![]() <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group1: This group is fully under way. All participants are swift ouof the blocks, with irishleprechaun marginally leading the field. So far, 3 games have been completed: sherbert dispatched the Dubliner in fine style on board #7965799 - it seems 16.Nd2 was his eventual undoing, and the man from New Hampshire, USA set the trap and swiftly squeezed the Irishman to resignation. He fared no better against acoukeys from Connecticut on board #7955744, losing a Bishop in the 13th move, and never truly recovering as the US contingent chalked up a second win out of two... irishleprechaun consolidated his two defeats by capitalizing on his early lead against Canadian richardfallows on board #7955324. Group 1 stands tied three-ways, with the leaders on 1 point apiece. <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group2: Is in the early stages. One player is yet to join the group, but the games are under way... <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group3: Has already claimed some scalps, with mayor from Germany leading the fray with two points out of two at the hands of corneliusblisand (board #7956092) from Denmark and salmon_slayer63 (board #7956749) from Oregon respectively. The latter two made a battle of the remaining point that has been awarded in Group3 with the Dane claiming the win to stand second in the group at this early stage with a very clever looking checkmate on board #7956750. <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group4: Like the second, this group remains in the early stages, and no points have been awarded yet. <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group5: The single point belongs to hjemcall from Belgium, gained against kudzu grom Georgie, USA. The Belgian comments "I was a bit lucky with that 'reckless' knight. It sort of triggered the attack which otherwise might have come much later or not at all.", referring no doubt to his Queenside Knight who crossed the board in awesome fashion, driving his opponent's Queen back, and ultimately gaining her capture giving way to a clinical checkmate in only 20 moves on board #7958557. <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group6: Is underway, with nothing to report as yet. <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group7: Also has claimed no scalps nor provided any forerunners yet. <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; Group8: Has but one result to report in a thrilling encounter between European coupigwe and The Aggrevator from New Zealand. A tightly fought duel ended up in a thourough wipeout of the New Zealander at the hands of 1650-rated coupigwe on board #7958990. This group is well under way, despite the absence of one player as yet. We expect to see a lot from the two aforementioned players after their epic battle! And so concludes this first update of the 2nd Fighting Warriors Mega-Tournament 2007-8. Should anyone wish to analyze or annotate any particular games, or make a full report of the tournament as it stands, please feel free to do so... Warm Regards, Oisin ps. ![]() Firstly, my apologies for sending this to the entire team, as it is a Mega Tournament issue. If you are not involved in the tournament, please ignore this message. However, if you signed up for the tournament this is a very important notice, specifically for those who have not yet joined their groups. Please check our club forum for your group placing. If you have not yet accepted your invitation to your group, please liaise with your group host to rectify this immediately. If you cannot yet join a mini-tournament, please at least make it a priority, as it is holding up games for fellow team members. Players who have not accepted their places in their groups by the 1st of October will forfeit their place in the tournament and will not be invited to join after that date, except in exceptional circumstances (please contact me if this may affect you). Further, if a group has completed all games with the exception of those games involving a player who has not joined the group, the player in question may forfeit his place in the tournament. This will be adhered to strictly. I'm sure all can appreciate the organisation that goes into an event like this, and hold-ups without good reason can not be accepted, as they affect all other participants. This also affects the closing 2006-7 tournament. Any games holding up a following round that have not yet begun may be affected with similar action. All the information is available in the club forum. I urge you to check there, as I will not be posting team messages involving the tournament. If you have not checked the club forum and taken action (or at least contacted me to discuss), it will be assumed this team event is not something you care about, and your position in the tournament may be affected. This, my friends, is a similar issue to the team spirit issue that our captain has been addressing recently. It is a team event, and ignoring it is in effect ignoring your teammates. It is an event that was designed with team networking in mind, increasing the number of games between teammates, with a competitive edge, providing opportunity to network within the team. I urge you to interact, and enjoy the tournament in the spirit intended in its organisation. The medals and status resulting from winning or placing in the tournament is an aside, however, it is a great way to recognise those who take part and show their chess talent to us all. Please use the forum pages to post messages involving the tournament. Share your experiences, comment on special games, even annotate games and post the link in the club forum. As I said, the primary goal of this tournament is to interact and enjoy a networking experience with your teammates. It is all about relationship-building, and should be an event that increases team spirit. In conclusion to this team posting, I am now accepting names for a backup waiting list, for those who still wish to take part in the tournament should places become available resulting from anything mentioned above. Best Regards, Oisin |

![]() In Group 1 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; we have 97% of the games completed. acoukeys has taken first place (10.5pts), and betterthanyou has taken 2nd (9pts, and one game still in progress), the two automatic qualification spots. irishleprechaun has 7.5 points in 3rd, a score that stands him well to qualify as one of the best scoring 3rd place finishers. Group 2 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; is 30% complete. There is a place still open on this group. If you aren't already taking part in the tournament, please let me know if you wish to take part. This group is still wide open as a result. Group 3 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; is halfway through. Mayor tops the group on 6 points, tied with corneliusblisand, however the latter has a game in hand. On the other hand, points are well spread in this group, and dropped points may prove crucial, especially with FWMT1 finalist andru2 remaining as yet unbeaten. Group 4 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; shows host and co-captain rowdyrooks leading the fray on maximum points of 5 out of 5 games completed. Mitchle and b123 are close behind, however with this group only 33% complete, anything could happen! Group 5 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; is almost halfway through, with hjemcall unbeaten with 7 points on top of the group, followed by kudzu on 4 points. Having dropped as many points as the former has gained however, kudzu may resign his second place to team captain achilles13 who has gained maximum points from 3 games completed. Group 6 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; has tightd33 in the only automatic qualifying position behind a former teammate. There is still a position open in this group also. Again, please apply to me if you are interested. Group 7 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; is the "group of death", with 5 players still in with a chance of qualification, though the group is at present topped by qistnix on maximum points from 7 games. Group 8 <gameknot.com" target="_blank">-> gameknot.com; is topped by our vicit on 8.5 points. Though the defending Champion has dropped his first points (2.5) in FWMT games, he remains in a strong qualifying position, and even should he drop more points will almost certainly qualify as a "best 3rd place", even in the unlikely event he misses out on automatic qualification. Ilpo holds 2nd place on 8 points. Well there is the update for now. Just a quick reminder that if you are not involved and would like to be, there are two positions open. Please ensure you have an immediate tournament place open and let me know you are interested. Also, please note there are 20 places up for grabs in the 2nd round. Any current team member finishing in a top-two position will automatically qualify, while the remaining places will go to the best 3rd place positions of team members. Former team members will not progress to the next round. Take care, Oisin |

![]() At the moment, we have our first Fighting Warriors Mega Tournament at the final hurdle (see club forum posting), we have a game of games developing against 3200 rated chess computer Rybka, we have Warriors sharing their stories, getting to know one another with some wonderful tales - not least the story of how this incredible team was founded by our team captain Achilles13 - giving insight and provoking new ideas, including speculation of a Team Convention some time in the future! Really, I think someone should write a Wikipedia page for Natalino Duarte (please tell me I didn't spell it wrong!), this amazing legend of a man who founded the greatest online chess team that ever was! But now to business... The Fighting Warriors Mega Tournament 2007-8 needs to be reported upon, and I've been told by a little bird that we have some qualifiers for the second round! Let me see... Oh, before I go any further, many of you may not have noticed the new mini-tournament feature: Hover your mouse over any of the games in progress in the group table and it will display the current board position. Quite cool! Group 1 <gameknot.com; has indeed completed. Acoukeys (Billy Budd from Connecticut USA) has taken top spot with 10.5 points and qualifies as top seed from the group. He shared the spoils in his games with Betterthanyou (Mustafa from Virginia USA), who dropped a point against IrishLeprechaun and finished on 10 points, ahead of the Dubliner (Liamo) on 7.5 points. Qualifiers from this group are therefore: Acoukeys Betterthanyou 3rd place (qualification pending): IrishLeprechaun 7.5pts We have a problem with group 2 <gameknot.com; my friends. Gibsonscot (Scott from Red Deer AB Canada) has just been sent an invitation to join this group. This is my error! Unfortunately, I missed that he'd already been added to a group, and is now in 2 groups. Oops. Apologies to anyone who wanted to fill that vacant spot. Unfortunately, once an invitation is accepted it cannot be overturned. I have discussed with Scott, and he has agreed that any points gained by him from this group will not count. Thus, his inclusion in this group will be treated in the same manner as positions ex-teammates have in the tournament. His position in Group 5 will stand as normal. Calojay (Jim from Sacramento Ca. USA) currently tops the group, followed closely by group host Vpartsch (Vincent Partsch from Sarasota Florida USA), on 5 and 4 points respectively. This group has a long way to go! Group 3 <gameknot.com; is tight, tight, tight! What makes it so is that though top two Mayor (Michael from Paderborn Germany) and Corneliusblisand (Jens from Copenhagen Denmark) look comfortable on 7 and 6 points respectively, they have both dropped points, while Andru2 (Andres from Bogota Colombia) has many games to make up for the single point he has dropped. Further, he has the experience of a silver medal in last year's Mega Tournament to call upon to see him through! All three should really qualify though, unless Searcoid (Oisin from Reading, UK (Irish!)) can win the rest of his games and make a claim for a second round spot. Wishful thinking! Group 4 <gameknot.com; is a complete and utter humdinger! The permutations are uncountable it seems... However, it is 40% complete, with Rowdyrooks (Harry from St. Johns Canada) tops the group quite comfortably on 6 points out of 6 games completed. Mitchle (Lloyd from Philadelphia PA USA) has dropped quite a few points on his way to second place in the group, with 4 points in the bag and 3 games left to finish. B123 (Bart from Leuven Belgium) has a big claim for an automatic qualifying spot though, currently on 3 points, but with 7 games yet to comlete, and 2nd place, Casual section, 16th GK tournament, May-2005 in his history books! E4addict also has something left to say about theis group perhaps, with 2 points gained and none dropped... Watch this space! With Chessfiend (Steven B. Mindell, East Hampden NY USA - 1pt), MysticKnight (Cliff from Michigan USA - 1pt) and Everlast75 (Toronto Ontario Canada - 0pts) bringing up the rear of the group, they are all within the distance however. Not many dropped points in this group. In fact, the best way to see how it is going here is using the aforementioned new feature of the group table. Hjemcall (Herman, Herk-de-Stad Flanders Belgium - 9pts) is going to cruise into the second round of this Tournament in group 5 <gameknot.com; He hasn't dropped a single point, to the chagrin of our illustrious Captain Achilles13 (Natalino, Lisbon Portugal and previously Canada and a proud Italian for those of you who weren't aware!), who takes up 2nd position with his only dropped point coming at the hands of the group leader. Kudzu (aka Bill Hardin, Newnan Georgia USA) has dropped a few points in 3rd place, and will do well to hold on to that position. As previously mentioned, Gibsonscot holds his place as normal in this group. Group 6 <gameknot.com; is an interesting one... Still with a pending invitation under investigation, a position in this group may open up pretty soon. With an ex-teammate topping the group, Tightd33 (Andrew Shores from Columbus GA USA) is in the only automatic qualification spot. It seems fairly wide open otherwise though. Capablanca7 (Peter Lamoreaux from Florida USA) and Desmondvan (Matt, a Canadian in Japan) are keeping close tabs on this qualifying spot! In group 7 <gameknot.com; we are just over two thirds done. Sonofander_pict (John Anderson from Recife Brazil - 7pts) is clinging onto his top spot for dear life, and can do nothing about Qistnix (Martin from Netherlands) who is level on points and with games in hand. Tjbuege (Tim from USA) and CraciunDaniel (Craciun Daniel from Constanta Romania), both on 5 points are threatening to crash the party! 2006-7 Champion Vicit (Bruno from Ottawa/Gatineau Canada) heads up group 8 <gameknot.com; though it's a lot less comfortable than he would like. He's dropped points against Ilpo (from Ulvila Finland), who has a game in hand and is only half a point behind. Both should qualify though, unless Cpresnoz (Curtis from Fayetteville, Arkansas USA) manages to steam up the table and rock the boat! And so concludes todays report. Best wishes, and keep fighting! Oisin |

![]() May I firstly apologize for having no update of late. It has been on my mind to update, but recent events have put it on the long finger. Now I am taking a few moments from work time to update on the state of play in our second Mega Tournament. Things are really moving along nicely. The group stage is almost finished, and we already have our first few qualifiers for the Second Round! Group 1 <gameknot.com; This group ended on the 11th October with 2 automatic qualifiers, and an Irishman hoping to make it through as a best-placed 3rd place finisher. Acoukeys and Betterthanyou finished on 10.5 and 10 points respectively, while Irishleprechaun finished on 7.5 points. Group 2 <gameknot.com; Calojay is guaranteed qualification, however with Vpartsch still playing a game, both could finish on 9 points. With equal head-to-head, a draw at random will decide who finishes top. Gibsonscot is not going to proceed from this group, so that leaves 3rd place wide open for any of the other contenders! Group 3 <gameknot.com; This one is again quite tight at the top. Corneliusblisand has one game remaining and stands on 8points on top of the group. Mayor stands on 7 points in 2nd place. Again, a random draw may decide who wins the group if both players finish on 8 points, since they are equal head-to-head. However, this could all turn head over heels if Andru2 wins his remaining games and finishes on 8.5 points! The runner-up from last year's tournament would much prefer this that hope that he qualifies in a best 3rd place, as that contest is extremely tight indeed! Surnight is the only player that can top the group, but is no longer with the team and thus cannot proceed to the next stage. Group 4 <gameknot.com; Here is a group that is as tight as Scrooge! E4addict has yet to drop a point, but is 2nd at the moment to Rowdyrooks by ˝ a point! They are on 6.5 and 6 points respectively. Mitchle and B123 are in 3rd and 4th place, with only a game in hand for the latter between them. Everlast75 is still in with a shout however – on 4 points with 5 games to finish – this group is wide, wide open! Group 5 <gameknot.com; This group plays host to one of the strongest players in the tournament if group ranking is to be counted. However this player, who has already shown his strength of analysis in the Team game vs Rybka <gameknot.com; ![]() Group 6 <gameknot.com; With the group leader no longer in the running (not a team member) this group becomes even more difficult, since there may be only one automatic qualifying spot. The two main contenders for this are Tightd33 and Capablanca7, on 7.5 and 6 points respectively. However, the latter has 2 games in hand... Group 7 <gameknot.com; The top two in this group are already decided. Top spot goes to Qistnix , another stalwart of the Rybka game. As with Hjemcall, Martin (from Netherlands with rating 2109 and 58% win ratio) can finish with a cleansweep. Craciundaniel takes 2nd with 9.5 points, and Tjbuege on 8 points and a game in hand is practically guaranteed to qualify as THE best 3rd place group finisher. Group 8 <gameknot.com; Group leader and current Champion Vicit tops this group, but may be dethroned should Cpresoz win his remaining games. However Ilpo would also do well to watch with interest, since should Theaggrevator take a point from Cpresoz, 1st and 2nd place may be filled by Vicit and Cpresoz, with Ilpo and Theaggrevator having to playoff for 3rd place! And so concludes the report for now. Watch this space! Oisin |

![]() I am aware that 3 of the 8 groups are now complete. Further, the remaining 5 groups are all but done also. I will try to get a report out this weekend. Unfortunately I'm very busy at work at the moment and generally too tired to write anything! =( Update coming soon, I promise! Also, last years winners are yet to receive their medals - I still have them sitting on my desk at home. I will try to action this this weekend also. Best, Oisin |

![]() This however is beside the point - my point - that I have not forgotten this tournament, and will step up the motivation to see it through to the finish! These eight groups have produced some fantastic games. Not only that, but they have also produced 16 Warriors, all of whom are capable of becoming this year's Champion. Vicit is amongst them, vying to defend his crown. Andru2 is also there, hoping to better his silver medal (which I assure you Andres is on the way!) of last year. Rowdyrooks will try not to be distracted by his heightened duties of Captain, with brave war-cries that he will achieve the great feat this year... However, to business. The rules stated that the top two from each group will qualify to the 2nd round, along with the four best-scoring 3rd place - making 20 players into 4 groups of 5. should 20 players not be made out of these, the next best-scoring 3rd place will be included and so ont through to the best-scoring 4th place etc. The only exclusions shall be that ex-teammates shall not progress to the next stage. Therefore, it is possible for only one warrior to progress from a group (see group 6! <gameknot.com; ) Group 1 <gameknot.com; 1st Acoukeys (Billy, Connecticut) 10.5pts 2nd Betterthanyou (Mustafa, Virginia) 10pts 3rd Irishleprechaun (Liamo, Ireland) 7.5pts Group 2 <gameknot.com; 1st Vpartsch (Vincent, Florida) 9pts 2nd, 3rd place not eligible. Group 3 <gameknot.com; 1st Corneliusblisand (Jens, Denmark) 8pts (1 game remaining) 2nd Mayor (Michael, Germany) 7.5pts 3rd Andru2 (Andres, Colombia) 7pts (1 game remaining) Group 4 <gameknot.com; 1st Rowdyrooks (Harry, Canada) 11pts 2nd E4addict () 10.5pts 3rd Mitchle (Lloyd, Pennsylvania) 6pts or B123 (Bart, Belgium) 6pts Group 5 <gameknot.com; 1st Hjemcall (Herman, Belgium) 12pts 2nd Gibsonscot (Scott, Canada) 8.5pts 3rd Achilles13 (Natalino, Canada) 6pts (tied with ex-teammate in 3rd) Group 6 <gameknot.com; No valid 1st or 2nd place 3rd Capablanca7 (Peter, Florida) 8pts Group 7 <gameknot.com; 1st Qistnix () 10.5pts 2nd Craciundaniel (Craciun, Romania) 9.5pts 3rd Tjbuege (Tim, USA) 9.5pts Group 8 <gameknot.com; 1st Cpresoz (Curtis, Arkansas) 9.5pts 2nd Vicit (Bruno, Canada) 8.5pts 3rd Ilpo (Ilpo, Finland) 8pts You will notice from above that there are 21 names. These are the players who will proceed, subject to verification, into the next round. Therefore, if all 21 confirm their wish to proceed by the deadline appointed, a playoff game will be effected to decide 3rd place in group four, and the remaining 20 Warriors will partake in the 2nd group stage. I request that all of the above named reply to me directly to confirm their inclusion in the next round before 5pm GMT on the 30th of April. Following this, names will be drawn into the four 2nd round groups. If necessary, Warriors who are not above named but who were next placed in terms of position and score in that order may be called upon to fill vacant spots. I look forward to the responses! Happy Independence Day! Oisin |
