zorroloco 24-Aug-06, 20:36	plan b did you hear that the fda just passed a new policy that will allow sale of the plan b morning-after pill to women 18 and older without a prescription. for you non-americans, you may not know that there has been a long and vituperative battle regarding this action. pro-life advocates call it an abortion pill while pro-choice folks say that it will reduce abortions. there has been plenty of misinformation thrown around (by both sides) and it has been an emotional struggle with morals (or is that ethics?) playing a large role in the debate.

Think about all that sex and you don't even have to take birth control everyday anymore, jump pop a handful after you do it! I don't think it's such a good idea. It's not that the drug is unsafe in anyway, hell it's just a synthetic progesterone, and women who are pregnant easily produce ten time the level naturally. The problem I have with it being so freely available is that women will forgo seeing the doctor at all. Generally the type of situations that would call for a woman to want Plan B, carry higher risks of STDs and assault - two medically signifcant condition that need not only medical attention but government mandated reporting. in order to make sure these cases do not fall though the gaps, I think this product should be prescription only and after seeing the doctor. By the by - if you don't feel like buying this product a few days worth, taken all at once, of any birth control pill will do the same thing.
