USCF membership
new.uschess.org I am a life member of the USCF for decades now.But I am not active in any OTB or CC tourneys for a long time, especially since I moved out of the USA.While the USCF is mainly for USA citizens and Canada,Mexico,Hawaii you can still play in various CC tourneys just about in any country that you live in. The USCF of course, differs from the FIDE which is more international.Whats nice,is for about 40 dollars a year or about 37.30 Euros you can get Chess Life Magazine either sent to you or electronically for your computer reading. That magazine is invaluable to many chess enthusiasts and also keeps you up to date on events,GM games and more. Those who live in the US territories can play in some tourneys like the Golden Knights and other tourneys which are 7 player sections where you can win about 135 dollars per section win!Other tourneys you can get a trophy or a win certificate. The magazine yearly subscription and membership alone,is worth the 40 dollars!I had paid double the 40 dollars for about 10 years and became an automatic life member! But I am not sure they even offer than anymore,i'd have to check. You can buy a Chess Life Magazine sometimes on the magazine rack at a news agency, but for the price of just a few,you might as well try the USCF out for one year and see if you like it!

Once you become a USCF member, that also opens up the door for you to enter many OTB events and even Blitz tourneys as they appear across the USA and other areas.Even if you do not enter any USCF OTB events, you can still visit the event and be an onlooker with many IM and GM tourneys. So,it is indeed a new potential world for you.GK is not the only world of Chess you know! But you would be surprised of how many players do not know that!
