![]() grew out of "field hollers" and "work songs" in the days of slavery in the U.S..... The very earliest "blues" recordings began around 1895 and up until 1920 they were commonly described as "race records" and were marketed and sold exclusively to blacks.... However in 1920 Mamie Smith released a recording entitled "Crazy Blues" that sold 75,000 copies in the first month at a dollar a copy..... This caught the attention of the bigger record company executives and of a sudden the blues crossed over so to speak... |
