The first results are in...!
It's been an eventful first week in the second round of the Fighting Warriors Mega-Tournament 2007-8.

The first to score a point is last year's finalist andru2, who in group 2A <gameknot.com; beat group host irishleprechaun on game with a neat checkmate following an intriguing game that began with something similar to Petrov's Defence. In an evenly-fought battle, black certainly made last year's experience count, closely pipping the Irishman to the post. No other results in yet from this group, though games are well underway, with only one invite still pending.

Group 2B <gameknot.com; is another group well underway. All players in this group have active games, but no results in yet. The same goes for group 2C <gameknot.com;. Group 2D <gameknot.com; is a little slower off the mark, but all seem to be well true to the task.

More will come as the results roll in!

More results...
As Portugal crash out to Germany in the European Championships, things have been moving on in the Fighting Warriors Mega-Tournament 2007-8.

Group2A <gameknot.com; has seen 3 further results, two of which were at Irishleprechaun's expense: game saw Colombian 2006-7 finalist Andru2 consolidate his lead at the top of the table, only to see the extra point canceled out by E4addict on id9745872. One must note that this guy has no fewer than 148 mini-tournament points - fewer than Irishleprechaun's 326, mind, but his record so far in this group is standing up to the test. The man from Connecticut, Acoukeys keeps tabs on the leaders with a win on game, also at the hands of the Irish tournament veteran. All to play for here so!

Group 2B <gameknot.com; sees the first big scalp on game, as Vicit crumbled to Rowdyrooks. This group is hotting up as all players are active in games.

Group 2C <gameknot.com; is also now in full flow, but no results have appeared yet.

Group 2D <gameknot.com; however, though it is still awaiting it's final contestant Corneliusblisand, has posted its first result as German Mayor took the Pennsylvania man Mitchle in an interesting and tightly fought 9739178, to take his position at the top of his group, while his fellow countrymen become the first to progress to the semi-finals in EURO2008.

Well that's it for now. Watch this space!

And even more results!
Well, it's been an eventful week! The tournament is shaping up nicely and we have more results in!

First of all, Group 2A gameknot.com is storming ahead in progress! With 3 more results this week, this group sees E4addict stake a claim for a place in the next round with a clean slate to date and 4 points on top of the table, following another win against second placed Andru2 on game, and two further against Acoukeys game and Irishleprechaun game. Betterthanyou has yet to finish a game however, so you better watch out!

Another result is in from group 2B gameknot.com. Last year's winner Vicit is in real trouble now, as Rowdyrooks blasted him to the bottom of the table on game. Needless to say, Harry tops this group with 2 points, but it's early days yet, and despite the two results, it's still anyone's group...

The first has been returned from group 2C gameknot.com as Craciundaniel toppled Ilpo game, to take a 1 point lead.

While group 2D gameknot.com still awaits it's final player Corneliusblisand (his final 1st round game can be followed on game and the completion of this will give him tournament room to join the group), another result has appeared on game as mitchle beat Vpartsch to take a provisional place on top of the table. Though he has completed more games than mayor - also on 1 point - the German is ahead on head-to-head.

Well, that's it for now. More news as more results appear. Please feel free to leave comments and/or discuss any of the individual games. To use links to players or games, see the codes on the bottom of this page, or to insert a diagram of a board, use the coding provided also. To obtain a FEN notation of a board as it appears to you, set it up in an "Analyse board" window, and click on "FEN" below the board to get the code to put between the quotation marks. It looks something like this: "6r1/p4r1k/7p/3R1p2/1P1Qpp2/4P3/6PP/2q2RK1 w - -" but you need to put the FEN coding shown below in front of it to activate the code.

Please don't emphasis on the fact that I'm getting badly crushed
The competition is mercyless, if I can get a few points out of this round I'll be happy...

Ok, so things are getting busy...
So, here we are, with the Second round in full flow! With 26 games done already in the second round, there's too many results to report on! Wow!

You know, it never ceases to amaze me how many games these tournaments produce. With 336 games in the first round alone, and 26 games of the second round done, that's 362 games completed. When done, this tournament will have produced no fewer than 427 games. So how does it stand so far?

Last year's winner Vicit had it spot on when he said the competition is merciless! In Group 2A <gameknot.com;, E4addict has provided a cleansweep so far, and is gunning for the semis. He has 3 games left to finish, and his top spot is secure if he wins just 1 of these. This is because of his head-to-head status against last year's runner-up Andru2. So it seems we are all but guaranteed two brand-new finalists this year.

Mind you, last year's champ Vicit is by no means out of the chase just yet. He may be the only one to lose points in Group 2B <gameknot.com;, but that also means that Rowdyrooks only tops the group by those two solitary points. Anything could still happen in this group as we await further results...

Group 2C <gameknot.com; has provided the first draw of the second round, with Craciundaniel topping the group on 3.5 points; that half-point was taken by Cpresoz, while Ilpo holds the only other point in the group. Still early days here, but the battle is on...

The tightest group is arguably Group 2D <gameknot.com;, where Corneliusblisand holds the edge by a mere point - though he has yet to concede a point, this being his advantage...

So this tells us just a little... The second round is well under way, and the competition is truly fierce!

And so it continues...
Apologies my friends for not updating this sooner. Things are getting back on track for me now, and I'm pleased to say this tournament is progressing very well! There are no fewer than 4 players confirmed to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament, however as only one group is complete, only 3 of these are confirmed in terms of placement.

Group 2A <gameknot.com; is the group that is complete. In a tightly-battled group, warrior E4addict clinched top spot, dropping only half a point to Acoukeys along the way... This puts him in a strong position, as he will play a second-placed warrior in the next round. Meanwhile, last year's runner-up Andru2 also advances, surely with a resolve to take the title this year...!

Last year's Champion Vicit has become the first casualty of the second round, crashing out of group 2B <gameknot.com; in dramatic style, without a single point, but with one game remaining to complete, to save his blushes... (Sorry Bruno, a reporter can never resist being harsh on those who have warranted great expectations! No offence intended, and no doubt you'll be back with a vengeance next year...). However, this group is far from over, with the other 4 contenders all in the running to blaze into the next round... Hjemcall and Rowdyrooks both lead the way with 4 points apiece as I write, however id-Capablanca7 and Tjbuege will not give up so easily. Vicit will still have a say here, as he attempts to save face and reduce Peter's chances... As it stands, this is the group to watch at the moment, no less given Bruno's earlier comment that "The competition is mercyless..."...

Craciundaniel will progress in first place from group 2C <gameknot.com;, no matter what happens in any other game in the group. However, the second place is being tightly-fought by the rest of the field. The only one at a disadvantage here is Gibsonscot, who has yet to secure a point, but he is not out of the running just yet...

Group 2D <gameknot.com; is very interesting, with many permutations... Corneliusblisand SHOULD qualify for the next round. Mind you, he still faces the challenge of id-Mayor and Achilles13, and at worst for him, a playoff will be required to decide which of himself and another will progress. All he needs, mind you, is half a point to secure his future in the tournament, but with Fighting Warriors Team Captain his opponent in the games where he needs this score from, expect no quarter (or half - pun intended!) given here!

There shall I leave it for now. Congratulations to those who have already progressed to the next stage. Commiserations to those who will need to try again next year, and good luck to those who are vying to make their name honoured as the Fighting Warrior Champion of 2008!

Final Round!
Hi Folks,

We are NEARLY there!
Just to give you all an insight into how things are shaping up...

Group 2A <gameknot.com; has clear results, and 2 players will progress to the final. Congratulations to E4addict (7.5 points) and last year's finalist Andru2 (5 points). Since the other runners are below the highest scoring third place finishers in other groups, these will be the only two finalists from this group.

Group 2B <gameknot.com; probably has the most interesting set of permutations, and there are some important deciding games going on to complete the group!
Rowdyrooks (6 points, max possible = 7) will qualify for the final, but is not guaranteed top spot in the group. Hjemcall (4.5 points, max 7.5) could take the top spot and if he does so these will be the two finalists from group 2B. However, Herman still has a huge chance of becoming the best scoring 3rd place finisher even if things go right for Capablanca7 (3pts, max 5) or Tjbuege (2.5pts, max 5). Watch this space!

Group 2C <gameknot.com; is not yet complete, but the finalists are clear. The final game being completed will have no bearing on the standings, except that B132 (4pts) and Ilpo (3pts, max 4) may have to battle out a tie-breaker if they end up being the highest scoring 3rd place finishers: B123 would win this, given his head to head against Craciundaniel. The two confirmed finalists from this group will be Craciundaniel (6.5pts) and Cpresoz (4.5pts, max 5.5).

Group 4 <gameknot.com; is another interesting one, especially if team Captain Achilles13 (1.5pts, max 5.5) succeeds in coming from behind to pip Mayor (4pts, max 5) to the 2nd available slot. The confirmed finalist from this group is Corneliusblisand (6pts, max 7).

So, to summarize, here is the list of finalists and possible finalists:
1. E4addict - CONFIRMED
2. Andru2 - CONFIRMED
3. Rowdyrooks - CONFIRMED
4. Hjemcall (4.5/7.5) or Capablanca7 (3/5) or Tjbuege (2.5/5)
5. Craciundaniel - CONFIRMED
6. Cpresoz - CONFIRMED
7. Corneliusblisand - CONFIRMED
8. Mayor (4/5) or Achilles13 (1.5/5.5)
9. Capablanca7 (3/5) or Hjemcall (4.5/7.5) or Tjbuege (2.5/4.5) or B123 (3/4) or Ilpo (4) or Mayor (4/5) or Achilles13 (1.5/5.5)

Given all this, it seems the cut-off point will probably be 4.5 points to get that much-coveted place in the final, though it is possible that tie-breakers may decide the final player...
1st tie-breaker: Head-to-head within group.
2nd tie-breaker: Head-to-head vs top spot in group
3rd tie-breaker: Head-to-head vs 2nd spot in group
4th tie-breaker: 2-game playoff
5th tie-breaker: Team points accumulated at time of invitation to Final, being 2 days after the final playoff game finishes.

I'll need one of the confirmed finalists to come forward to host the Final please, according to instructions.

Thanks,
Oisin

From Group 2A: e4addit andru2
From Group 2B: rowdyrooks hjemcall
From Group 2C: craciundaniel cpresoz
From Group 2D: corneliusblisand mayor

One remaining position will be filled by one of the following: ilpo tjbuege. Though capablanca7 can equal ilpo's 4 group points however, he cannot qualify, as his head-head vs the top 2 in his group is 0/4 against ilpos's 1/4.

Currently, Ilpo stands to qualify, but Tjbuege can take this provided:
A. He wins his remaining games and finishes on 4.5 group points.
B. He finishes on 4 group points but wins vs hjemcall, giving head-to-head of 1.5/4 vs top two against Ilpo's 1/4.
Scenario C: Tjbuege draws vs hjemcall and finishes on 4 group points: Ilpo and Tjbuege will play-off head-to-head for the place, 1 game each as white. A third game will be played in the event of a tie, with white being determined independently by the toss of a coin.

TFWMT 2007-08 Final
One small report about the TFWMT 2007-08 Final that finally started, a week or two ago. Today, teammate craciundaniel has entered the tournament, and there's just one more slot to be filled, either by ilpo or tjbuege, depending on the latter's final results against capablanca and/or myself in group 2B. Well, tension 's high and competition 's tough, not only (and still) in the second round of this tournament but, meanwhile, also in the final, where first blood has been spilt, with Harry (rowdyrooks) being the victorious hero to spill it. All this just days before our next great tournament will start, the TFWMT 2009! Frankly, I just can't wait!

Kind regards to all
