Do you play for OTB chess clubs
Hi I am just setting this post up to see who plays for their local chess club in otb games,
Im going to join my local club at Alnwick in the Northumberland Chess Association,I dont think there are many club members by the sound of it.But I should be able to learn from them as most have played for years, and I will be the weakest player, having the least chess experience.

used to
play regularly at OTB clubs both in NZ and Plymouth one of my problems at the moment is my shift pattern makes it difficult to play at a club. Although there is one that meets 16 miles from where i live on a Monday night which i get off, but driving 16 miles there and back on a winters night on 1 of the only 2 nights i get off a week does not appeal much at the mo!

You will almost certainly learn from the experience dreamstomper.

thinking about it
hya, if otb stands for 'over the board' then i'm also thinking about starting at local club.......might be a bit weird playing with real bits for a change....glad you think it is worth it

Alnwick Chess Club
Thanks for the feedback on the forum, I got an email from Alnwick chess Club captain, yesterday and Ive been invited to go along with the team to their next league game on thursday, there will be other players I can play, who are not involved in the team games, and I can also see at first hand the league games, as all this will be new to me, marking down my moves and using a clock, it will be good practise and help me progress, so I'm looking forward to going. I played the chess club team Captain between Xmas & New Year in an OTB game and got beaten 2-0, while I was enquiring about joining the chess club.but I enjoyed the experience as he pointed out a few options I could have played and gave me a few tips, regarding different openings.

I play for my local club in the blackpool & fylde league when i am home and for durham uni A in the DCCA league otherwise. OTB is where i started and is where i will stay, internet is good for a laugh but i find i miss too many tactics on a screen

Champions !
Well I thought I might as well put it in writing:Alnwick Chess Club are Champions of Division 2 in the Northumberland Chess League, they have 1 game left to play, which is tonight at Morpeth. Not bad for a small team of players !

I play a lot of chess games OTB (about 25 a year). Play for a local club in Brighton with very few players unfortunately - but enough to make a 6 man team. I have been playing with notation sheets and clocks for a long time and have just got used to it. I must admit though the clock can worry you at times (especially when you can hear it ticking away). I myself have got into a lot of time trouble which is why I don't do rapid play. I just find it impossible.
The fastest I play is 42 moves in 90 mins, which is fast enough. County matches are a bit slower (35 in 105 mins) I play for the sussex teams. Does anyone play for their county at all?

If we are mentioning championships.....
Durham Uni A team just won division 2 in the DCCA league. Next year will be in with the big boys.

I started playing for Lancashire U100 team at age 14 and have moved through the 125's and now play the odd game for the 150's.

Whether or not I'm good enough, I run a club in the school I work at. With a few exceptions, I try to get the kids to avoid making glaring errors... like putting the queen on the wrong square at the start of the game.
Played a bit for local club - in Redbridge, East London - but usually found the silence unnerving & my 3/4 games exhausting!

Steven, do you know if any of your teams are going through to the national stages? Who knows? we might even have to play each other. The u125 are through and we have to win our 150 Match tomorrow to go through with them.

The 125's have won all three of their regional games and are through to the nationals.

The 150's (in my absence i will point out) lost both their games to cumbria(!!) and yorkshire(!!!!!) and so have finished for the season, sadly.

Have sussex had any success recently? Lancs haven't won anything in 3 seasons now.

haven't in previous years, but this year is exceptional. Open and 175 teams are through (I'm not good enough for those lol) as are 125. But not 150 yet! it would be amazing to get 4 teams through. Anyone else represent counties?

I don't at the moment
and cowardice is preventing me from joining. I have never played chess OTB in my life (bar a very few games in my teens) so do not want to take this step, the advantage of playing online is that when I make a poor move I just turn the computer off and walk away!!

I was in corres with the husband of a colleague who advised me to join (he is on the committee so biased) but he did say I would learn faster through OTB play than online alone.

Another concern is the basics like annotation, how long does it take to pick that up?

Cheers
Jon

annotation doesn't take long to learn jon. If I can teach 10 year olds to do it in 2 hours then you should easily be able to master it in 1  . Clocks you get used to as well, I try to press it when its not there nowadays

Looking at your rating on here you probably are easily good enough to join an OTB club. We get far worse players that come to mine. It is true that you learn faster as well, i only play online to keep myself sharp

annotation & Clocks
Itchynscratchy is right, Ive learned much more at the club, as they go thru the game and point out my bad moves and show which moves would have been better, and they also explainwhy they would have been better, I never used annotation or clocks until I went to the club, and was surprised how easy I picked it up,(just practice writing your moves down even while playing online) as most boards now have markings, which makes it easier, also the clock is easy to get used to, just keep using one while you play at the club, and altho you may miss a few presses when you first start, you quickly get used to them, but you need to get into the habit of pressing the clock button with the same hand you move your chess pieces with. Its easier than you think, and try and join a club, its the best thing I ever done, only wish i did it sooner.
