Chess Tips
This is the beginning of some tips about chess. Some will be elementary to some of you. Some may be advanced enough for all us. Some may be so advanced, that I don't understand it.

Here is an easy one;

Always keep your eyes open for a queen (or other piece) protected by another piece. This is especially true when the square under attach is f2(white) or f7(black). On the board below, notice the black bishop on d4 waiting as a protection for queen on f2.

What is the best move?

It is black's move. What should he do? Are you sure?

Well, it looks like he should take the free look. That would certainly guarantee that he wouldn't lose. It would also guarantee that he wouldn't win since he would now be in stalemate. He only really has two options. He can move to h6 or f6. I would move to f6 since that would give the king more freedom. He loses nothing by this and since he has two passed pawns, he should still win as long as he can keep the white rook from devouring them.

Resign or not?

The above board show a good time for black to resign......IF the players are masters. (The game is Alekhine-Nimzovich, San Remo, 1930.) HOWEVER, at our playing level, resignation is premature. There is simply too much room for the opponent to make a mistake. At least I speak for myself! What do you say?

Resign or not?
Black pawn at b6 should be missing from the diagram,White Bishop should be at a4.White pawn should be at h4. h4 was the last move of the game,Nimzovich then resigned because he was in Zugzwang,after he runs out of pawn moves he will be forced to move a piece,White then plays b5 winning a piece and with a much better position espec'lally at this level THE GAME!

Resign or not?
Thanks, Cappa. The board shown is not the ending position of the game. It is actually the position after black's 26th move. I pulled the position from a book by Yasser Seirawan (Winning Chess Tactics). It was Seirawan's opinion that black should resign at this point.

Also, Seirawan may be correct for their level of play. However, at our level of play (at least I speak for myself), there is still a chance of winning the game

Interesting word -- Zugswang. I wonder how many club members know what it is.

Zugzwang.
For those who are not sure what Zugzwang means. It is German (for move compulsion.)A player is said to be in Zugzwang when any move he/she makes will result in the loss of a piece or otherwise seriously weaken his/her position.

Mate in 6
It is black's move. See if you can find the mate in 6 moves or less?
