Lack of Active Communication
I would like to see some more verbal exchanges from the club members. The last posting was made by me in response to streetsy on 11-may-07. i haven't seen any postings since that time. What are your thoughts about Jazz, Blues, Chess Strategies, etc. Since most of the club members have a higher chess rating than me, can you recommend some books i might read to improve my game?

Well, I've only read through about half of one book, but I liked it. It's called "Starting Out: The Sicilian" by IM John Emms. It goes through several variations and opening to try concerning the Sicilian, if you like the Sicilian that is. Other than that, I haven't read any Chess books.

Thanks, codyj, I will give it a try. i think my openings are weak. I assume the book didn't capture your attention since you only read half of it.

Oh no, I really enjoyed it, it's just that it got a little boring, or I just got lazy and stopped reading it. I think that it helped it a lot though, and now I love playing the Sicilian, or, at least, what I know of it, lol.

chess books
The one book that got me through my early years of chess was James Mason's The Art of Chess, published by Dover. I had to buy 3 copies because I was always lending it and not getting it back. It covers the Max Lang Attack better than Modern Chess Openings 13. I think we all make the mistake of reading too much opening theory and too little end game theory. Edmar Mednis wrote 3 excellent endgame books, Practical Bishop Endings, Practical Knight Endings and Practical Rook Endings, all published by Chess Enterprises. I hope all of the above are still available. I found Hans Kmoch's Pawn Power a very interesting and worthwhile book. Ludek Pachman's books on Strategy and Tactics, published by Doubleday, are also worthy of a read.
