Opera
Just like daddysgirl, I used to dislike Opera. I live in a small city which actually values and supports performing arts, so we have a year-round Opera company, Symphony, Ballet company and many theater groups. When my children were still fairly young their ballet teacher recommended they join the children's chorus of our opera company, and I am glad they did. They learned a lot, and were in many opera and light opera productions, which was great stage experience for them. After about 2 years the opera company was getting ready to produce a staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, something I had ALWAYS wanted to be a part of, so I joined the opera orchestra for that event, and stayed in the opera orchestra for the next 10 years. (due to health problems I have had to take a leave of absence for now.) My kids left the opera company a few years later to focus all of their time on ballet training with the ballet company, but I stayed on in the opera orchestra anyway. I am so glad I did, as I learned a great deal about this classical form that I used to intensely dislike.

I think what REALLY bugged me about opera is that from when I was a kid, growing up in San Francisco and getting to see a lot of symphony, opera, ballet and light opera, I noticed that the opera singers generally could NOT vibrato on pitch, and it was anyone's guess what note they were ACTUALLY singing. It drove me just nuts, and I hated to hear it. Now, most opera singers can not only sing well, but sing on pitch, so I have been able to enjoy it.
