Speech, speech, speech, speech
*climbs up on my stump to answer the thundering crowd*

Since I've already developed a bit of a reputation as a long winded poster, I'll try to keep my mission statement short and sweet.

I believe in pie. If you vote for me, you too must believe in the delicious power of pie or some other equivalent pastry. If you're diabetic or living a gluten-free lifestyle, you may substitute a desert of your choice. Point being, you definitely have to like some kind of food in order to be on the same page as me philosophically.

I promise not to make use of excessive smilies or lol's. I promise to spell check most of my posts, except for when I'm feeling cocky or lazy. I will not take this too seriously. First and foremost, this is all about playing with language for our mutual amusement. In that respect, there really is no difference between a member and a member who also happens to be a mod.

Seriously, though. While I may hold my opinions strongly and defend them vigorously, I will always uphold and respect the right of every other member of this community to do the same. A good forum is one in which a variety of viewpoints are represented, and people know how to agree to disagree. Ideally, we all close our windows having learned a little more about the world than we knew the day before.

If problems arise, my personal preference is to handle them quietly. I'll pm the person and see if I can get the results I would like to see through communication that doesn't involve everyone on gameknot. If the person in question prefers that all discussions be held out in the open, I'll respect that wish and make it so. Regardless, I'll keep a hard copy of any conversation that might cause members to have questions about how a situation was handled. I will not share the contents of any pm without first obtaining permission from the author, but I will be open and fair in my explanations. I will answer every question to the best of my ability, and I will look for the answers if I don't already have them.

Especially if those answers involve a good pie recipe.

*steps down off of the podium and notices crickets chirping and the gentle sound of... what? people snoring? At this hour... oh, well, I suppose that's acceptable. Good night then all.*

Imoutofpeanuts declares: IOoP in 06!
As the libertarian candidate for moderator, I come here expecting not to win. The best I can hope for is probably my own vote and to act as a spoiler. This is not due to widespread unpopularity of my ideas nor my relationships on this forum, but instead due to the abject probability that a libertarian could win anything.

You see, I advocate fewer restrictions and less regulation in this forum. While you have candidates here offering you pie and new eras, I offer you nothing. However, unlike my fellow candidates I won't barrage you with taxes. How do you think the pie and new eras within this forum will be paid for? There is no such thing as a free lunch, especially one that includes dessert.

My qualifications are simple. I have been a long-time participant on these forums and have acted as a moderator at the Lost Social Forum. Anytime I believed DoK went overboard, I confronted him on it. I acted on my principles. I will do the same thing here if I am elected moderator. As always, Im a proponent for freedom and given the nature of this board, I think thats a vital qualification for moderator.

To conclude, I will have day-to-day activities with all the people in this forum. And then, if that unfortunate situation happens — if that situation, which would be very tragic, happens, I will be prepared to carry out the responsibilities of the founder of the 1st Amendment forum. And I will be prepared to do that. I will be prepared not only because of my service in the Lost Social Forum, but because of my ability to communicate and to lead. It is not just age; it's accomplishments, it's experience. I have far more experience than many others that sought the office of moderator in this forum. I have as much experience in the Lost Social Forum as JDH did when he sought the moderator position. I will be prepared to deal with the people in the Jeff Heiman administration, if that unfortunate event would ever occur.

Before I go have a dinner of a potatoe, let me just say that a vote for Imoutofpeanuts is a vote for freedom and a vote against Osama Bin Laden.

Negative campaigning
Just to throw it out there... Kementari 's former moderating responsibilities led to Willie Horton being freed from jail. Do you really want Willie Horton running around in your forums?

Also, Bobbynox never showed up for his Gameknot guard duties. He went AWOL. If you can't depend on him to defend this website from attack, can you really expect him to defend your rights?

Don't vote for me
I won't listen to you, and if you try to say anything I will delete your post and probably your club membership to boot. I can't be trusted and nothing I ever say is true, except for this sentence. If I get more votes that IOOP it will be a sad day for humanity.

Just to be serious for a second.
Why do we value these club forums ?.. or any any other place we can go to freely express our views. I like to think that these forums represent a tiny skirmish in the perpetual war against indifference. What is indifference? Etymologically, the word means "no difference." A strange and unnatural state in which the lines blur between light and darkness, dusk and dawn, crime and punishment, cruelty and compassion, good and evil. What are its courses and inescapable consequences? Is it a philosophy? Is there a philosophy of indifference conceivable? Can one possibly view indifference as a virtue? Is it necessary at times to practice it simply to keep one's sanity, live normally, keep our jobs, enjoy the company of our loved ones. But for the person who is always indifferent, his or her neighbor are of no consequence. And, therefore, their lives are meaningless. Their hidden or even visible anguish is of no interest. Indifference reduces the other to an abstraction. In a way, to be indifferent to that suffering is what makes the human being inhuman. Indifference, after all, is more dangerous than anger and hatred. Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony, one does something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses. But indifference is never creative. Even hatred at times may elicit a response. You fight it. You denounce it. You disarm it. Indifference elicits no response. Indifference is not a response.Indifference is not a beginning, it is an end. And, therefore, indifference is always the friend of the evil and powerful, for it benefits the aggressor.
Why do I mention this here ?.. because I believe the position of a mod carries with it a responsibility, even among our little group.. our little band who have got together to form a club on some inconsequential chess site. The reponsibilty of a mod is to fairly encourage a free exchange of views and thus help fight indifference. Important word " fairly "..to be fair, act with fairness. I dont like talking about myself, so I asked my wife and a few friends if they would call me a fair person. My wife's response was immediate.." I have never met anyone so passionately devoted to the idea of fair play, or so willing to go to such extreme lengths to protect the underdog " Then she reminded me that I have been beaten up, lost jobs, spent days in court, all for people I barely knew and have never seen since.
So there ends my campaign message. Just to say I had some experience in the LSF as a mod, deleted a couple of posts that I considered were attacks against the person rather than against the views expressed. I did try to argue the case for those who were recently booted from that club but more or less came up against a brick wall. I have remained a member there because it was a good club and I hope it will become one again in the future.

leo
dude! preach it!

but seriously, i can tell by your thoughful posts and by what you choose to argue that you are a compassionate and fair person. it was for that reason i chose you to be a mod. in fact, all the mods here at 1A impress me greatly and i believe will be far better at the job than i. one thing i am good at is recognizing quality people.

thanks to you, jd, kem, and bobby for consenting to be part of, and to help create this club. thanks to all the members for participating. this is my first real experience with this type of forum, and i am finding it valuable, educational, and fun.

i value you!

There were two candidates which I particularly liked. But Leo, you won me over. You seemed to have really thought about your position as a mod and it seemed to come from the heart.

You have my vote

votes
ok...so, leo and kem are not eligible to receive votes for the simple reason that they are already mods, and we cannot have three mods running against each other for one mod spot as it makes no sense!

so, you can vote for ioop or bobby. you can vote for pawnt as well, but since his campaign speach said 'don't vote for me, i am assuming the the gentile nature of our club will persuade folks not to vote for him.

i cast my vote for bobby (nothing personal ioop, i just want the original mods to stay mods for at least a week). at an indeterminate time in the future, one of the other mods will come up for election.

I thought we were starting from scratch again ?...no mods, just Jeff as founder and leaving all the mod places open for a vote.

Actually.. ignore that, scrolling back I see there was a closing date fixed..I had forgot that.

I cast...
my vote for IOP.
zorroloco

declared winner is....
hands him the envelope...

opens it....

pauses dramatically....

announces.... bobby!

before you wonder how this happened (there were only two publc votes, 1 for bobby and 1 for iop) i received one private ballot cast for bobby.

it seems like a bit of a stretch to call it a valid election, and i am willing to:

1) leave it as bobby the declared winner,
2) call for a revote,
3) call in the mexican election judicial court to straighten thing out.

let me know what y'all want me to do. i say let it stand. here is what i propose: lets say in 3 months, leo is up for election (dec 1), then jd (mar 1), then kem (june 1), then bobby again (sept 1)...that means 4 election/year for 4 mods and we always keep three to rollover. also means if someone wants in, but loses, they can try again in 3 months.

VOTING IRREGULARITIES
Bah, I demand a recount! My supporters will march on the streets of Minnesota and wherever KoP currently resides until I get the votes recounted the way I wanted. My guess its these faulty voting machines... the person who sent the private ballot to Jeff probably intended to cast their vote for me and Gameknot/Diebold ruined it. I believe I owe it not only to my countless supporters, but also to democracy itself to make sure that blood runs on the streets of gameknot until I get my way.

Anyways, I was probably going to end up voting for Bobby anyways. It was either between him or Pawntificator . And since the result is already done, I would like to go ahead and cast my belated vote for Pawntif . That'll be my last petty action that occured during this campaign.

My sole regret was that no one got (or brought up) the fact that I copied Dan Quayle's speech from the 1988 Vice Presidential debates. If anyone had quoted Bentsen and said "Jason, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Jason, you're no Jack Kennedy," I would've been very proud.

So in conclusion, recount, blood on the streets, yadda yadda, and congrats Bobbynox

My vote is for Pawntificator.
He has beaten me thoroughly, so thoroughly in fact, that I didn't immediately request a rematch. That's rough, and he did so with dignity and intellectualitude. Very impressive work pawn, you have my vote. Perhaps I'll grow a pair and request a rematch. I'm still sore after that last beating!

Woo hoo!!
Yes, I pretended not to want any votes. I feigned indifference, but deep down all I want to do is be a moderator. I would quit my job and school to sit in front of the comforting glow of my monitor day and night skimming the threads for any indication of any untoward circumstances requiring the intervention of your trustworthy and fair freedom fighters.

Thanks for the vote soulcrates!

Alas, reverse psychology doesn't work over the internet as well as it used to. People are too trusting nowadays.

Soulcrates, I have made my return to playing cc today, so bring that rematch anytime!

One last thing...being good at chess doesn't mean that someone is incredibly brilliant, humble and fair. That just happens to be the case in my instance, but I'm a fluke (the result of billions of years of random happenstance and mutation)
