which was the same number of times Peter denied knowing Jesus after Jesus was arrested.) But the Greek word for “love” is not the same each time Jesus asks Peter. They range from a friendship kind of love to a self-sacrificing kind of love. When Jesus uses the self-sacrificing form of love, Peter responds with the friendship form of love. Nevertheless, Peter would be an instrumental part of the early Christian church and would be crucified upside down on a cross - at his request. Peter did not feel worthy to die in the same manner as Jesus Christ. Here is a commentary on this amazing passage (John 21:15-17,) which is so full of meaning: “c. Do you love Me more than these: Jesus asked Peter to compare his love for Jesus to the love that the other disciples had for Jesus. Before he denied Jesus three times Peter claimed to love Jesus more than the other disciples did (Matthew 26:33). Jesus wanted to know if Peter still had a proud estimation of his love and devotion to Jesus. i. It is possible that these referred to the fish and a fisherman’s life. Some think that Jesus asked Peter if he was willing to give up fishing again to follow Him. Yet, Peter’s previous claim to a greater love suggests that Jesus referred to the other disciples, not the fish. ii. Jesus asked Peter not so that He would know – He already knew, and Peter was aware that Jesus knew. It was for Peter’s self-examination the questions were asked. d. Do you love Me more than these… You know that I love You: Jesus asked the question twice using the word agapas, which in its Biblical usage often speaks of an all giving, uncaused, unselfish love. Peter answered Jesus using the word philio, which in Biblical usage sometimes has in mind a more reciprocal love, a friendly affection. Some translations express Peter’s answer as, ‘I am your friend.’ i. Some commentators see no significant distinction between the two different ancient Greek words agapeo and phileo in this passage. Most believe that Peter was now more reserved in his proclamation of devotion. There is surely some significance that Jesus asked Peter this question twice, using the same ancient Greek word for love, and Peter answered twice using a different word for love. ii. ‘He is simply saying that his heart is open to Christ and that Christ therefore knows that he loves Him with the best love of which he, a sinful human being, is capable.’ (Boice) iii. ‘There are preachers of the gospel among us who have dragged a full net to shore, the great fishes have been many; they have been great and successful workers, but this does not prevent its being needful for the Lord to examine them as to their hearts. He bids them put by their nets for awhile and commune with him.’ (Spurgeon) e. Feed My lambs… Tend My sheep: After Jesus asked and Peter answered, Jesus twice gave Peter an instruction regarding how he should act towards God’s people. The idea was that Peter could demonstrate his claimed love for Jesus by feeding Jesus’ lambs and by tending Jesus’ sheep. Jesus emphasized that they were His sheep, not Peter’s. i. Tend My sheep: ‘The verb used here has a somewhat broader meaning. It is ‘Exercise the office of shepherd’ over against simply ‘Feed’. (Morris) ii. Tend My sheep: ‘By which he seems to intimate that it is not sufficient merely to offer the bread of life to the congregation of the Lord, but he must take care that the sheep be properly collected, attended to, regulated, guided, &c.; and it appears that Peter perfectly comprehended our Lord’s meaning, and saw that it was a direction given not only to him, and to the rest of the disciples, but to all their successors in the Christian ministry.’ (Clarke)” “a. He said to him the third time: The two previous questions Jesus asked Peter in the presence of the other disciples were not enough to accomplish what Jesus’ wanted to do in the life of Peter. Jesus had to ask him the third time. b. Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time: Peter understood the significance of the question being asked the third time. It was a plain reminder of his previous three-time denial. i. ‘Peter had thrice denied his Lord, and now Christ gives him an opportunity in some measure to repair his fault by a triple confession.’ (Clarke) c. These ancient Greeks loved a constant and always changing stream of news and information.” “a. Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious: Paul did not begin with an exposition of Scripture, which was his custom when dealing with Jews or Gentiles who were familiar with the Old Testament. Instead, Paul began with general references to religion. b. In all things you are very religious: Many ancient observers noticed the religious character of Athens, and some thought that Athenians were the most religious of all people. But when Paul said this of the Athenians, he didn’t necessarily mean it in a positive way. Religion can lead one away from God, and if we trust in a false religion, it is little credit to say of us that we are ‘religious.’ c. I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD: Paul understood that in their extensive pantheon, the Greeks had an UNKNOWN GOD, who covered any god that may have been neglected. In explaining God to them, Paul started at the beginning: God is the Creator, and we are His creatures. ‘This view of the world is very different from either the Epicurean emphasis on a chance combination of atoms or the virtual pantheism of the Stoics.’ (Stott) ii. Paul recognized that these philosophers had to change their ideas about God. They had to move from their own personal opinions to an understanding of who God is according to what He tells us about Himself in the Bible. b. And He has made from one blood every nation of men: Paul told them we are all descended from Adam through Noah, and that there is one God who created us all and to whom we all are obligated. Since God created us all, we should seek the Lord… though He is not far from each one of us. c. For in Him we live and move and have our being…For we are also His offspring: These two quotations Paul used from Greek poets are attributed respectively to Epimenides the Cretan [600 B.C.] (who Paul quotes again in Titus 1:12) and Aratus [310 B.C.]. i. Paul did not quote these men because they were prophets or because all their teaching was of God. He quoted them because these specific words reflected a Biblical truth, and by using them he could build a bridge to his pagan audience. d. Therefore since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone: Paul told them of our responsibility to God because we are His offspring. Since we are His offspring, we are responsible to have right ideas about God, and therefore must reject the wrong idea that gold or silver or stone could represent God. i. ‘The Athenians have acknowledged in their altar inscription that they are ignorant of God, and Paul has been giving evidence of their ignorance. His first mention of Jesus presented Jesus as a righteous judge. i. Certainly, Paul did not want to leave the Athenians with the idea that Jesus was only a righteous judge. However, he was stopped short before he could tell them everything he wanted to about Jesus. Probably, all that Paul said before was introduction. He would now begin at what he really wanted to speak about: The person and work of Jesus. c. He has given assurance of this by raising Him from the dead: The emphasis on the resurrection is important. Paul saw the resurrection of Jesus as the assurance of this; it demonstrated that Jesus Himself, His teaching, and His work were all perfectly approved by the Father. i. Paul seemed unable to preach a sermon without focusing on the resurrection of Jesus. For him, none of the Christian life made sense without the triumph of Jesus’ resurrection.” “a. When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: The resurrection was not a popular idea among Greek philosophers. ![]() In this passage, Elijah waits for God’s promise of rain after a very long drought: “And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not. And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.” (1 Kings 18:41-46) Here is a good article on this passage: “Hold on to the Promises of God: A Cloud the Size of a Man’s Hand. Hovering above me was a perfectly blue sky. ‘What a fabulous day to get off early,’ I thought as I drove over the Hubert Humphrey Bridge on Tuesday afternoon. Grateful for this beautifully painted scenery, I turned my head to soak in the moment. As I did I saw a lone cloud in the sky to the north. Immediately, I did a double take and a portion of scripture rose up on the inside of me. Indeed, just above the sky line was a ‘cloud the size of a man’s hand’ in this vast sea of blue. ‘A cloud the size of a man’s hand…’ At first glance this cloud wouldn’t mean much to anyone, me included. But with this mild nudging from the Holy Spirit and the knowledge behind this portion of scripture, this small, lone cloud gave me a fresh reminder of the power of holding on to the promises of God. The setting for the scripture in this Old Testament story is this: In the middle of a three year drought, the Lord made a promise to the prophet Elijah stating that He would send rain to Israel. But, like many promises, this one did not come to pass right away. In fact, after the promise was made, there was no visible change in sight. Unmoved, Elijah began to cry out to the Lord in prayer- standing on the promise of God. Six times he prayed. Six times he sent his servant to look for any sign of rain. Six times, Elijah’s servant came back with nothing. No Word. No Sign. No Hope. Despite the grim report, Elijah remained steadfast by continuing in prayer. Undaunted, he sent his servant out a seventh time. Only this time his servant came back with a tiny glimmer of hope- stating, ‘Oh yes, a cloud! But very small, no bigger than a man’s hand rising out of the sea.’ Many of us would have written off this small glimmer of hope. After living in a time of drought for so long, we likely would have ignored this sign and/or quit praying all together. But not Elijah. On report of this small cloud, Elijah told the king to ‘go down before the rain stops you.’ Can you guess what happened next? After three long years, the Lord fulfilled His Word. It began to rain. There are many promises written in the Word of God for us. For instance, the Word says, the Lord shall supply all your needs (Philippians 4:19); that you were healed by His stripes (1 Peter 2:24); if you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). He promises you peace and a good night sleep (Psalm 4:8); And that the fruit of your womb is blessed (Deuteronomy 28:4). What we do with the promises written in the Word of God make the difference in our lives between rain and drought- a promise made and a promise fulfilled. If Elijah had not clung to the word of the Lord; if he had stopped praying on the sixth time; if he had ignored the glimpse of hope, who knows how long it would have been before the answer came. I don’t know what your heart’s desire is. Or what promise you long to see fulfilled in your life, but I encourage you today… Be on the lookout for the cloud in your life that reminds you of His promise. And if you don’t see it right away… Keep looking. Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep standing. Isaiah 55:11, ‘In the same way, the promise that I (the Lord) make does not return to me, having accomplished nothing. ![]() Christianity, Judaism and Islam all accept Genesis as a holy text, and, in Genesis, God promises Abram (later renamed Abraham) that he would be the father of many nations and that through Abram’s son, all nations would be blessed. Abram and Sarai were childless and well beyond the ages associated with childbearing, so, when Sarai thought God was taking too long to give Abram a son, she told her husband to sleep with her maid, Hagar, so he could have a son. So Abram’s first-born son (born to Hagar) was Ishmael, who is considered a patriarch of Islam. But Sarai would, about a dozen years later, conceive and give birth to Isaac, who is considered a patriarch of Israel. The question of which son God had promised Abram is important because God said through that son all nations would be blessed. Jesus Christ comes from the lineage of Isaac, while the prophet Muhammad comes from the lineage of Ishmael. So Sarai telling her husband, Abram, to sleep with her maid Hagar to have a son led to the conflict between Muslims and Jews that continues today. After Hagar became pregnant as a result of sleeping with Abram, she apparently treated Sarai badly, and Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that Hagar fled from the house. And it was in the wilderness, where Hagar was pregnant, despondent and alone, that God approached her. “Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee. But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face. And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.” (Genesis 16) Here in Genesis 17 is what God promised Abram concerning Abram’s son: “And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.” (Genesis 17:3-7) Later in this chapter, God specifically identifies Isaac as the son of Abram through whom all nations would be blessed: “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.” (Genesis 17:19-22) It seems pretty clear from the above passage which son God would bless all nations through, but, if my memory is correct, Muslims believe sections of Genesis were tampered with to give that conclusion. After Sarah gave birth to Isaac, Hagar was driven out of the house a second time (with Ishmael) after Ishmael mocked the newly-born Isaac. And God again rescued Hagar in the wilderness: “And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” (John 1:10-11) But here is the passage from the Gospel of John that includes Pilate’s reaction to being told Jesus said He was the Son of God: “Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. They wanted Him dead not because He claimed to be King of the Jews, but because He claimed to be God, the unique Son of God. i. ‘It is certain that the Jews understood this in a very peculiar sense. He was the more afraid: Pilate was not angry or amused when he learned that Jesus made Himself the Son of God, he was more afraid of Jesus than ever. Pilate saw something in Jesus – even beaten, bloodied, and spat upon – that made him think that it could be true that the Man before him was more than a man. i. ‘It may be that the comparative the more afraid should be given a superlative force, such as it often has in New Testament Greek, and rendered ‘exceedingly afraid’.’ (Tasker) ii. ‘He can scarcely be called a religious man, but the news that his prisoner had made divine claims scared the governor…every Roman or that day knew of stories of the gods or their offspring appearing in human guise.’ (Morris) c. Where are You from: Pilate wanted Jesus to defend Himself and give Pilate more reasons to let an innocent Man free. He wanted Jesus to explain what made Him different than the dozens of other prisoners Pilate had judged. Yet Jesus already told Pilate that He was King of a kingdom not of this world (John 18:36); Jesus already said where He was from. Therefore, Jesus gave him no answer. i. Though he already had the answer, one could say Pilate asked the right question. ‘His question is almost the most pertinent question that can be asked about Him, for to know where Jesus comes from is to know the most important thing about Him.’ (Tasker)” enduringword.com Of course the Pharisees’ rejection of Jesus as the Messiah was prophesied centuries in advance. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Representing the lowest of the low — a female in a society where women are both demeaned and disregarded, a race traditionally despised by Jews, and living in shame as a social outcast — she not only has a holy encounter with Christ but also receives eternal salvation. And her testimony convinces an entire town to believe, too. What was the significance of the woman at the well, and why is her tale important to Christian believers? Who Was the Woman at the Well? The story of the woman at the well is one of the most iconic encounters in the Bible. Told in John 4:1-42, it depicts how Jesus, traveling through Samaria on the way to Galilee, sat down at a well in the town of Sychar. There, around noon, while His disciples were in town buying food, He encountered a Samaritan woman coming to draw water from the well. He asked her for a drink, and their talk took off from there — culminating in her salvation and many more from her town, too. We are told a few key facts about this woman. While her name was never revealed, we know she was female and a Samaritan, a race with whom Jews did not associate, as Scripture explains. We know she had had five husbands, and the man she had currently was not her husband. We also know, from understanding cultural and historical traditions of that time, that women typically drew water in groups in the morning, and it was often a social occasion. The fact that she was drawing water alone, at midday, probably indicates she was a social outcast. And we also know she was deeply curious. She felt comfortable enough to not only talk with Jesus but also ask Him pointed questions. His answers to those questions, and their ensuing dialogue, reveal a great deal more, adding even more significance to the story. What Did the Woman at the Well Ask Jesus? Her questions, without understanding inflection, tone of voice, facial expressions, and other characterizations, appear stark and pointed. She asked Jesus a series of questions when he requested a drink: How can you ask me for a drink? (v. 9) Where can you get this living water? (v. 11) Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock? (v. 12) His responses were just as pointed — and astonishing. In short, Jesus told her not only who He was, the Son of God, the Messiah, but that He had come to offer living water, the kind that “will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (v. 14). What is notable is the way all of this is revealed, and the way she appeared to see through His parables and glimpse the truth behind His words when so many others, including Jewish experts and scholars, could not. What Happened During Jesus’ Talk with the Woman at the Well? After Jesus asked for a drink, the woman at the well asked how Jesus could ask this of her, as she was a Samaritan and Jesus was clearly a Jew. He replied, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (v. 10). She pointed out that Jesus had no cup, then asked about this so-called living water, as well as if he was greater than Jacob. While the text does not reveal whether her tone was sarcastic, rhetorical, or fully sincere, many scholars suspect she was probably being facetious. After all, Jacob was the grandson of Abraham, the son of Isaac, and the traditional ancestor of the people of Israel, who likely founded the town in addition to providing the well where they spoke. Jacob’s notoriety was great. But Jesus’ clearly, earnest answer, elaborating on this living water He could provide, prompted her to ask Him for it. That’s when Jesus shifted to the next phase of their dialogue, which reveals that not only did He have what she needed, but He knew things about her that were both surprising and telling — that she had been married five times and was not married to her current man (v. 18). Now inferring Jesus was a prophet, she then began to speak on religious matters, specifically noting that Jews believe the place they must worship is Jerusalem (v. 20). “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth” (v. 21-24). Then Jesus declared what He hadn’t made public in many circles: He is the Messiah (v. 26). His friends returned right then, and the woman ran off, leaving her water jar behind and proclaiming, “Come, see!” (29). What Happened After Their Talk? After Jesus talked to the woman at the well, she appeared to have been astounded at how Jesus knew such truths about her. As she told the other Samaritans, “He told me everything I ever did” (v. 39). Intrigued, they approached Jesus, and He stayed in their town two days talking with them. Because of what Jesus shared with them, “Many more became believers” (v. 41). Her testimony led to their salvation. What can we learn from the Woman at the Well? This story has significance for five key reasons. First, it shows Jesus’ love for the world. The fact that the woman at the well was of such low standing — gender, race, and marital status — yet they talked so directly, almost as equal conversational partners, shows Jesus’ heart for all people, not just some. Just as we see in other stories, such as when He welcomes children (Luke 18:15-17) or heals the demon-possessed daughter of a Canaanite woman (Matthew 15:21-28), Jesus accepts all. All are welcome in the kingdom of God. Second, it reminds us that only Jesus can offer salvation. Jesus offers living water — eternal life. This water is not like regular water but rather comes from God Almighty and lasts forever. Third, it shows the importance of offering our testimony. When the woman believed, she immediately ran off to tell others. Her words made an impact. As Scripture tells us, “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony” (v. 39). Fourth, it underscores how Jesus is the Messiah. He says He’s the Messiah, and the woman and the townspeople believe Him. As the Samaritans told the woman at the end of the story, “We know that this man really is the Savior of the world” (v. 42b). And fifth, it reveals yet again how Jesus was rejected by His own people. That the woman was a Samaritan yet believed is probably not an extraneous fact but rather the point. The account of the woman at the well comes shortly Jesus’ encounter in John 3 with the Pharisee Nicodemus — a race and class of people her polar opposite. Yet Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council and likely an expert on his faith, did not understand the significance of what Jesus was saying. Indeed, as Jesus told Nicodemus, “You are Israel’s teacher … and do you not understand these things?” (John 3:10). But this town of so-called enemies, we are told, believed. The story of the woman at the well is a rich example of love, truth, redemption, and acceptance. And best of all, not only does Jesus accept her, but He accepts us, too. ![]() In this short passage, the Apostle Paul tells the church in Galatia that anyone who is living under the law is cursed and that Jesus Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law so we could enjoy God’s blessings and the gift of righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ. “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: The Christians from a Jewish background who believed Gentiles should still live under the Law of Moses thought that it was a path to blessing. Paul boldly declared that instead of blessing, living under the works of the law put them under the curse. i. It isn’t hard to see how these Christians believed that living under law brought blessing. They could read in the Old Testament many passages that supported this thinking. Psalm 119:1 says, Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD! Psalm 1:1-2 says, Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. ii. We must understand how the Law can bring blessing. First, we see that the word law is used in two senses in the Bible. Sometimes it means “The Law of Moses, with all its commands, which a man must obey to be approved by God.” Sometimes it means “God’s Word” in a very general sense. Many times when the Old Testament speaks of the law, it speaks of it in the general sense of God’s Word to us. When Psalm 119:97 says Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day, the Psalmist meant more than just the Law of Moses; he meant all of God’s Word. Seeing this, we understand how the Bible is filled with praise for the law. Secondly, we are blessed when we keep the law because we are living according to the “instruction manual” for life. There is an inherent, built-in blessing in living the way God says we should live, in fulfilling the “manufacturer’s recommendation.” iii. When Paul said that as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse, he didn’t mean that the law was bad or the Word of God is wrong. He simply meant that God never intended the law to be the way we find our approval before Him. He knew we could never keep the law, and so God instituted the system of atoning sacrifice along with the law. And the entire sacrificial system looked forward to what Jesus would accomplish on the cross for us. c. Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them: To prove his point Scripturally Paul quoted from Deuteronomy 27:26. The Old Testament itself shows us that if we do not keep all things in the law and actually do them, then we are under a curse. i. The important words are all and do. For God to approve you on the basis of the law, you first have to do it. Not simply know it, not simply love it, not simply teach it, not simply want it, you must do it. Secondly, you have to do it all. Not some. Not just when you are over 18 or over 40. Not just more good than bad. Deuteronomy 27:26 specifically says that to be justified by the law, you must do it, and do it in all things. ii. All means a lot. It means that while some sins are worse than others are, there are no small sins before such a great God. “Jewish keepers of the law would overlook small transgressions. Paul would not.” (Morris) iii. “It is worthy of remark that no printed copy of the Hebrew Bible preserves the word col, ALL, in Deuteronomy 27:26, which answers to the apostle’s word all, here. St. Jerome says that the Jews suppressed it, lest it should appear that they were bound to perform all things that are written in the book of the law. Of the genuineness of the reading there is no cause to doubt: it exists in six MSS. of Kennicott and De Rossi, in the Samaritan text, in several copies of the Targum, in the Septuagint, and in the quotation made here by the apostle, in which there is no variation either in the MSS. or in the versions.” (Clarke) d. Cursed is everyone: Paul’s point is heavy; it weighs us down with a curse. If you are under the works of the law, the only way you can stand approved and blessed before God by the law is to do it, and to do it all. If you don’t, you are cursed. i. Cursed is a word that sounds strange in our ears. Yet in the Bible, the idea of being cursed is important, and frightening – because it means being cursed by God. Not only cursed by our own bad choices, not only cursed by this wicked world, not only cursed by the Devil – but especially cursed by God. He is the one Person you don’t want to be cursed by. a. Yet the law is not of faith: Some might come back to Paul and say, “Look, I’ll do the best I can under the law and let faith cover the rest. God will look at my performance, my effort, and my good intentions and credit to me as righteousness. The important thing is that I am really trying.” Paul proved from the Old Testament itself that this simply isn’t good enough. No; the paths of approval by the law and faith don’t run together, because the law is not of faith. b. The man who does them shall live by them: The quote from Leviticus 18:5 is clear. If you want to live by the law, you must do it. Not try to do it, not intend to do it, and not even want to do it. No, it is only the man who does them who shall live by them. i. It is very easy to comfort ourselves with our good intentions. We all mean very well; but if we want to find our place before God by our works under the law, good intentions are never enough. A good effort isn’t enough. Only actual performance will do. ii. This passage from Leviticus 18:5 is another often-quoted principle from the Old Testament. Nehemiah (Nehemiah 9:29) quoted it in his great prayer for Israel. The LORD Himself quoted it through the prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 20:11, 13, and 21). Paul also quotes it again in Romans 10:5). iii. The effect of Paul’s use of Scripture in Galatians 3:10-12 is overwhelming. We understand that we don’t actually do the law. We understand that we don’t actually do all the law. And we understand that this put us under a curse. Galatians 3:10-12 is the bad news; now Paul begins to explain the good news. a. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law: Because we didn’t actually do it and do it all, the law put us under a curse. But now Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law. Redeemed has the idea of “buying back” or “purchasing out of.” It isn’t just rescuing; it is paying a price to rescue. Jesus bought us out from under the curse of the law. i. Simply put, in Jesus, we aren’t cursed anymore. Galatians 3:10-12 left us all under a curse, but we are not cursed any more because Jesus bought us out from under the curse. ii. Redemption is an important idea. “Redemption points to the payment of a price that sets sinners free.” (Morris) Redemption came from the practices of ancient warfare. After a battle the victors would often capture some of the defeated. Among the defeated, the poorer ones would usually be sold as slaves, but the wealthy and important men, the men who mattered in their own country, were held to ransom. When the people in their homeland had raised the required price, they would pay it to the victors and the captives would be set free. The process was called redemption, and the price was called the ransom. iii. The image took root in other areas. When a slave had his freedom purchased – perhaps by a relative, perhaps by his own diligent work and saving – this was called “redemption.” Sometimes the transaction took place at a temple, and a record was carved in the wall so everyone would forever know that this former slave was now a redeemed, free man. Or, a man condemned to death might be set free by the paying of a price, and this was considered “redemption.” Most importantly, Jesus bought us out of defeat, out of slavery, and out of a death sentence to reign as kings and priests with Him forever. b. Having become a curse for us: This explains how Jesus paid the price to rescue us. Jesus became cursed on our behalf; He stood in our place and took the curse we deserved. i. It stops us in our tracks to understand that the price He paid to buy us out from under the curse of the law was the price of Himself. It didn’t just cost Jesus something, even something great – it cost Jesus Himself. We know that men cursed Jesus as He hung on the cross; but that compares nothing to how He was cursed by God the Father. He made Himself the target of the curse, and set those who believe outside the target. ii. “Paul does not say that Christ was made a curse for Himself. The accent is on the two words, ‘for us.’ Christ is personally innocent. Personally, He did not deserve to be hanged for any crime of His own doing. But because Christ took the place of others who were sinners, He was hanged like any other transgressor.” (Luther) iii. “Whatever sins I, you, all of us have committed or shall commit, they are Christ’s sins as if He had committed them Himself. Our sins have to be Christ’s sins or we shall perish forever.” (Luther) c. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” When did Jesus pay this price? The principle of Deuteronomy 21:23 shows that Jesus received this curse upon Himself as He hung on the cross, fulfilling the Deuteronomy 21:23 promise of a curse to all who are not only executed but have their bodies publicly exposed to shame. i. “This passage did not refer to crucifixion (which the Jews did not practice), but to the hanging on a tree or wooden post of the corpse of a criminal who had been executed. But in the New Testament times a cross was often called a tree and there is no doubting that that is what Paul has in mind here.” (Morris) ii. Hangs on a tree: In the thinking of ancient Israel, there was something worse than being put to death. Worse than that was to be put to death, and to have your corpse left in the open, exposed to shame, humiliation, and scavenging animals and birds. When it says hangs on a tree, it does not have the idea of being executed by strangulation; but of having the corpse “mounted” on a tree or other prominent place, to expose the executed one to the elements and supreme disgrace. iii. However, if anyone was executed and deemed worthy of such disgrace, the humiliation to his memory and his family must not be excessive. Deuteronomy 21:23 also says “his body shall not remain overnight on the tree.” This was a way of tempering even the most severe judgment with mercy. Significantly, Jesus fulfilled this also, being taken down from the cross before night had fully come (John 19:31-33). d. That the blessing of Abraham might come: Jesus received this curse, which we deserved and He did not, so that we could receive the blessing of Abraham, which He deserved and we did not. It would be enough if Jesus simply took away the curse we deserved. But He did far more than that; He also gave a blessing that we didn’t deserve. i. The blessing of Abraham is what Paul already described in Galatians 3:8-9: the blessing of being justified before God by faith instead of works. e. The Gentiles in Christ Jesus: This tells us to whom the blessing of Abraham comes. Paul didn’t mean that it only comes upon Gentiles, as if Jews were excluded, but that it comes also upon those Gentiles in Christ Jesus. i. The phrase in Christ Jesus is important. The blessing doesn’t come because they are Gentiles, any more than the blessing of being right with God comes to Jewish people because they are Jews. It comes to all, Jew and Gentile alike, who are identified in Christ Jesus and not by their own attempts to justify themselves. f. Receive the promise of the Spirit through faith: This means that this blessing is ours in Jesus on faith and not the principle of law. The promise is received, not earned. enduringword.com |
